Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

Overall rating:

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portable GPS navigators with its nüvi 765T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio–including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks–from the device to your car radio.

Garmin’s nüvis pack top of the line features into a slim form factor..

New to the nüvi 7×5 lineup is Garmin’s HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 765T includes Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone and free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver.

The Garmin nüvi 7×5 Series
  • nüvi 755T: North American maps, GTM 20 traffic receiver with lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 765T: Adds Bluetooth handsfree communication; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 775T: Pre-loaded European and North American maps; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic, Bluetooth
  • nüvi 785T: Adds enhanced MSN Direct traffic receiver; includes North American maps and Bluetooth

As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for North America (United States, Canada and Puerto Rico) with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. The Garmin nüvi 7×5 line features three other models–check out their spec highlights at the right and click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nüvi GPS navigators.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

The nüvi 765T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Important Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

With Lane Guidance, the nüvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted.

With Junction View, you’ll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage–signs not needed for navigation are faded.

Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nüvi 7×5 series, you’ll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you’ll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren’t needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information–the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.

All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. Watch informational video

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous–there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi’s touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone’s call history log.

HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care – supermarket-cleaners – office – day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you’ve found the best router, the “Route Planning” feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, “the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.” The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we’re talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.

Where Am I? Where’s My Car?
The nüvi 7×5 series is the first to answer two common questions: “Where am I?” and “Where’s my car?” At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 7×5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos

Using Garmin’s Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.
  • Choose from Panoramio’s collection of photos from around the world.
  • Easy to use interface displays photos on Google Maps.
  • Search for photos by location name or map area boundary.
  • Transfer photos directly from Garmin Connect to device with the Garmin Communicator.
  • View photos in Google Earth.

Other Features

The 3D Buildings feature helps you navigate by landmark.

  • The 3D Buildings feature is able to reference the buildings displayed on the map as well. Some buildings will be grey images “extruded” from the map, other buildings will be life like representations of the actual property.
  • With Automatic Time Zone Transition, you’ll never have to remember to set the time as you travel. When the unit acquires a position fix, it automatically sets the unit to the correct time zone.
  • MP3 player compatible with audiobook playback
  • JPEG picture viewer
  • FM transmitter plays voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle’s stereo system
  • Compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide, which provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts.
  • Add custom points of interest (POIs) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras

Reviews

  1. by John Eric Hudgins

I choose to give myself 90+days before writing this review so that I could point out the good and the bad that only time and use can expose. All in all, I have been very pleased with this device. My consulting work requires me to be on the road 45+ weeks a year. If it is in the United States and 2 to 4 hours from an airport I have probably had to drive there in the past, and certain “garden spots” like Newark, NJ present a particular challenge.

I purchased the 765T not only to navigate, but also to manage the phone without a headset or separate Bluetooth device. Also, I wanted to be able to listen to the audio books that I have on my phone through the auto sound system. So Bluetooth and the FM interface are both highly important to me.

    Let’s talk about the device.

    THE GOOD

    * Easy to use

    * Generally very accurate

    * Has great contrast

    * Adequate battery life where I have needed it

    * Good battery life after it tells you low battery

    * Reliable Bluetooth connection

    * Good satellite reception

    * Generally fast satellite reception

    * Quick and accurate response to missed turns

    ROOM FOR IMPROVMENT

*I have succeeded only once in getting this device to play media from my phone (I have no idea how I did it)

*I have stopped bothering with the FM Interface. No comparison to my Motorola T505. If it manages to find a radio station it likes, you usually cannot find the signal, but if you do, it doesn’t hold it very long. I probably have not given it enough opportunity in the sticks yet…

*The directions have gone wonky three times since purchase, and all three have occurred in Massachusetts. One made my late with a client, one almost cost me a missed flight and first class upgrade. The other simply baffled my wife and I. It has always occurred on an interstate where it suddenly reroutes down some winding country road or through one of the many villages in Mass…this is definitely “Not the Thing” if you are on the way to a place.

    * Unit simply does not have enough volume

Summary: This is admittedly my first stand alone GPS unit, though I worked with MS Streets and Trips for at least five years. I love this thing. I travel quite a bit, and this has been a good one. I am disappointed in the FM interface (so far) and in the volume, but otherwise this thing has shining parts and several co-workers and my wife have been impressed with it. A good buy. Were I to ask for improvement from Garmin, I would focus on the things above, as well look for a slight improvement in screen quality and a real time unit (a dream) or web interface to allow you to add sites or provide status on sites in the unit. Over all, an A-, 8 out of 10, etc…

although this unit has some improvements

in terms of ease of use, I prefer my old Nuvi 660

the keyboard buttons are too small with this unit

what I do like is the posted speed limits next to

my actual speed- that in itself will pay for the

unit if it saves me one ticket- and in the mean time

saves a lot of stress- now all Garmin needs to do is

have a light or chime when my actual speed exceeds

    the posted speed.

