Garmin StreetPilot 7200 7-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
| Overall rating: |
|

The StreetPilot 7200’s huge 7-inch touch-screen display means you’ll always see where you’re going, from anywhere in the vehicle. Designed for larger vehicles such as RVs, semi-trucks, and buses, it is a premium automotive unit that comes preloaded with City Navigator NT detailed maps of North America. With the purchase of an optional sensor (not included), the unit notifies the driver of accidents, road construction and weather-related traffic delays before they are encountered (requires subscription, traffic service only for select cities where coverage exists). Either of two optional purchase sensors can provide these features, the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic sensor or the GXM 30 Smart Antenna (separate purchase required). In addition to traffic data, the GXM 30 provides real-time satellite weather information. The 7200 model features all of Garmin’s well-known GPS functions, including intuitive navigation and automatic route calculation; voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions; 2D or 3D map view; and automatic rerouting if a motorist strays off course. With its POI Loader software, users can load custom points-of-interest such as school zones or safety cameras. The StreetPilot 7200 also includes entertainment options, including an internal MP3 player, XM radio, and playback of audio books. The built-in MP3 player lets users browse music by artist, album, song, or genre. The XM Radio (with the optional GXM 30 Smart Antenna and XM Satellite Radio subscription – not included) features 150-plus channels of commercial-free entertainment. The StreetPilot 7200 is also compatible, a subscription-based audio book service. The face of the StreetPilot 7200 only has one button, an on/off switch. Using simplicity to manage complexity is a hallmark of the quality from Garmin, the premier maker of GPS products.

good but dont last long
this was the first GPS i bought on amazon, it was very good until the screen started going off while i was driving. had to pull over to try to turn it back on and go back on my way. the gps doesn’t go off but just the screen, like you would hear the instruction but not se the map on the screen. i guess this was a sign of it not working at all very soon, because a month later it stopped working, completely
i have to admit the directions are very accurate and unlike the GPS i have right now, this would tell you where you destination is (wether it is on the left or right, and would routing would stop only when you arive at the destination) the one i have right now works great but wont take you exactly to you destination
Do not buy … before you read this. this is old unit.
Firstly, please make sure that you realize that this unit is 7 years old and thusly does not have the functionality that you would think it would have.
I purchased this by mistake thinking it was a newer model.
Upon receiving the item I was immediately disappointed for 2 reasons:
1) I realized that the XM radio feature only worked if you purchased a $200 ( additional ) antenna.
2) That it did not have a battery so if you unplug it or turn off your car you will lose all of your information
After 1 month the original stopped working.
I got the replacement and after 2 months that one stopped working.
When I went to return it per manufacturer waranty I was told that since it was such an old model that I would only get a refurbished one. So for the most part I paid for a used device.
The people at garmin were unhelpful and unfriendly and non-sypathetic. It took me 45 minutes to get through to their support number and they could not do anything without a serial number that I didnt have. They were unwilling to take the item back or do anything else to help the situation.
I will personally never buy a garmin again because of the lack of customer support.
Please do some reasearch before purchasing this device.
BEST GPS
I bought this unit for our motorhome. Most of the reviews have listed all the features so I will not repeat them, but my two favorites are large screen and the voice naming the streets. This is one great unit. Not for small cars due to huge screen size. I don’t think any units made have a larger screen. If you need “big” then this is the unit for you. Because the voice names the streets you can keep your eyes on the road almost all of the time. You won’t be disappointed.
GREAT PERFORMER
I read the reviews and painfully tried to decide which unit was for me. As a first time buyer of a GPS unit it wasn’t easy. One of my first concerns was getting a large screen. But, was a seven inch screen too big for a Honda CRV. No, absolutely not! How is the sound and speaker quality? Very good! Speed of satellite acquisition? Excellent! Reliability – Does it give accurate directions? Yes! Does it need it’s own batteries? No!
