Garmin nüvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic

Overall rating:

Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portableGPS navigators with its nüvi 755T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio–including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks–from the device to your car radio.New to the nüvi 7×5 lineup is Garmin’s HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 755T includes free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver. The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

I can’t recommend this product. I am on my 2nd and last 755T. The 1st one had many problems. I drive a delivery truck. It would quit 2-3 times a day. The 755 seems to be very sensitive to heat. Touch screen was un-reliable, you never knew what letter would come up. If you pushed “A”, “M” might appear. Poor directions, often leading me around the block, past my destination. It might be 500 yards off. All of these problems would show up 2-3 times a day. I had to re-calibrate the touch screen every day, and it still malfunctioned. It also has destination routing that would take me 10 miles past where I want to go, then send me back 2 miles from where I was..

I contacted Garmin, and they were VERY supportive. After many e-mails about the problem’s I sent the unit back for repairs. I received another 755T a few weeks later – a refurbished one. This one has the same problems, only 2-3 time a week, not daily. Garmin offered to replace this unit, but I don’t want another refurbished 755T. I WILL buy another Garmin, but not a 750 Series. I have a 205W that is a jewel. We have 4 other 205W’s at work that perform flawlessly.

The 755 has a rubberized coating on the case, and this might be a reason for the heat problem. The 205 sitting next to the 755 in the same location, seems to be cooler — no coating.

All in all, Garmin is a terrific GPS — but the 755 seem to have problems.

It’s great, but it did take us to a location for gas in Honolulu, Hawaii that was in fact an office building. Also, in heavy traffic you need to remember review the next street directions as turns were very quick. And to be fair, Honolulu is the 10th largest in the U.S. and very congested.

You do get one free map upgrade which took me about 45 minutes from start to finish.

All in all, it did a great job in keeping my marriage in harmony. Normally my wife is the navigator and I could possibly see there being a heated exchange.

The reason I bought this product was for it’s traffic capability and to be fair it actually does pick up flow and incidents as well as I hoped it would but it’s how it calculates the route that really kills me. When it reroutes the route, it seems to pick the only slowest possible option. For example if the route takes 10 minutes without traffic and there is an additional 10 minute delay it looks for an alternate route that has no traffic but it doesn’t seem to take how long the new route will take into account. So in the end I drive 30 minutes in no traffic which makes it a little pointless. I would like to see the product take the type of road into acoount (for example many traffic lights) when calculating alternatives.

Please do not buy mad maps. They are a complete waste of money! They do show you the scenic routes but it doesn’t tell you how to get there from where you are!

    System freezes occasionally.

It is effective as a regular GPS but I would buy the cheaper versions which does the same thing.

Amazon purchase and shipping was great as usual.

I’ve owned a Garmin 660 for 3 years now, and it recently broke due to my failed attempt at replacing the battery. Having used a Nuvi before, I know what features I’m looking for. This review mainly compares the 755t with the 660. I did update the firmware – that was one of the first things I did after the battery was fully charged.

In the 3 years I’ve owned the 660, I’ve used Bluetooth once, and that was to make a test call. So I decided to save some money and get this over the 765. If Bluetooth is important to you, get the 765 – that appears to be the only difference.

Why the 755 over the other models? There are a few features about this that I like over the newer 1xxx models, and the lower end 2xx models. I like the powered post – I do not need to remove the USB cable from the GPSr when removing it from the car. And I like the MP3 player, despite it being not very full featured. Accepting full size SD cards instead of Micro SD is nice, since I have a few spare SD cards. Headphone jacks (for connecting to car audio system, or headphones) is also important to me.

The FM transmitter remains weak and practically useless.

    Improvements over the 660:

Faster processor (screen refreshes faster), lane advisory, free lifetime traffic, internal antenna less prone to damage, looks nicer. Supports Asian fonts (in my case, used only for some of my MP3 files). USB transfer (for custom POI) appears to be faster.

A step back from the 660:

Screen occasionally freezes, touchscreen seems less precise, not able to point on 2D map to navigate to location when custom POI is set to “Prompt”, no easy access to audio (on 660 you get audio screen when pressing power button for a short duration), no easy access to MP3 player from 3D map view unless MP3 is currently playing. Screen is not as visible on sunny days (used in the car). Smaller fonts used on parts of screen (such as MP3 playback).

The ad is a non-issue. They’re small enough and not distracting. On the other hand, the traffic is only accurate about 1/2 the time.

My biggest gripe about it is the touchscreen, visibility, and the fact that I cannot point to a location on the map without it snapping to a custom POI, when custom POI is set to “prompt”.

Comparing what I gained and lost, I think I’d rather have the 660.

