Best of current series…..BUT
First let me say after years of using Garmin Equipment both on land and sea, I would not even look at another brand. I purchased this new unit to replace my aging Street Pilot 2720. The 2720 was the best investment I ever made. However it needed a new power cord and updated mapping. Add to this my desire for a larger screen. After much research the 1350T fit my need. I was not interested in Bluetooth since my care already had it.
PROS: Not as bulky and much lighter. (Hope it last as the 2720 was built like a tank). Great display that is much easier to read in bright sunlight. Faster lock on sats and like the battery option although I use the plug in most of the time. Accuracy in finding location has been good, however the 2720 was better.
CONS: Even the 2011 maps are out of date. Do not rely on the Speed Limit Feature. It is inaccurate most of the time. In our area it list a major road as being posted at 65 when in fact a mjor part of it is 50. The 1350 has eliminated the option of mapping a route for shorter distance as opposed to faster time. Also eliminated some of the GPS tolls which were nice.
BOTTOM LINE: Good but not great. Can’t comment on the traffic feature as I have yet to get a warning of any kind to detour.
Buy this GPS!
I really like this GPS. I have had this for around 1 month now and it’s saved me many a wrong turn and delay due to traffic. I used it 99% of the time I am in the car, if nothing else to help with travel time and speed
My favourite features:
1) Lane Assist. I love it. Quite often before this I had no idea which lane to be in or not to be in and I would get caught out and miss an exit, or exit when I wasn’t supposed to.
2) Traffic – will redirect you if traffic is severly heavy and also shows your traffic in route (see con also)
3) Speed Limit – shows the posted limit and your current speed (in red if you are going too fast)
A few cons (hence the 4 stars)
1) Traffic on route not always accurate
2) May lose power and not restart for some time as others have commented on. If you’re patient, just wait and hope it doesn’t happen too often! It did happen to me though in route which wasn’t appreciated.
3) Sometimes the routes don’t seem accurate (this may be common for all GPS).
So 3 cons, 3 pros, but the pros are big pros for my personally and I haven’t listed everything, just my favourites and I do love this GPS and would buy it again in a heartbeat.
I wish I could have given this unit 5 stars!
I upgraded from an aging but still perfectly working Street Pilot C330 to this Nuvi 1350T. Everything is better on this unit except for a couple things:
1. Audio quality: horrible. My good old C330 has dual speakers, which gives much much better sound quality. The 1350T seems to have a tiny speaker that distorts horribly when over 80%. It looks like style comes with disadvantages, although my cell phone speaker is also small and sounds better.
2. Battery life rated at 4 hours. The C330 was rated for 8 hours. It’s not like I didn’t know this from before (I did my research), I just want to complain to Garmin that they made a more mobile unit (having pedestrian mode) but with worse battery life. (btw, dimming the brightness to save battery is not applicable when you’re walking in the daylight, so you’d have to keep it on 100% brightness to be able see something, which decreases battery life dramatically).
In addition to these two complains, on the first trip, I experienced a sudden restart as described in other posts. All software updates and map updates were done immediately after receiving it, so it looks like they haven’t fixed this yet. It might not even be fixable by software update.
All in all, I am happy with this GPS unit. The price was right also (half of what I paid for the C330, 3 years ago).
Oh, and I also miss the glossy display on my C330 (much more fingerprint resistant, almost like iphone). The 1350T has a matte display, not such a good idea for a touchscreen, it’s brighter though.
Garmin 1350
Very nice product. Tried it locally and it does not pick most efficient route, but it gets you there. The recalculate feature works beautifully.
Not for NYC
I don’t know how this product works outside of NYC but so far this GPS uses a LOT of local roads. For example, we were going to the mall in two separate cars, the other car had a TomTom and we had the Garmin. The others got to the mall 45 minutes before us because the TomTom used the BQE while the Garmin crisscrossed us through a variety of local roads. We ended up getting stuck in a traffic jam on Flatbush Ave. so it’s not like we didn’t take the highway to avoid traffic. Other than actually getting to your destination the Garmin is easy to use and easy to set up. However, if you live in the city/Brookyln/Queens and mainly travel within the boroughs I do not recommend this GPS.