I purchased the “factory refurbished” unit and had trouble with the units volume and the unit did not synchronize via the supplied cable on the internet. The unit had to be returned.

I will try out the “new” version as the details look to be exactly what we need

  4. by John C. Needham Jr.

This unit pretty much does it all. I purchased it mainly for my motorcycle and it performs very well. As with most things like this, there are a few very minor quirks. However, the overall performance of this GPS is excellent. May have to get another for the car.

  5. by Carlos Fuentes

THIS NEW ITEM OVER ALL IS TERRIFIC!!!, THE ONLY PROBLEM IS WHEN I CHOOSE THIS UNIT , I GET IT FOR IS IN MY OWN CAR AND ALSO FOR MY COMMERCIAL TRUCK….AND GUESS WHAT? THIS NEW GARMIN UNITS JUST WORK FOR CAR, PEDESTRIAN OR BICYCLES..NO MORE FOR COMMERCIAL TRUCK, IF U NEED CAR/TRUCK UNIT PICK THE ITEM WITH LETER “T”. WHEN I CALL GARMIN FOR TRUCK SETTING, THEY JUST TELL ME SORRY, THAT UNIT DOESN’T WORK FOR TRUCKS, NOW I CAN’T RETURN MY GARMIN BECAUSE IS PASS 30 DAYS.

I love the Nuvi. The mp3/gps integration works well, it locks on to the gps signals quickly, and generally always works.

I’m giving it a 4 star (and thinking it deserves 4 1/2 stars), so you know I’m pretty happy with it. That being said, there are always a few things that could be better.

    – FM broadcast power seems weak.

    – When using FM broadcast the unit occasionally transmits carrier but no audio. The radio station is silent (as opposed to staticy if the Nuvi is off) but no sound is heard. To clear this condition I have to power off the Nuvi and power it back on.

I solved the above two problems by using a tape deck insert. If I didn’t use the tape insert I’d still love my Nuvi, it would just require an occasional power cycle.

I ordered the Garmin Nuvi 765T for my husband’s birthday. It was a refurbished model. It arrived well-packaged and looked to be easy to operate. After registering the Garmin online, we decided to download the “free map” download that Garmin offered. Big mistake…After downloading the map info, the next step was to extract the info from the computer to the Garmin…It was unable to complete the process…We tried and tried. We contacted customer support service online. They did their best to help, to no avail. We called customer support on the phone. A very nice specialist spent over an hour with me and checked the files out and tried installing them from his end. Finally, he was successful and we thought we had the problem licked, since NOW we could actually see the maps and the keyboards etc. on the unit, where before there was nothing…We took it out for a test run and discovered that when we put in an address or destination, the Garmin consistently responded, “unable to calculate route”…Again, we contacted customer support and after a few online conversations back and forth, were told to return the unit in exchange for a new one…So, that is where we stand now…A month later…the Garmin never functioned properly and it has been sent back to Olathe, Kansas…We are awaiting a replacement…You can be sure that we will NOT attempt to update the maps on the second Garmin…

This Garmin Nuvi 765T is awesome. I have had 2 other GPS systems, the Magellan Maestro and a Tom-Tom One. The Nuvi 765T blows them away. Starting with the display, it is very appealing and its view makes following it a breeze. The verbal navigating instructions are easy to follow and detailed. It gives plenty of warning for route changes so you don’t miss your spot. When approaching a change it gives the names of roads and routes in its verbal instructions so you just don’t hear turn left or right. It will say turn left on Royalton road. It has shown to be accurate although NO GPS IS PERFECT this seems to be as close as you get.

  9. by Michael Sarris

I’m not so sure the 765T is really that much better than the 340 Street Pilot that I just gave up. The 340 had more trip details available but then again I can’t be totally sure as I havene’t had the chance to check out all features of the 765.

My GPS was stolen from a rental car in January, right after I got it for Christmas! I was so sad, and wanted to shop for another unit to replace it. When I was shopping, I looked at price and quality, and ended up getting exactly the same unit, because I enjoyed using the original and it was so easy to figure out. Overall, it is not difficult to figure out how to set up the defaults, and monitor usage of gas, trip tallys, and all sorts of other great features, including detours and lane assist. An excellent choice for someone who is not techno savvy, or someone who wants something easy to use!

