Easy to Use Right Out of the Box

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use
One of Garmin’s key product philosophies is, “to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box,” and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin’s portable navigation devices.

Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Voice Recognition

Usable voice recognition is something we’ve been waiting to see for a  long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn’t just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There’s even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The nüvi 800s aren’t the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, “listen.” The other is, “stop listening”. Hit the “listen” button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, “find nearest Italian restaurant,” for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say “go to” and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi 880 also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, “find place, Starbucks,” if that’s your coffee mojo.

Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

Enhanced MSN Direct Content (9-month free subscription)

traffic reports An integrated receiver allows you to access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.
  • Free 9 month trial subscription to MSN Direct services, activation instructions provided
  • MSN Direct Traffic Receiver (GDB 55) included in the box
  • Extended MSN Direct service subscriptions available for purchase: 12 months for $49.95 + tax (visit MSN for further details)

Widescreen — See More of What’s Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Wider screen lets you see more of what’s around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

3-inch screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

4.3-inch screen

Multi-Destination Routing

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care – supermarket-cleaners – office – day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you’ve found the best router, the “Route Planning” feature lets you  save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, “the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.” The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we’re talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.

Where Am I?

Garmin’s “Where Am I?” feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.

On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap “Where Am I?” to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say “Where am I?” to get the info.

Where’s My Car?

Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

First-Rate Map Data

nüvi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs). View larger.

Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

In addition, nüvi accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

Hands-Free Calling

In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi’s Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi’s touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone’s call history log.

Garmin Lock

Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location

Beyond Navigation

Browse your stored pictures with an easy-to-use JPEG viewer.

Navigation is just the beginning. The nüvi 880 features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, MP3 player, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.

This device is compatible with optional content plug-ins available via microSD card, such as the  Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs

note that the 800 series is unique among nüvis, in that the 800s use microSD cards, where all other nüvis use SD cards..

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras.

A handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards.

I started with the Garmin IQ3600 then got a Nuvie 680 (this is a great GPS) and now I have the Nuvi 880. I bought it because of the voice activate control. When it works it is great. However, it is not as great as I had hoped. Rain, wind, radio, traffic noise will make it almost useless. I have yelled and screamed many time at the device only to be ignored. If you are parked or it is quit then it works very well. The Nuvi 880 is a great GPS even without the voice activation. The features over the 680 made it worth the update cost.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and he loves it. It has many features that he loves to use on it like the music player. The speech recognition is OK. We sometimes have to repeat ourselves like 5 times to get what we want, but it works just as good without utilizing that feature. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a good navigation system.

  3. by John Olendy

I have had the 880 for 2 years now and thought i would write a review to steer people away from this product. I would imagine the whole Nuvi line is based on the same specs (cpu, internals) so this would apply to the whole line of Nuvi products.

Overall i rate this product a 1 star and would not recomend it to anyone. I have loved Garmin products in the past especially the street pilot series which i still use over the nuvi series. This Nuvi line is of poor quality. My 880 has gone back to garmin on 2 occasions and still has quite a few problems.

My newest issue is that it decides to stop working and lock up on long trips. This happens without notice, so picture yourself driving on a long highway and not noticing the unit has stopped working. Meanwhile your turn off has long passed. This goes easily unnoticed as you only glance at the unit every once in a while when driving.

All in all, i would avoid the Garmin line and try another brand. These Nuvi units are GARBAGE. I am not sure what is good out there, but will research Magellan and some others if i were you.

This was given as a 70th birthday present for me dad who likes road trips. He is enjoying the Garmin.

I bought this for my wife because she is geographic illerate. Didn’t think I would like it at all (maybe because i’m a guy and don’t need directions),but we took it on a ski trip north day after christmas. We hit an ice storm that had semi’s and cars unable to make it and down hills. Had it not been for the garmin and the detour feature we would have never had made it. We would get some were the road was blocked and hit detour take us right a round and be on our way again.

I never really thought about buying a GPS for my car. Most of my experience with these have been in rental cars. Those were Magellan systems and they were awsome I thought in strange towns.

At the time of purchasing this Garmin unit, I was in yet another strange town and my rental car didn’t have the option. So I shopped around local places and online. This GPS is almost awsome! Why “almost” you ask? Well the only complaint I have is that there are a couple of game features on it but they are trial versions. Suprised to find the classic Missle Command game installed I couldn’t resist to play it for a bit. It is a great version of the game until you find out it’s a trial version then it stops and says you got to buy the full version…COME ON! for the price these stupid little games should be free – don’t you think? This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

Well about the GPS – You will not be disappointed with the ease of use, clairity of the touch screen and the blue tooth function works pretty good. It updates itself and is pretty accurate if you get that option. The windshield mounting system works very well. It even adjusts brightness automatically for day or night use. It is funny, now I seem to use it in my home town cause it is fun seeing what routes it selects compared to my chosen path.

I received my Garmin Nuvi 880 just before heading up North to Maine for a Vacation. It arrived early. The “extra” charger that I thought I might need did not fit the product which requires a special charger to get MSN so be careful—not the sellers fault–I thought maybe the seller would short change the order and leave out critical parts whcih was not the case. The unit came complete with special charger, mounts and instructions.

I love the unit but most of all having dealt with Garmin in the past, I know they they are very customer oriented and was shown that agin on a question regarding the remote which they sent out a backup just in case. I had had a Tom Tom just prior and their customer service was terrible.

Very satisfied with the product just concerned that right after I bought it it became “obsolete” and they stopped making that model even though consumers gave it the highest grade.