Great product for the price.
We used it in philadelphia on a recent trip and it mostly worked great. They only reason i didnt give it a full 5 stars was that there were a couple of spots where the satellite signal was very poor and it kept recalculating and was driving us crazy b/c it kept taking us in the wrong direction. ALSO, the lower right hand of the screen was not responding to touch. After calibrating the unit, it worked perfectly.
We had no problems after that. This GPS unit works great, and i think its a great price and i am very happy with it.
Great customer service, bad product.
**I purchased this Garmin Nuvi 1350 through Amazon.com**
I have used many car GPS units in rental cars, but this is my first time purchasing one. I conducted a lot of research and decided that this Nuvi 1350 best fit my needs and price range. Consumer Reports gave it good marks as did many on Amazon reviews.
I consider myself pretty tech savvy. More so than most. I received the product on a Wednesday and I was leaving for vacation on Friday. I wanted to be sure all of the software was up to date as well as the maps. I followed all of the steps given by the Garmin web site. Tried to update maps once, fail. Twice….fail. I thought I was doing something wrong. I didn’t have time to mess around, so I called Garmin customer service. The associate was very friendly and double-checked everything I had done. After about 20 minutes, the tech determined my unit was defective and was unable to write to it’s own memory. GREAT!!!
Well, I won’t be able to return the unit until I get back from vacation, so I decided to give a shot out of the box. Not bad, even in the mountains. The voice was pretty annoying and the pronunciation of names of roads was pretty amusing. Not bad for the price, but failing to update out of the box is extremely disappointing.
Overall, GREAT customer service, but I CAN NOT accept the failure. If I fork out this much money for a gizmo, it had better work. I will return this product to Amazon.com and likely go with another brand. Good luck.
Broke on second day of use
Very disappointed as my unit broke after only two days. I installed all the latest software and latest maps – an easy enough process on my mac but today on its maiden voyage home the unit won’t turn on properly. Just kept resetting displaying the logo for a brief second or two and then resets again.
Replacement NUVI
I replaced a NUVI 750 with the 1350T. The touch screen failed on the 750 after 3 years and repare cost would have been $100. It cost me an additional $50 to get a new 1350T. It’s faster on start-up, gets traffic updates, has thinner profile and better windshield mount. It was worth the extra $50.
Kiddie Maps
Recently purchased the 1350t after owning two other Garmins’ through the years (550C and a 2650 Street Pilot). Device works as advertised with good directions etc. However, I am amazed at how the map shows so little detail. My original Streetpilot showed city names, geographic features, almost all street names and the like. The 1350t fails to name most streets (On the map) almost all cities and zero geographic features. If your goal is to goal is to go from point A to B, the 1350t works well. If you want to know anything about your surroundings – via the map – buy an atlas.
Good GPS
Everything works as advertised, however the ads on the traffic reports get a little irritating at times.
Garmin 1350T
I purchased two of these Garmin units, one for myself because I wanted to upgrade the one I had and the other for my daughter who has graduated from college. We have both used our units and they are functioning well. When the units arrived, I went onto Garmin’s web site to download the free updated map. The only “problem” i had there was the length of time it took to download. It seemed like it took a couple of hours……The GPS has lane assist which I thought the GPS would announce which lane I would need to be in for my exit, but it only shows an indicator icon in the upper left hand corner. So unless you look at the GPS, you don’t know for sure.
So far we are happy with the purchase. I would recommend.
FANTASTIC TOOL!
As an owner of a service company, we have to venture into areas that are unfamiliar. Laptops are cunbersome to operate in the car and that is far more than what we need and mapbooks are outdated before the ink drys. The Nuvi was purchased in April 2010 and has proven itself to be a perfect choice and fit for our needs. The setup was completed and good to go in 10 minutes. Every feature so far has proven itself just as advertised. It has been used, without error, thruout the California Central Valley towns and extensively in the So. Cal beachfront areas of L.A./Orange and San Diego Counties. I would recommend this tool and would certainly by one again. The one minor issue is that the Nuvi will not charge if left in the direct sunlight (such as a dashboard or windshield) and plugged into the power port of the vehicle. A safety feature prevents charging so that it does not overheat. We learned to work with this quickly and do not have any other issues with it.