As I looked through all the reviews I was trying to find a unit that people had no complaints about. That didn’t happen. If you’re a seasoned Amazon buyer/researcher you know there’s always unhappy people. So far my Garmin 7200 StreetPilot has performed almost flawlessly. In fact, I do expect it to occasionally make errors. I can live with that. But overall, it’s a great product with a lot to offer. While reading the reviews I learned that this was a discontinued model. That really didn’t bother me. But my suggestion to you when you’re considering buying a discontinued model, is to act fast. I paid a little more than I wanted to pay. I paid $400.00 for my StreetPilot about three months ago. It is now on sale for $800.00. In other words. The price has doubled in about three months. Think how I would feel if I fell in love with it and waited a little too long? Now, I feel like the unit is very good and am glad I bought it when I did. Of course, now the question is if this unit is worth $800.00 and still climbing? Maybe. But I would no longer be able to afford it.
Garmin StreetPilot 7200 7 Inch GPS from Amazon.com
I purchased this GPS to use in my motorhome. It has surpassed all my expectations. I especially like the size of the screen. It is very user friendly and the programming is very easy to master. I would recommend it to any first time buyer and also any old time gps user. The support is great if you have any kind of a problem. I also purchased from Amazon.com a second mount so that I could move the unit to a second vehicle. Very easy to move from vehicle to vehicle. If I need a second one it will be another 7200 Garmin.
Not so good
I bought this unit as a replacement for a nuvi 350 which was an excellent piece of hardware.I wanted the video input feature so I could use it for my screen for my reverse video camera.I am currently on my third unit as the 2 previous ones failed (could not acquire satellites) at inconvenient times in the middle of long trips leaving me to go to AAA for for folding maps to get home with. The unit works well when it works but it seems to have very iffy engineering as far as dependability is concerned. Garmin’s response time to failure problems is not the worst I’ve encountered but certainly not world class. My biggest concern at the moment is that the latest unit will fail just beyond the 1 yr guarantee limit and I will be stuck with a very expensive fishing weight. As near as I can interpret the guarantee extends from day one of purchase of original unit so when my year is up and this unit fails even though it only lasts a few months it will not be replaced for no charge. I would not recommend this unit! I am on #3 and it’s been only 5 months.
I never get lost!
The Street Pilot 7200 is all as advertised. The large screen is easy to see and makes reading the street or highway names very easy. It has proven to be very easy to use and is very accurate. Down loading shape files and other survey data is very easy using the memory card. I have no complaints after my first month of use. I count on it every day for my work and has proven to be a valuble tool. The pile of maps that would normally reside on the passenger seat is now obsolete. I love this product and it is the best Christmas gift I have ever recieved. I highly recommend it for anyone who does any amount of traveling.
Large Screen Easy to Read
The only downfall of this unit is because of the size it is harder to dashmount without blocking your view.
State of the art; top of the line
I’ve owned the Garmin 2730 for about three years and I loved it. I happened to notice this one with the larger screen, plus additional features, and it worked with the XM antenna I already had. The suction cup and bean bag mounts were inter-changeable as well. I drive a charter bus, and this is absolutely the best investment I have ever made. I don’t have to squint to read the information like I did with the other unit, which I now use in my car which already has XM.
Driver
The Garmin 7200 7 inches is awesome. You can read directions from quite a distance and under any light.it is very easy to install. Amazon had the best price around.
However, now for the third time, it blows my car fuse. Should I know if it is a defect of my cable or of my Garmin?
Thank you
Damn it’s AWESOME
Just took a motorcycle trip.Put in an address it was right on the mark,at the front door.only neg. thing it’s not weather proof, but a clear baggie and you can keep on down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I searched a lot of sites but amazon had the best prices!!!!!!
