Garmin is a good unit but concerns about term “Factory Refurbishment”
What does “Factory Refurbishment” mean? Well in the case of the two Garmin GPS units that I bought it means this:
1) I was only able to register at Garmin one of the units so that I could get S/W updates. Garmin tells me that one of the units is already registered and I need to provide proof of purchase to be able to register and get updates. Not blaming Garmin – but if this is a true “factory” refurbishment then why can’t I register it. Sounds like someone didn’t complete the process. Complained to Amazon and they have not responded yet except to say I can return the unit for a refund. Needed them immediately for trips so guess that is not possible.
2) Both units did not come with updated maps. I think I could have bought a new unit with the latest maps for the price of this “factory refurbished” unit plus the cost of a Garmin map upgrade that is needed. Live in DFW area with lots of road changes.
Like I said before – happy with Garmin GPS but somewhat “warry” in the future about terms like “factory refurbished”! First bad experience from Amazon and their affiliates – hope it doesn’t happen again.
Bills thoughts
Product works great. Small size is easy to place on windshield and is easy to store in glove compartment.
Garmin GPS
This is my second Garmin, only because I gave the first one to my daughter. What a wonderful time saving gadget.
Best Bang for your buck handsdown!
It is very diffucult to find a better value for a GPS. This little workhorse does everything all the more expensive ones do without some bells and whistles. I can tell you from experience that bluetooth phone capabilities are a waste of money as well as traffic which is often innacurate. The 255 is the best bang for the buck available of any GPS manufacturer. I paid $70 for a refurbished unit which has been flawless! The lifetime map updates are under $90 at the garmin website. for $150 I have the only GPS I will ever need. I previously owned a Garmin 200 which was stolen out of my truck, which was a good little GPS as well. I have used Tom Tom and Magellan which I found to be much more difficult to use and get signals. My Garmin locks on to satellites immediatly, and automatically re-routes immediatly when you get off course. You can’t lose with the Garmin! There are no negitives in this unit! For under $100 there is no comparison on the market today! You will not be dissapointed. They should really give a Guarantee! because these units are as good as it gets, hands down. You could spend 4 times as much on another brand and it wouldn’t compare to this accurate reliable unit. I have yet to be dissapointed with any aspect of the unit. You can even use google maps with The Garmin Map program and make and download any route you wish with added waypoints etc.and save and load them with an SD card. I can see where this could be usefull for delivery drivers etc., but I have yet to use the program. It is easier for me to just map out a route and then program in each stop as a favorite and then just punch in wherever I need to go! Garmin is so intuitive you really don’t need to do anything but punch Go! and you are there! For the average Driver other than (A delivery Driver or a Trucker) this is the only way to go. You will not be dissapointed.
just like new
Item is just like new, i don’t know what could be different, besides the price. Takes a long time (multiple nights) to get the whole map update, but worked out fine, just had to use it a day, then hook it up to the computer until it lost battery power then do it again the next night and so on, i think it took 3 nights all together, but it works like a charm in the car.
Great GPS for the right price
This is a great deal and getting better. It has everything you need and the price is fantastic.
When you think of how much a map update is, you’re getting the gps for about $25. Easy to use. Intuitive. I’ve heard some complaints about the voice. I have no problems understanding it.
It will occasionally struggle in a neighborhood that is a maze of streets, but recalculates very quickly and will get you back on course.
Tremendous Value
I am very happy with this factory refurbished nuvi 255. I got it for a great price. The unit looks brand new. The nuvi is very easy to use- works right out of the box with out even consulting the manual. Using it is very intuitive.
You do need to obtain a proper USB cable to update the unit with your computer. It is an easily obtained USB- miniUSB cable that is commonly used for cameras, etc. The first map update is free. Updating the map from start to finish did take a little less than 3 hours for me.
Nuvi good, Garmin Suport needs improvement
I ordered this from Amazon.com and got it as promissed. It was a refurbished unit that looked like new. I went to update the maps on the unit and the Garmin website said the unit was registered 5 months ago. I emailed and explained I purchased a refurbished unit from Amazon and it was eligible for a map update. It took a number of emails to finally authorize this free update. Beware if you purchase a refrubished unit as you will likely go through this same hassle.
The unit itself worked as advertised and the map update took about 90 minutes, not hours as other have reported (unless you include the hassle with Garmin trying to get the update). I purchased an extended warranty as newer electronics don’t seem to be as robust as the older stuff.
So far, so good.
Value for money
This is my first GPS device. Got it at a very reasonable price (it was a refurbished item). Got one in a very good condition and it works perfect. This device speaks street names but doesn’t have other advanced features like Bluetooth support etc, but I didn’t need them. I would like to go for a wide screen one like 255W next time due to its wide viewing area and ease of use. In nutshell, I am satisfied with this purchase.