Best Navigation system ever.
After reserching numerous GPS’S for my Lincoln Navigator, I chose this one because of the features and portabiilty. I don’t even use the standard charging unit, I plug it into my laptop by day so its ready at a moments notice. As a real estate broker, this has saved me ALOT of time leading to more appointments and more commissions.
Works Well
I’ve been having a problem that sometimes I have to press the “done” button a few times before it reads it and moves on. The traffic feature is nice. My wife’s built in GPS give a choice of routes, sometimes that’s useful, this GPS does not have that feature. Overall works well and is easy to use.
Useful electronic device
This is my first GPS and I am very happy with it. However, I have found some locations that are not up to date even though I downloaded available updates when I received the unit.
Garmin 1350T is a Keeper
I like this Garmin 1350T unit and its ease of use. I have a 3 year old Tom Tom 910 for comparison and actually rode them side by side for comparison. The TT 910 due to wear and tear is shutting down and turning on ramdomly. This only happened after 2 years of use so do not take it as a negative for Tom Tom.
I purchased the Garmin for the free traffic info and it does pick up on incidences and once I detoured, very easy to do with two touches of the screen. Its display is much clearer and brighter than the Tom Toms ever was- I don’t know, but maybe the newer TTs are better. I find this Garmins response time and directions comparable to the Tom Toms. It is better in that it tells you which side of the road the destination is located, left or right which is a big help when you are away from home base.
Maybe I am missing something but the Tom Toms lane guidance is superior to the Garmins which I haven’t even managed to observe or figure out (certainly no audio warning). That is its only negative feature that is important to me and I miss it north of Boston on Rt 95/128, where you have to get left or exit by mistake. So I know when I go to Florida it will not be helpful around some of the unknown city highways.
It does have an easy to access, 1 touch of screen next turn view which is nice, still I miss the lane guidance.
The Garmin has some wacky POIs- like the McDonalds in the residential area that doesn’t exist- you can wipe them out. Being a gadget guy I like the speed limit and red warning speed numbers- works accurately in most instances. I also like the altitude read out. I like the traffic warning display which switches from green to grey to orange to red as it picks up a problem-nifty.
This unit is not Blue Tooth configured- I didn’t want it so that is why I got the 1350T.
Again very easy to use, responsive, and yes I would buy another Garmin product.
WK
Great price for all the features
Nice GPS with free lifetime traffic to boot. Doesn’t come with an in depth operational manual, but you can download one from Garmin’s website. Lane assist is a nice feature, but don’t take the instructions as gospel. On at least 2 instances, it has told me to be in the incorrect lane for an exit, mainly because I was taking the truck lanes on the NJTP and not the car lanes. Other than that, it is a great product loaded with features. I got the one without bluetooth, however, because I hadn’t heard good reviews about it (sound quality on both ends were reviewed poorly) so I went with a model that didn’t have it because I didn’t want to pay for a feature I wasn’t going to use.
Best Purchase I have made in a long time!
I LOVE this GPS. I drive 35 miles one way to work each day in heavy traffic. This GPS has turned into a life saver for me. It took me a while to “trust it” when it routes me a different way home but now I just do “as I’m told” and I save considerable time and stress. Have GPS – go anyware! I’ll never be without one.
BTW – my daugher calls me a “technical wannabe” who is helpless without her but I had this GPS figured out in no time. It’s that easy.
Great product.
This has everything you can ask for in a GPS system. Bright view, widescreen display. It’s very thin and light. Has a small but sturdy mount that fits nicely in all cars I tried it in. Has free FM traffic for life, via Navteq, which seems to update frequently and has good coverage. I compared this directly against a TomTom Go 740 LIVE on 2 different occasions with a friend on business trips to DC from central VA. Both performed equally well, and while the TomTom gets traffic information a little sooner because of the internet connectivity, the Garmin traffic updated quickly enough to allow for rerouting when possible. The graphics and display are nicer than TomTom, in my opinion. The voice is clear, the unit is loud enough and the settings are quite easy to change. I highly recommend this GPS.
