Magellan RoadMate 1412 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

This is a refurbished Magellan RoadMate 1412 GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes. When a Magellan GPS product is shipped back, for whatever reason, it is inspected, tested, and repackaged for resale. The item can no longer sold as “new,” only as “refurbished.” Magellan’s refurbished items are verified to be in original working condition after undergoing an inspection process by factory-qualified service teams. Each Magellan refurbished product comes with a 90-day limited warranty.

Magellan RoadMate 1412
First unit sent did not work. Seller made good on replacement and paid shipping. Second unit worked fine.
Good model for basic users
I found this product easy to use. The spoken instructions are clear, display is good as well.
Few shortcomings that I found are :
1) When you miss the street, it does not say ‘re-calculating’. It automatically computes the new route ..so you don’t come to know instantly if you missed it or not.
2) It sometimes gives wrong directions escpecially in the city / downtown area. It tells you to take left turn when there is no road on the left side.
However, this product is good when using freeways/ highways. Apart from the above 2 issues, I found this product to be good.
Magellan RoadMate 1412 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Extremely reliable and easy to use GPS. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but my mom (the most technologically impaired person i know) loves it and uses this thing every chance she gets. The menu is easy to navigate and understand, text prediction allows for lots of time saved from typing, and there have only been a few instances where addresses were not located on the factory pre-installed maps.
Great entry level GPS at an affordable price.
Replaced after 6 months
This unit’s not bad, it’s just not great.
The directions are so-so, frequently taking me through some weird backroads.
The windshield mount is quite honestly terrible. It had two pivot joints (think two elbows) that move it and it sticks out far from the windshield. Because of that, the suction cup often was pulled from the window due to the weight being so far away. It was annoying. Garmin’s short ball joint mount is much better.
Updating is a pain. Magellan’s website is difficult to navigate, and the maps were frequently not updated. It still said there were roads in my neighbourhood that hadn’t existed for probably 6 years.
The power button is finicky. It requires a long hold to turn on or off, and would frequently turn on in the middle of the night in my dark car, proclaiming to everyone on the block that I had a GPS unit. A sliding switch would have been a better choice.
Lack of voice choices is annoying, and its metre and cadence of the voice was poor, which was especially bad for highways. An example being “Business I-85 south/I-40 west/US 29 south/Winston-Salem/Charlotte” would be pronounced as if it were one long word “BusinessInterstateEightyFIVEsouthInterstateForTYwestUSTwENTYnineSouthWINstonSalemCharlotte” with a slightly robotic sound, highlighted by odd stresses (in all-caps), which was difficult to understand.
There are some good things:
The screen was very responsive and was very easy to enter destinations.
Offers data like elevation, compass, and current location (lat/lon and city/state/zip (postal code)), which is nice for data geeks.
But as it goes sometimes with products, I bought one, wasn’t completely satisfied, then sold it and bought a different, better one. I got a Garmin in November.
Magellan RoadMate 1412 (Refurbished)
I took it out of the box and it never worked. The seller handled everything exceptionally well.
My First GPS
Earlier this year, was on the west coast. my niece has a magellan and we used it to get around and to visit points of interest. very impressed with it. looked over the models and picked this one. enjoying it.
Works great
It has everything i wanted, it’s very simple and easy to use. I couldn’t have gotten a better deal!
Do not purchase a refurbished GPS
I purchased a refurbished item that went on the fritz just 2 days after purchase which tells me that the manufacturer does not test it properly before resale. The new unit I bought works very well. It is a great value for the money and a recommended buy for soemone who just needs to get where they are going and not worried about all the bells and whistles.
refurbished is good
I immediately downloaded the operating system upgrades and purchased the most recent map upgrades. the installation was flawless. The only thing I am missing from a previous model is the “location” function that gives a simulated compass, map coordinates and the altitude. For ease of use and the abiliy to show me where I am and help me get to a destination, I like it.
Got 2nd one like this for my car (1st one went to the wife)
This is second refurbished unit I bought for this exact model. First one I got for my wife at Tigerdirect. This is definitely a bang for a buck, considering the item arrives in practically new condition. The only difficulty I had is mounting it with a suction thingy, but then I realized it was simply too cold, so I wormed it up next to the heater, and then it worked right away.