Turn off brain Turn on GPS
I looked at many gps systems and found Garmin to probably be the best. I wanted a large screen because I didn’t want to have to squint or try and make out where I am going at freeway speeds on a four inch screen. This one is seven inches and that is easy to see. I can push enter my settings or searches or I can use a remote. I can sit back and use the remote to go where I want. Ease of use is there… for locations I can set it to home and push hoome and it goes there. If I like a place where I am at… I add it to favorites and then I can go there again and again… if I have searched for something and gone there… forgot how to get there or don’t want to put in a big complicated search… I go to recent searches and voila… there is is and I click on that… and then it finds it and then GO TO and it tells me how to go there. I have always been a little indimidated by gps systems… and the other guy things was I don’t need one… I can do it. I tell you… I have driven up into Canada where everything is FRENCH… and this thing told me step by step how to get around… it even offered me a baggette. Look… this is a great system… I actually bought two from amazon for they had the cheapest price…. I bought a portable one for my Moms car and I actually bought one for my truck that is permanent… but has no monitor… it works with the monitor I have and the sound comes out through my speakers and I can adjust it through my speakers… as to the sound on my Moms… I seriously thought it was going to be very weak… Not at all… it is perfect… you will have problems listening at all. For my Moms… she calls her Mrs. Worthington… because I did the English accent on hers… and mine is Sally because she just has a American accent… if there is such a thing. Bottom line… you will get VERY VERY lazy with these… you will not pay attention how to get to places and therefore you will not remember how to get there or learn it. You will GPS it every single time… that is the only bad thing about these that I can see. But if you do it a few times… to the same place… you will start to remember but then what fun is that if you don’t hear it say… in 1.5 miles… turn right… nothing is cooler than that. I will never go back.
garmin 7200 gps
great gps easy to see and operate i on two now one on my honda goldwing 1800 for 6 years and now one in my car its easy to useand has great fitures with mp 3 xm radio and video books to read and you can hook up a back video cam if you want to
GPS AT ITS BEST
THE GARMIN 7200 IS A BETTER UNIT THAN MY FACTORY SYSTEM IN A NEW VEHICLE—I AM LOOKING FOREWARD TO USING IT OUR MOTORHOME IN THE NEAR FUTURE-THE LETTERING IS LARGE AND SOOO CLEAR ////
Great device, but not exactly perfect
I have owned this GPS for a few weeks now and for a while debated on whether to keep it or return it. In the end, I have decided that the features I like about it outweigh the negatives, so I will stick with my purchase.
Here are the main features I like about it:
1. It has a large 7-inch screen, which is bright and sharp. This screen size is very difficult to find on any model of any brand and for me was the biggest selling feature.
2. It can play MP3 music, but keep in mind that this is the ONLY recordable format it can play. If you have wma files, for example, you will have to convert them to MP3.
3. It has a removable SD card that you can add music or POI files to. I use a 4GB card that it reads with no problem.
4. You can download POI files and categorize them. You can also add customized POI icons that appear on the map as you are driving. You can set an alert to inform you of the POI as you get close to the location, and choose the range at which you want the alert to sound.
5. You can use it to play XM radio through, with the additional purchase of an antenna Garmin GXM30 XM Satellite Antenna for GPSMap 376C, 7200 and 7500 (010-00423-00), which is fairly expensive, I might add.
6. With the XM radio added, the 7200 will download and display traffic information as well as weather information. This service costs extra to your regular XM subscription.
7. It has an audio out jack, so if your car radio has an auxiliary in jack you can hook it straight into your radio via a patch cable. When driving and listening to XM (or MP3), the music stops while it gives you street-named directions, and then the music comes back on again. Admittedly, this can get annoying if a song is on you like and several directions in a row come around. You can, however, turn the voice direction off and just watch the screen. You can also transmit through the FM radio, which I have not tried.
8. It does not require an external antenna for the GPS reception, although a jack for one is available on the back of the unit. I keep it on my dash and the GPS reception is great without one.
9. It mounts beautifully on a Garmin made bean bag mount Garmin Beanbag for Portable Friction Mount for Garmin GPS Units (Beanbag Only – Mount not Included). I have sitting in a crevace on the dash of an SUV and it does not block my vision at all, even with the large screen size.
10. The touch screen is great. Due to the screen size, it is very easy to read, very responsive, and sounds a pleasing little “click” every time you tap a key.
11. On the routing, it has a handy “take me home” key that can get you going that direction from wherever, quickly and easily.