I am very happy with my new Garmin Nuvi 755T GPS unit. It is much improved over my older Nuvi 750. We used it on a recent short trip and it performed as expected. We did not yet engage the traffic function, since we were traveling in the mountains of western North Carolina. Doing business with Amazon was flawless as usual. I do reccommend the Nuvi 755T and purchasing it from Amazon.

This product exceeds my expectations. The speed of recalculations over my old GPS is phenomenal, and the text-to-speech is terrific. I also appreciate the fact that it has Traffic and Lane information. Garmin allowed me to download an updated map free-of-charge; so I have no fear of driving with an outdated map. I had a question, and was contacted quickly with a response from Garmin. The features are easy to use. Although it came with the window/dashboard mount, I chose to purchase a friction mount for ease-of-use; and a case for carrying it. I highly recommend this product.

I bought 755T with great anticipation after my 255 died. Yes, 755T is a nice GPS having many powerful features.

    What is great:

    Traffic alerts in cities

    Custom POI support

    MP3 player

    FM transmission

    Quick GPS signal

Features that work but not useful:

    3D lane assistance

3D building view in metro cities

So, what is not good? The core functionality of navigation is pathetic. I have used this GPS many times on long drives. And every time, I am disappointed. It gets certainly confused when there are flyovers/bridges. If you are passing under or over a street, it starts recalculating, which will of course take some time, and after you pass the under/over bridge, it recalculates again. In the mean time, you as a driver will be totally confused in the middle of traffic. This has happened even in on simple highway ramps. As soon as you take an exit, it thinks you are still on the highway and missed the exit and starts recalculating. Totally frustrating! Many times, on a clear highway, for no reason, it started recalculating. On few occasions, while traveling, I have noticed its map showing a non-existing road through a wide open plain. I have also tried it in the pedestrian mode. It was an absolute mess. After misguided for 20 minutes, I had to take a cab to a place which was only 1 minute away. 255 did not have any of these problems.

Bottom line: All the fancy features work great, but not the GPS feature :(

    I gave 4 stars.

When you ever have to type in the address, it’s really a hassle. The keyboard sensor isn’t accurate at all.

And when it give you a direction to turn, you only have couple seconds to make a decision. I hope it gives the notification little bit earlier.

And the junction view is not that useful. Can’t tell the difference.

    wishful thoughts

    1. I hope there’s an option or a button to find the closest freeway around the Area.

    2. Single button to go back to the map at once.

    3. More accurate traffic info

    conclusion

It has all the features that I asked for, but it never met my expectations. It still comes in handy whenever I have a business trip to unfamiliar area, but I’m not 100% satisfied with the abilities of the product.

    Thanks

The only two major downsides to this Garmin that I have noticed so far is that the touch screen isn’t always accurate when inputting cities and spelling out names of places. That can get frustrating pretty fast. The only other major downside is that the traffic function doesn’t always work right away. I’m currently residing in the Chicago suburbs, and have run into several traffic jams, of which only one the Garmin noticed and took me out of.

I bought this to use with my car and motorcycle. It does everything I wanted it to do. You can download routes into it and then follow the route rather than let it take you where it wants to go. Great unit for the price.

easy to use, need to really get on highway to see if lane function is what it is suppose to be. So far it is looking like it stands by its claims.

I’ll be honest…..I researched GPS devices for over six weeks before deciding to purchase this Garmin model (nuvi 755). I honestly believe my research paid off, and after a month of use, including a cross-country trip, the device has performed beyond my expectations.

There are already plenty of reviews espousing the performance highlights of the nuvi 755, so I will not waste your time by repeating those. With the caveat that I’m extremely pleased with the device and purchase, please allow me to discuss a couple of the ‘not so good’ aspects of the device. To reiterate, none of these minor problems are show-stoppers.

MINOR PROBLEM #1: When the device arrived, and I read the instructions, I learned I was authorized ‘one’ map update. I immediately proceeded to the Garmin website to take advantage of this free service. There were two options for obtaining the update: 1. You could download an extremely large file from Garmin (taking hours to download), or, 2. You could request a CD (or other media) and have the map update mailed to you. I chose the CD option. Unfortunately, the CD option costs $10, and after the charge showed up as ‘pending’ on my credit card, the charge never went through, there was no explanation from Garmin for the transaction never going through, and I’m still waiting for the map update. I can only speculate on the reasons for the delay. I have not tried to resolve the matter because I have completed my initial extensive use of the device (a cross-country trip), and it’s not urgent.

MINOR PROBLEM #2: While researching the various Garmin products, it was difficult to determine which accessories were included in the purchase, and which non-inclusive accessories perhaps ’should’ be purchased for immediate use. For example, I did not know the device’s internal battery could be recharged by attaching it to your desktop computer. Hence, I purchased a separate AC charging device (total cost of less than $10). I later found out it was not necessary for me to purchase the charging device, although in retrospect, I’m glad I did, since another vendor was selling the AC charging device for less than half the cost that Amazon was offering!