One thing I’ve noticed – if you go into the tunnel, it switches from map view to step-by-step directions, so you’d be able to navigate on the exit even if its during GPS out of range. My old unit did not do that.
For long range trips, I had to play with settings trying “shortest” and “quickest” distance, but then noticed that “most use of freeways” always works better for long interstate trips.
Voice instructions are loud and clear. Visual instructions are much better then on my first GPS (one of the 1st gen generic units), so I am happy camper all the way@
This unit doesn’t do magic, but it does everything I need. Battery life is moderate, so don’t count on walking with it for hours. Battery is simply a backup, if you turn off your engine, but still want to use it for a bit.
Points of Interests are not up to date (close to 2007 info), and I don’t think they are updatable, however not everyone is using them. I know I don’t (I usually research restaurants through internet, read reviews and such).
So, if you mostly use your GPS to get from Point A to Point B, and like 4.3 wide screen for about $80… This unit is for you!
just works
I works
Pros –
Works
inexpensive
big enough screen for easy usage
It tells the name of street to turn.
cons -
there is a lag between your actual position and your position on the GPS.
instead of going smoothly, your position on the GPS is updated about one frame per second.
Slow POI search, routing calculation.
charging bar behaves weird.
conclution,
This is definatly a good value buy, it’s cheap and it works.
But if you have more money to spent, buy a better one.
Great GPS for the price
Easy to use, I save a LOT of time by not having to mapquest addresses. I am a sales estimator for a roofing company so I travel to several houses/businesses throughout the day. I RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT!!!
product defective, poor customer service
It took four long waiting phone calls and a trip to the post office and fax to convince icare that I had sent the machine back to them. They lost it. Eventually they accepted responsibility and I hope my money will be refunded as promised.
GREAT PRODUCT
REFURBISHED AND I TOOK A CHANCE TO BUY . I HAVE SOME SMALL ISSUES WITH THIS. BUT I CAN MANAGE. PRICE WISE I SAVED QUITE A BIT. A MUST TO HAVE THIS .I USED A GPS IN CALIFORNIA IN 2008 . WE GOT LOST AND OUR G P S TOOK US BACK TO OUR HIGH WAY BY ALL KINDS OF TURNS AND WE WERE ABLE TO SEE THE WIND MILLS IN CALIFORNIA.WE ALL HAVE G P S IN OUR CARS. THIS ONE IS VERY EASY TO PROGRAM AND FRIENDLY.
Solid for basics, but needs updates
The 1412 is a solid, basic, no frills unit. If you want a unit get you where you want to go, without traffic info (in major cities) it is very good. It does have some good features including POI, detour options, multiple destination selection options, trip routing and optimization, and others. This refurbished unit appears to be both mechanically and electrically in very good condition. You have 90 days to determine if refurbishing to electronics is 100%. The only disappointment is the firmware and maps are not the latest version. The firmware download is free, but you need a USB cable (not provided, $15.00 from Magellan) to install it from your PC. The Spring 2009 map update is $79.99 (on line from Magellan); and can be installed only after the firmware is updated to the latest version.
Small glitch buts works well.
Definite interface improvement over the previous models, but this refurbished unit freezes if I ask it to calculate a route without having fixed its position. If I wait until it’s done, it works just fine – which is to say incredibly well.
Magellan roadmate 1412 factory refurbished
I purchased the refurbished roadmate 1412 and it never turned on. After a few phone calls to tech support they recommended returning the unit. Amazon customer service sent a replacement unit. The second item had the same problem as the first and would not turn on. Don’t recommend it at all. Lots of wasted time with tech support, customer service and repackaging and mailing.
Works fine now and then.
When this refurb sample works it’s a fine navigator. BUT it only works as it should about 1/2 the time. locks, repeatedly jumps to the set up screen when inputting street name
Magellan 1412 GPS
Have only used it once for directions to an unknown place. It was easy to program and worked fine.
I have bought many refurbished electronic items as was this one. I would do it again. [..] the retailer shipped fast and with no problems. All in all a very good experience and good deal.
Only negative is that map hasn’t been upgraded since the 1412 came out a few years ago.Magellan RoadMate 1412 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Would buy another if needed
I bought this for use in rental cars and have taken it on 3 trips.
I can plan out my stops before hand and it has not failed me yet.