  11. by KT22Mike

it is almost impossible to properly type in a location as the keys are too close together. You would have thought with a bigger screen this would not have been a problem.

But I have yet to enter in one address without an error. Look for another brand.

  12. by ELEV

I just received my GPS a few days ago, but so far I love it. I’ve read other reviews, and the only negative comment that I seemed to notice was that the touch screen was finicky. So far, I haven’t noticed this issue once. I love the fast GPS updates, the speed limit display, and the fact that it speaks and displays the street names on the route. My friends and family all have the basic Garmin that you can get for $100, but for $80 more this is much worth the money!

  13. by T. Morrow

This being my 1st GPS & after months of research I wonder how I ever did without it! Map upgrade & registration were very easy & trouble free, of course I use a MAC! I have used it on many local statewide trips & just recently a 2000+ mile trip. WORKED FLAWLESSLY! Traffic updates in Atlanta, GA warned me so I could avoid the traffic jams, custom & built in POI’s were wonderful, ease of use we were all playing with it without any problems.

I can’t say enough good about this product.

  14. by J. A. Frederick

Couldn’t be happier with this Garmin. It has all the bells and whistles I was looking for and is a breeze to use. Don’t know how I did without a Garmin in the past.

  15. by MD Boatbum

This is our 3rd Garmin GPS. The features are awesome, the navigation is spot on. However, the unit is balky, routinely freezes up for a second between commends. The bluetooth seems to be kind of unreliable with a Blackberry, not a new problem for Garmin. The touchscreen is off, albeit only slightly. I have large fingers, so this may cause it. My wife doesn’t seem to have issues.

This being Garmin’s bazillionth generation GPS, you’d think these routine isues would be a thing of the past. Kinda sorry we didn’t go with a new one.

  16. by S. Margolis

This is my second Garmin, I would really like it if the keyboard worked better. Even though the keys on the keyboard appear to be larger then my 1st Garmin, it is much harder to use since the keyboard is off a bit. This means that unless I am solidly in the middle of a key I want to press a different value appears. For example when I press the M key I might actually get an N. When I hit the erase button to fix these mistakes something else would appear. Neither my wife or I had this problem with our old Garmin so I know it is this unit. For this reason I can’t recommend this unit to anyone.

  17. by KWP

I purchased the Nuvi 765 refurbished unit as a replacement for my Nuvi 680 which was damaged beyond repair. The 765 has most of the features of the 680 except that Garmin removed the satellite acquisition screen from the 680, so I felt this unit was the perfect replacement. When first examining the 765 upon receipt, I noticed that it was not properly reading my touches on its touch-screen display, and re-calibrated it. After several first uses, the touch-screen was still not responding correctly. For instance, when using the keyboard to type in street names, letters would appear that are several keys away from the one I was touching. Subsequent attempts to calibrate the touch-screen display did not fix the problem, leaving me to wonder if the unit was returned to Garmin for that very reason (and Garmin did not fix it). Once I get past the keyboard entry problem, the unit functions extremely well as a GPS unit.

I broke my own rule by buying the model of something (in this case, a GPS device for the car) that was rated as best by Consumer Reports magazine. The model is not terrible, but it’s no great shakes either. Trying it out for the first time today, I found that

    1) It wanted me to make several turns in order to drive between two locations on the same street–no need for that.

    2) On a longer trip today (about 50 miles each way), it suggested unnecessary detours on the way there and on the way home–the detours occurred at different places on the two legs of the trip.

    3) It told me to turn ONTO the street that I was already driving on. Since the street was straight, there was no turn to make.

    4) It told me to turn the wrong way out of the parking lot to get home from the gas station this morning.

So what are the good features? It does indicate in certain tricky spots which lane you want to use before you attempt your next turn. It reminds of you the posted speed limit (with a short time delay). This is handy in rural areas where speed limits signs can be sparse. It has handy features for finding nearby gas stations, restaurants, etc. And it does give fairly accurate reminders of how far it is until your next turn–assuming that it has planned a reasonable route in the first place.

So it’s best to use this device as a real-time supplement to, but not replacement for, a session with a good old-fashioned map before you leave the house.

  19. by Frank S. Zarmsky

The unit did not turn on at all.

Very disapppointed, the manufacturer is supposed to fix units returned in the first place.

  20. by Iraima Correa

this is the best gps I have had and the price seems very good I think it is worth every penny