MINOR PROBLEM #3: The device is easy to handle, but due to its size and fragile internal electronic components, it is also EASY to accidentally drop it on a hard surface, and inadvertently destroy your investment. I believe Garmin needs to offer a low-cost cover that will allow customers to handle/use the device, while providing some protection from accidentally dropping it on the ground. A competing vendor has an after-market product that seems to perform this protection function. Unfortunately, it sells for $20 (which is more than 11% of the total cost of the nuvi), but is possibly well-worth the additional charge.

In conclusion, this is an excellent product, and I believe it’s an excellent value. I encourage commentary on the minor problems I have discussed.

This is my second Garmin and I have to say I love this GPS. Garmin uses the same format as the first unit, but with many more features. I know this is a small issue, but I also have a Tom Tom 730. When you reach your location with the Garmin 755t tells you which side of the street your looking for. This is not the case with the Tom Tom. Along with this the 730 seem to be more accurate in being right on when an address is given.

Works great. Map update is a bit buggy I finally got it to start downloading. Recalculates route fast. Slow response to second character typed in while using location search mode. Really happy with it so far.

I’m not a stranger to the Nuvi having already owned a 150W, so I expected the 755T to work just as well. Since I live in a heavily congested area here on Long Island, I was very intrigued on whether the traffic feature would help avoid traffic problems. On my very first trip with the 755T to upstate NY, the device warned me of a major slowdown on the Long Island Expressway and guided me around the problem. Throughout the trip the device was flawless with it’s directions and warnings and I couldn’t be more pleased. One comment I might make is that software and map updates from the Garmin website can ve very slow. When I registered the device with Garmin, I noticed that a map and software upgrade was available and decided to upgrade the software first. After almost three hours I called customer service and after talking with the technician got the device fully upgraded with new software in about five minutes. However, I could not have known about the abbreviated procedure without calling Garmin. Their technicians are excellent and before any upgrades are attempted, you should call Garmin first.

    1. Garmin still hasn’t made custom or scenic routing easy. You need a friend with a civil engineering degree at FEMA or the Forestry Service to use the software.

    2. Cumbersome to get back on a pre-planned scenic route if any detour is taken.

    3. Garmin’s initial software update and map upload still takes a dedicated day and usually a call to Customer Support.

    4. The device can only be plugged into DC with the mounting adapter attached. Very cumbersome and is apparently designed so that the fragile connector doesn’t render the entire device useless when it breaks.

    5. Since it can only be charged with the mounting adapter attached, it cannot be charged inside any of the slip-in cases that fit properly.

    6. Touch screen not as good as the older StreetPilot c550.

    7. Audio-out gets confused when switching from the audio cable to internal speaker.

    8. FM-out is poor quality and not level.

    9. Surprised that map detail was very poor when traveling cross country and don’t know why there’s more local detail than when I’m a thousand miles away.

The keyboard is VERY touchy and sometimes types the wrong letter/number. The menu could be a little more easy to use. As for as the value for the money; it’s very much worth the money I paid.

I purchased this GPS unit to use on a Harley Ultra Classic. Even though it’s a car GPS it does all the things I need it to very well. I don’t spend much time looking at the screen, the voice prompts, the MP3 player and the fact I can use an auxiliary cable to plug into my bike’s factory radio setup is what sold me. I got some anti vibration tape from work, a RAM mount and away I went. Have used it on about a dozen trips so far and every time I use it it gets better and better. I found links to put in custom POI’s and downloading songs and making playlists for the MP3 is a breeze. I highly recommend the Nuvi 755t for either a car or motorcyle application.

A really good model of the Garmin GPS. I bought this GPS almost a year ago, and I didn’t regret from buying it. It’s features are awesome!!!

In terms of features (junction view, lane assist, 3D building view, included traffic receiver) you get for your $$$ this unit is hard to beat, same goes for ease of use. However this unit still suffers the same exact quality issues it had when it was initially released more than a year ago – horrible touchscreen accuracy. If you will search the internet you will find many stories of people having this issue in the past with whole 7×5 series (755, 765, etc.) and same issue still exists even today. The first unit I have received was pretty bad – no matter where you would press on the screen, it would “register” the pressing at totally random portion of the screen most of the time, the replacement unit I’ve got a couple of days ago still has the same issue, though much less severe (but still extremely annoying). Calibrating the touchscreen does absolutely nothing, the only way you can try to “compensate” for it is by pressing on the screen harder and longer. Just to compare to previous Garmin units – my previous generation unit, Nuvi 750, had absolutely perfect touchscreen accuracy regardless of how hard/long you would press on its screen.
