Super fast position recognition
This is much better than the Garmin Nuvi. Once you power it on it only takes a second to be ready and recognize your position. The Nuvi would take minutes sometimes. The navigation is excellent as well. When there is an immediate turn after another the first it show you both in advance. This is really helpful!
A dependable GPS
The GPS was all that it described to be. I was glad I bought it.
Magellan Maestro 4040 GPS
I replaced this item (Magellan Maestro 4040) after having the original stolen and obviously was quite pleased enough to replace it, and the replacement was delivered promptly and in excellent condition. I am very pleased with my experience from Amazon with this transaction. I’ll definitely being doing business with Amazon in the future. Thank you, Andy
refurbished rip-off
i bid on and won an item that was advertised as refurbished, but when it came, the item—a magellan maestro 4040 —–did not work and it was incomplete. the jack where the power cord connects was missing—-it was just a hole in the plastic case and the memory chip which has all the maps and instructions, was missing.
i have filed a claim with amazon and am waiting for a refund.
iwould NEVER do business with these people again !
Maestro does everything I want it to
I happened to go to Canada and Hawaii this year, so I wanted to pick up a GPS that had those maps. After searching for a bit, I found this unit on Amazon for about $80.
It does everything I expect it to including:
text to speech
Alaska (haven’t tried), Hawaii, and Canada maps
a lot of Points of Interest
I like that it can figures out my current location fairly quickly. It seemed to take my Navigon 5-10 minutes to pinpoint the current location.
One negative is the user interface isn’t as intuitive as some other GPS systems I’ve used. If I don’t use it for a few weeks, I forget how to save new locations.
Overall, great value for the money.
Pretty basic GPS
Very reliable, charge lasts a long time. Still trying to to learn to use it. In order to locate a particular store or restaurant, you have to cancel your current trip and enter a POI and most times you won’t find it unless you already have the address. Works great for mapping out shortest and fastest routes and gives random POI places but certainly not all inclusive. My cell phone “Navigator” was pretty inaccurate as far as mapping but it did allow me to select a wide variety of restaurants, stores, etc.
Bought as gift- friend LOVES it
This was a birthday gift for a friend, and she loves it. Says its very easy to use, although she tries not to fiddle with it while driving (cumbersome at times)
Don’t leave home without it…
Purchased recently and took a trip to New Orleans, without the GPS I probably would still be riding around looking for various destinations (apartment hunting). Great product, a MUST have!!
I’m not alone
I’m glad to hear that I am not alone with customer service.
I returned my unit to be serviced (on/off button was pushed into the unit making it useless) and it took a lot of phone calls and screaming before they finally sent me a new system (4 months), I’m not sure if that’s there practice (sending you a new system) or if they actually fix them.
If you do return the system to Magellan, write down all the information, date you sent it, repair number and whom you speak to and his/her identification, hopefully you won’t have to use the information.
The system as a whole (4040) is very good, it has kept me from getting lost many times, one problem is that it at time it gets me where I want to go in a round-about way, still better than being lost.
I just recently updated the map in my system, I had a problem with the battery being weak, my AC charger wouldn’t charge the system so I think that’s gone and I have 2 of them, neither one works, that says a lot about the charger, I plugged the unit in the DC charger in the car and that fully charged it so I able to download the map successfully.
If I had to, I would purchase another one.
The GPS is a good/excellent unit, customer service and the charger suck.
Did not work, defective even though new.
The GPS did not work. It would not even turn on. Returned item for a full refund.
Very good product for the price!
The Magellan Maestro 4040 is a really good unit for $120. The 4040 is quick on start up. I tried the unit right out of the box and the unit seems slow to reroute if I make a short cut I know is faster because of traffic. The unit works well but could be better. I checked the maps and discovered they were database version 27 but an updated database version 31 is free from Magellan if you pay shipping of $10 and apply within 30 days of purchase. The unit I received had software is version 2.62 but Magellan has an updated software version 3.61 free for download on their web site. After the map updates and the software updates were applied the unit seems faster to reroute if I take short cuts and seems to contain a few new streets the old map version did not have installed. I have only used the unit around town and on one 120 mile trip. So far the unit is working great.
Steps I took to get the updates:
1. I ordered a Magellan Maestro 4040 from Amazon.com on Sept. 11, 2009.
2. I registered the product on the Magellan web site.
3. I called Magellan’s support at 800=707-9971 and requested a map update. I was given account # and fax # to send proof of purchase. I faxed the info to Magellan.
4. I received a phone call from Magellan and gave them my credit card info for shipping the maps update. The update arrived within 4 days by FedEx.
5. I installed the 2008/2009 map update database version 31. The map update also updated the software to version 3.01 (I think was the right number)
6. I installed the software update to version 3.61.
Note: Do not install the downloaded software update before you update the maps to version 31. This is from the Magellan web page.
“The software update version corresponds to your map database version:
If you have map database version 27, your software will be updated to v2.62.
If you have map database version 31, your software will be updated to v3.61. ”
My unit is good to go!
Buy this!
All I can say is Buy this GPS. this is the first one I have owned and all I need. The wife took a trip and as she got to the city she was going, never there before, it was raining so hard she could not see the signs, this GPS took her right to the Hotel, no wrong turns. Paid for itself right there!
ok product
I have used it few times. once it could not even find the location. I had to use the mapquest despite having the GPS with me. 3 hours batter life is just a big scam. It only lasts for few mins
mounting kit way too big.
GOOD PRODUCT /BAD SUPPORT
Very good GPS unit but I had purchased a Magellan 4000 and it crapped out on me. I had just recently paid 79.00 for the updated maps and lost it in the 4000. I contacted Magellan directly but they refused to help; therefore, I was out 79.00
This is a reflection on Magellan and not Amazon. It has been a good unit so far, nevertheless.
not completely accurate
I’m disappointed at times with the accuracy of this unit. Many times roads or streets are not in the program. This, in spite of getting the latest update. That in itself was a hassle to get the free update (which cost $10.00). I spent over two weeks trying to resolve the issue and I’m not sure I actually got the update that was labeled. I can’t tell the difference from the original.
I would recommend checking out other units before the purchase of this one.
like it
It seems to be easy to use. Have had 1 problem with not being able to put address in. Road address kept coming up when I needed Drive. Haven’t had a chance to use it that much. But so far I do like it.
Very good purchase
It works like new and looks like new.
I am using it for last 1 month and i never had any problem.
I even got map update for $10
EXCELLENT BUY!!
i was a little skeptical about buying a refurbished nav system but this is an excellent quality nav. i have no complaints at all. everything about this nav i like. accurate directions. map is updated. if you are looking for a good quality nav system but dont wanna pay 300.00- 400.00 bucks! you can’t go wrong!!
So-so device
I guess it’s good for the price; I bought it used, but it’s difficult to get it to do what you want. Also, sometimes it won’t respond to your touch. I’m not that thrilled.
No technical support
The problem with my GPS Magellan Maestro 4040, bought less than 2 years ago, was that the tiny tubular insert into the power receptacle of the unit fell off (which normally should not happen). As the result, the power connector is loose and thus the unit does not work.
I expected that this small part could be replaced, but I was told by a Magellan representative that the (expensive) units beyond the warranty time of 1 year are not serviced and there is no service provider associated with Magellan who would do this. I was offered to exchange my unit for a more advanced one “for just under $500,” which seems to me ridiculous.
I plan to try some electronics shops to see whether they could anything. In any case, I surely will never get another Magellan unit.
