I have a MAC so I would prefer it to be compatible luckily I have an old PC that I can update with. Live Traffic would have been nice.

We have one Magellan and now purchased this one for the other automobile. We feel the Magellan is easy to use and generally accurate. This one is better than the older one because it tells you in audio the street you will be turning onto. The other did not announce the names of the upcoming streets. We feel the Magellan is a good value.

I’m pretty happy with the performance of this GPS unit, save for one category — battery life. On a full charge, the GPS lasted only two hours or so. This was with frequent use — I’m a delivery driver, so I was punching in addresses every 15-20 minutes.

As far as it working as a GPS — no complaints there. The widescreen display is nice, and helps me visualize more of the surrounding area, as I get to use the bigger map. The most useful utilization of the wide screen is a split-screen function. As you approach a turn, the screen splits to show both your current position, and what the oncoming turn will look like. This is particularly helpful on freeway interchanges, where the turns aren’t always run-of-the-mill 90 degree numbers. I also appreciate the GPS reminding you to “keep left” or “keep right,” as a previous GPS I’d used didn’t. Also helpful is its little chime reminding you of upcoming turns.

I didn’t know this wasn’t always standard on a GPS, but it does say street names.

The POI file seems adequate, although I can’t really comment there as I haven’t had to rely on it too much. It has all the obvious POI such as major chains and business and such, but not some of the less obvious such as local businesses.

This is a big negative for me — it’s not Mac-compatible, so I have to wait to find a PC to update the firmware/maps. This, along with the obvious gigantic negative of weak battery life. Also a little annoying is this little quirk about the car power adapter: the plug end that fits into the GPS itself points towards the window, rather than the cabin, so the cord has to make an extra loop if you’re using it.

The windshield holder leaves a little to be desired too. It adjusts using a tooth-gear and a thumbscrew, meaning you’re stuck with the angles that it comes with. Quite a bummer having used a holder with a balljoint adjustment. The holder is awfully large as well.

I’ve had this for about six months now, and have used it on several road trips.

    Pros:

Acquires satellites pretty quickly. I find that it does it a lot quicker if you turn the unit on where you last turned it off.

Clear screen, clear directions, great, loud voice commands

    Pretty easy to use

    Cons:

POI database is not that good. For example, if you look up police stations in my area, you get only courts.

It came with a map that was 2 years old. You can upgrade for “free,” with a $10 shipping charge. I paid the price, and quickly received the latest update, which was about six months old. If I were buying this, I’d expect to pay $10 for the upgrade.

Not Mac compatible for firmware updates.

    Overall, it’s pretty good.

Bought this Aug. 2008. Used just a few times. Now the battery can not be charged. This is a bed product.

Simple, reliable GPS. Data is up to date, even on new developments, POIs are good, shows brand/symbols for easy recognition. Easy to startup, very intuitive controls & interface. Great buy & value for $100, can’t beat it.

It has shown me new ways to get around without having to rely on congested highways. I like this part best!

I bought this GPS after seeing it reviewed in my local newspapers tech report. I used it the first time driving thru downtown San Francisco to Golden Gate Park on surface roads. The signal reception was exelent. The voice directions gave me plenty of notice before a turn. Even when the road was blocked for an event and I had to turn the opposite direction, it gave me new directions to my destination within 2 blocks of my detour.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with this product.

This is not our purchase of Magellan Roadmate 1412. We already have two and we bought these because of the excellent price at Amazon and to be given away as gifts. The Roadmate 1412 is a no nonsense GPS with not too many bells and whistles. When first turned on, it requires a good 5 minutes before it communicates with the satellites and knows the current location. However if placed in the front dash or attached to the windshield, it is much, much quicker. After that it is pretty much fine. Sometimes it seems it routes you through so many side streets just to get you in front of the destination so that you don’t have to cross the street. Overall though, it is a good unit with clear audio and video. The user settings are easy to set up. Sometimes when we seem lost on our own, this GPS will bring us safely home! It is also good in finding alternate routes when the freeways are clogged. It does not tell the traffic conditions at a given time and I am not sure if the unit supports this feature even if you buy a subscription for it.

I had had a Magellan before so I was very familiar with using it. The face is a little larger than the previous GPS I had but that’s what I liked about it. It gives clear directions and lets you know ahead of time of an upcoming turn then as you get closer, it tells you to prepare to turn. The maps were clear and it has the number of miles to your destination and the expected arrival time. It was very easy to use. My only minor problem was that it did not come with an AC adapter so I could recharge my unit in the house before using.I would recommend to anyone.

I enjoyed this little GPS. It was easy to assemble, easy to operate and very reliable. I kept it in my vehicle. When I went on a recent road trip, however, the GPS wouldn’t start up. I’ve tried charging it but it just remains a blank, dark screen. Bummer.

The GPS is good, but I received an error when I tried put other map.

To preface, I never abused any of the units I owned, never left them in the car to experience extreme temperatures, and always handled them carefully.

I purchased my first Magellan Roadmate 1412 at Costco in 2008, and despite being straight out of the package, the unit would not charge. I brought it back and received a replacement: unit number 2.

The GPS initially worked, despite buggy screen problems, until a few months later when the unit failed to charge again. When resetting the unit didn’t work, I called customer assistance who sent a replacement charger cable in case that was the issue. The unit still failed to power up so I sent it in to be serviced. The unit came back, worked for a month, then failed to charge again. I called to complain and was told to send in the unit for a complete replacement, and received my 3rd Roadmate 1412 unit.

I thought I finally had a good unit since there were no problems with it at first, until the unit once again failed to charge. Unfortunately by the time this unit broke, it was no longer under warranty, since replacements do not come with a new one year coverage term.

Before you buy, you may want to know that map updates are available (if necessary) for free during the first 30 days after purchase. After that, map updates are $75, which seems high. That is almost the current cost of the GPS new. I had to update it as soon as I bought it and customer service was excellent. They sent me a SD card with the update and I received it 4 days after I called.

To do the update, you have to update the firmware first. If not, the update will not work and you will need help. You update it by downloading the firmware update file from their web site, then connect the GPS to your USB port and withing a few minutes, it is done. You can do that before you get the SD map update. When you get the SD card, just insert it, push the reset button, and you are updated.

I does a good job of receiving the GPS signals and does an OK job of selecting routes. It does not have a lot of the bells and whistles of some other GPS systems, but it seems to be reliable and works well for the price.

I was just wondering if this will work outdoors, in the wilderness. If it can track rivers, lakes and bays? We were caught out in a snow storm/white out and it would be helpful to have a gps.

This GPS has a 300MHz ARM CPU and 51MB memory. It is enough for using almost all customization (unlocks). MioPocket 3.0 works well with it, although some program doesn’t run. It has a persistant registry by which you don’t have to reinstall MioPocket every time your hard reset. The best of it, it can run iGo and iGo Amigo nicely without any problem. In sum, it can be converted into a reasonably good PNA. It would have been perfect if it had a plug for headphone.

Nice product, but it does have some wrong maps, led my husband to a deadend road and took us to a residentual area when we were looking for a resturant, but still good for the money