I own Nuvi 660 and 880. The bluetooth option works flawlessly on 660 because the speaker is loud and clear. On 880, this is a major problem, the voice and reception is bad. I managed to fix it by running a headphones cable (3.5mm rca) from Nuvi to Aux jack in the car. It works great.

  9. by Russell D. Carlton

Very disappointed! The route directions at times make no sense whatever. I have to use Google Maps as well because I cannot rely on the directions from the Garmin!

A lot of money for a product that is inferior!

  10. by siafu

My goodness this is one incredible piece of equipment, it’s absolutely worth the money I spent for it, a winner, I absolutely love it. I recently spent some time getting lost on a trip into LA’s tangled freeway jungle and the Nuvi got me back on track quickly, accurately, every time. Nice — thank you Garmin and thank you too Amazon!

  11. by Candy99Tx

This unit is wonderful. The audio is great, the screen can easily be seen in bright daylight, and the maps are easy to read. This unit can do multiple things and we have not tried everything, but what we have tried is amazing. I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to use a simple but very effective navigator.

I had resisted getting a GPS because “I don’t need one,” but my wife ordered the Nuvi 880 for me for Christmas, and it is one of the best presents I have received. I will admit upfront that I use the British female voice, which is labeled “Emily” in the menu, and now we both talk quite easily about Emily as if she were a member of the family (one with a fantastic sense of direction!).

I have found it easy to use, with a bright and clear display and simple controls. The voice recognition feature works very well (as long as the radio isn’t on very loud). We used the “alternate route” option when we were stuck on an unmoving I-95 in SC right after Christmas and received a very effective detour. We spent a week at Hilton Head Island and programmed in the various restaurants, golf courses, and stores we were going to, and Emily took us to all of them flawlessly.

Since returning to Miami I have found her routing to be somewhat point-to-point instead of the “back roads” that I tend to use from decades of driving experience here, making me wish she had some kind of “learning” feature when one overrides her proffered route several times. But that is a minor quibble about a really impressive piece of technology.

I recommend this GPS to anyone who wants to go top-of-the-line.

Bought this for my wife (a non-techie), knowing it had many more features than she’d use or care about, but I like the tech toys and knew with its portability that it would find its way in to my vehicle from time to time. Was a bit skeptical about the voice/word recognition/accuracy, but was happy to tap the screen if all else failed. Got the until JUST in time for an 800 mile trip by car, but too late to read even page 1 of the “how to” guide. So my wife and I took turns giving it a shake-out on the actual drive. Within 40 minutes we had exhausted all the menu’s and pretty much knew how to use every feature – all by trial and error. There were 5 of us in the car and we all took turns asking it to find a different POI – mainly restaurants. No voice training or anything – this thing just “understood” about 95% of what was being said, even from the back seat. Amazing word recognition capabilities. Took a while to figure out how to get POI’s to show up on the live map as we were driving along, but other than that it was smooth sailing, and one of those rare times when one is pleasantly surprised by a product that does just what it claims, and more importantly does the job we needed it to do. Another surprise – without activating anything (we didn’t have time) we were surprised to get live high wind warnings for a portion of the drive along the Great Lakes where the weather really was bad. Nicely done. I’d recommend this unit to anyone who wants to be able to truly operate a high-end GPS unit totally hands free, and not have to repeat themselves over and over again to a machine. Garmin gets a double thumbs-up for the voice processing on this unit.

  14. by Jay D. Gensler

The 880 has been discontinued (right after I bought it), but it works great. Especially the MSN Direct traffic capability. Save quite a bit of time by avoiding back-ups on the Baltimore beltway and I95.

  15. by Jeffrey B. York

I bought this unit as a gift due to the ease of use with the voice recognition. The person has been very happy with it and has had no problems. She was even surprised that it found a different and quicker route than one that she was use to. It acquires quickly and the voice activation makes it a snap to use.

this is my first GPS. what else can i say just awesome!!!! totally awesome!!!! you cannot get lost with this device. this nuvi 880 is just superb! i would recommend to everyone i know. just can’t say enough i wonder what took me so long to get one. i guess till the 880 got released. to anyone wanting a GPS this is it look no further.

  17. by J. Anderson

I have had my Garmin for 3 wks & love it. It is not as accurate as I’d hoped but has not gotten me lost in areas I don’t know. I live in Huntsville & have used it mostly to get to places I know, trying to get there faster, but occasionally to locations I’m not familiar with. I was disappointed today when it tried to take me 3 streets further than my destination was & wanted me to backtrack to my destination. I did not see how that would save me any time. It does have a problem with the abbreiation drive “Dr”; it pronounces it “doctor” but it’s really not a big deal. Overall I think it’s great & it’s quite accurate. I am very happy with it & love the hands free part of it except the text messaging through the GPS. When the bluetooth is activated on my phone, the text messaging is available on the GPS. I have tried to send txt messages through the GPS via bluetooth but the recipients did not receive the message until I deactivated my phone & sent another msg. through my phone only. Also it does not update the inbox msgs when bluetooth is activated; usually a day behind (sometimes up to a week) on the msgs that are seen on the GPS of my phones inbox. It does work excellently with making & receiving calls via the bluetooth.

Garmin nuvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

We have had a Garmin 2620 Street Navigator for years. The Nuvi 880 is a fantastic step forward. Easy to use, great graphics, so many features we haven’t tried them all yet. Voice commands work wondrously. A must buy for the serious traveler.

Product is more than what I need. The Garmins are user friendly, but this model has too many features to make it practical.