Things I have found that are not so great:
1. This is probably the biggest one….the early reviewer who stated that it does not show street names in any detail is absolutely correct. I also own a Garmin Quest that is four years old and has a tiny screen, and it shows much, much more street detail than the 7200, even when the 7200 is zoomed in all the way. It does have the latest map and device software/firmware loaded. Oddly, though, the 7200 shows me the name of every single canal I cross over. Why Garmin would think I would want to see canal names instead of the names of the streets is beyond me.
2. It has steered me wrong on several occasions. When I am going to the airport, for example, it will try to take me across the city instead of via the freeway, even though I have it set for “fastest route.” To avoid this, I now have it set so that it believes that the vehicle I am driving is a truck instead of a car. It also once sent me the completely wrong direction while I was in the Florida Keys. After six miles, it told me to make a u-turn. It also tries to take me down a street that is not a through-street when it is routing me home. My older Quest never gave me any of these routing errors.
3. I don’t consider this a big deal, but it does not have an internal battery. So, if you want to take it indoors to enter an address, etc you will need to plug in the AC cord (provided).
4. When it takes you quite a few clicks to get to a screen to do something, it will take you just as many clicks to go back to where you started, normally the map view screen.
5. The XM radio interface is poorly designed. You have three sections for pre-set stations, and each section allows six choices. Moving from one section of pre-sets to the next is cumbersome. They should have set it up for either more favorite stations in each section or perhaps only two sections with nine entries.
Also be aware that this model is now discontinued by Garmin, so this will be about as good as it gets. Some of the newer models have things like the speed limit of the street you are on, vehicle icons that can be customized, etc. Every GPS has some features others don’t, so careful research pays off.
I should also add that if you already have XM capability within your current car radio, this may not be the best choice. If you want to add the XM traffic feature, you have to add the cost of an additional radio as well…you can’t just add the traffic update on its own.
In the final analysis though, because it offers MP3, XM, and a large screen size, I have decided to keep it. This probably sounds odd because the actual GPS capability of the unit is the least reason I decided to keep it. It isn’t bad as far as providing directions, but from my experience it is far from perfect. Hope this long-winded review helped, thanks.
The best and biggest portable GPS in the world!
The StreetPilot 7200 has a huge 7″ LCD screen that is big enough to display all the street names without wearing glasses. This GPS is sensitive and the connection to the satellite is fast. The auto re-routing function is also impressively fast. I would recommend it to everyone I know. Garmin did a good job on this unit.
Garmin StreetPilot 7200
This product has to be the best GPS being sold , if you have a good address this GPS will get you were you say the quickest way possible.
One Great “Tool”
I’ve had the 7200 street pilot for over 3 yrs. and use it for my deliveries in Seattle Washington. It has never failed me, and I’ve never even read the manual. It may not show you all the street names on the screen but it sure does speak the street name about 700′ before you have to turn, plus the name is in large print above the screen. At todays price it’s a no brained!!
GPS With A View
This is an excellent Garmin GPS! At last a screen size that is easy to see and read. It might not be for everyone, because of it’s large size and weight. I use a suction cup mount[...], very heavy duty, and it holds the 7200 up with ease. I highly recommend buying the suction cup mount so you don’t have to “stick the GPS to your dash”. I love the mp3 player built in, it holds about 150 mp3s. Having already owned a Garmin Streetpilot C340 and a Nuvi 255W, the 7200 works in a similar way. The remote is great once you get used to it. Only thing that might bother some people is that being a large screen, it’s not as sharp as it’s smaller brother the Nuvi 255W, however it it still very clear and bright. Prices are great on this 7200 gps from Garmin as it it now a discontinued model.
This is a great unit I give it five stars
I’ve owned two other Garmin units prior to buying this one. I got it a few days prior to leaving on a 6,500 mile 14 state vacation. It worked very good, the only thing I don’t like about Garmin is their map provider still has not corrected a lot of errors across the country. If this was done, then the ubit would be perfect. I love the large screen, makes it easier to see.
I drove truck for five years using the Garmin products, never once used a map, though I carried one. As with any brand, you have to know their limitations and not allow the unit to lead you into a bad area.
