I purchased the Magellan RoadMate 2000, my first and only GPS system, at least 2 years ago and could not ask for a better product. We pull a trailer all around the country 5-6 months a year. As we travel so much I used to have multiple hard copy maps and LapTop map systems to lead us around the country. Within 3 months of getting the Magellan RoadMate 2000 I stored the hard copy maps and have not used them since. In another month I stopped using the LapTop systems (which are also GPS); it is now a backup for the just in case we get really lost; have not used it for over a year.

Now I just plug the address of our next destination into the Magellan RoadMate 2000 and off we go, no maps are ever opened. We’ve driven over 30,000 miles and only on one occasion did it let us down; it had an address 1 block east of where it actually was – this had us screwed up for a while. Our backup LapTop system didn’t help us out in this case.

We don’t use point of interests we just drive point A to point B.

I’ve gotten so lazy that I don’t even pay attention when traveling around new areas as I know the RoadMate will always lead us back to our trailer no matter where we are in the US.

Every time we enter a new area I am amazed that the RoadMate does such a great job.

Last year I decided to but my wife a GPS for her car. This isn’t my first GPS. I already have an automotive one in my car, multiple hand held units along with older units datting back to 1992. I also use one on a daily basis Geocaching.

    About the GPS:

Pros: Touch screen and easy to use with clear instructions.

Cons: It’s size is a little larger then most of todays units. The cradle isn’t very solid. The battery in the unit went down hill from day 1. Only 6 months after installation and very little use the power connection inside the unit just died. The GPS was treated very well and it just died. It now sits all by itself on the shelf waiting for me to repair it or thrown into the electronics recycle pile. I would not purchase one of these units due to the power and battery issue.

I’ve had the Magellan Roadmate 2000 for about 3 years. As far as working its not bad. It takes getting used to and sometimes it routes me ways I know are wrong. If your returning from a route you just had in the unit. It sometimes takes you in a completely different way home. The thing that galls me the most is I’ve waited for a map update for the last two years. Now that they have one they want 79.00 plus shipping to ship me a CD to update. I don’t expect free updates forever, but give me one! I can buy a refurbished Magellan 2000 or a tom tom for the same money as the update.I will not buy another magellan product period.

Magellan Customer service is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. They offer a free 30 day map update since all of their products ship with out of date maps. This would be a good thing except it is in the fine print of their products and their customer support email address that their website list is the wrong address. I had to get through to their customer service by posting a bad review on their website. By the time they responded my unit was beyond the 30 day limit and they refused to give me the update. This is a bad business practice. Garmin has a 60 day guarantee which is posted directly on their website in plain view.

We’ve had this GPS for over a year now, and it has worked quite well. We used it on our move from New York to Texas and it held a signal the whole trip which was what we hoped for. I’ve been using it in our new city and its predominantly been a champ. This area has a number of new constructions so the maps seem outdated (mainly missing developments) and it appears you can’t update them. It seems to spontaneously reset when I hit one particular spot downtown- its annoying, but at least I know exactly when its going to happen so I can look at my next few turns before that happens.

Overall, this is a great little unit if you’re new in town and want a GPS to help you get where you need to go until you know how to get there on your own.

I got this GPS as a present about a year and a half ago. It is not the best GPS you will find, but if you want a small, inexpensive unit, this is a good product to look at for the price. Here are some pros and cons:

    Pros:

    1. Reliability

The unit will get you from point A to point B. I have seen it re-route after a wrong turn and it will usually (eventually) find an alternate route that is suitable.

    2. Ease of use

The unit is very easy to use, and the interface is pretty good. I just bought a Garmin and the huge disadvantage to that unit is that I cannot search locations by zip code. With this unit, you can search by zip or by city name. I also like the “Home” button right on the main menu. Touch the button it will route to your home without having to go through multiple menus. Also, it has many POIs and they are easy to use.

    3. Routing options

Another nice feature is the routing options you are presented with every time you enter an address. Before it plans the route you can pick “Shortest Time”, “Shortest Distance”, “Most use of freeways”, or “Least use of freeways”. This is especially nice when driving home in rush hour traffic when you want to avoid the highways, or making long trips where you want to use all freeways. Also, you can click “Avoid toll roads” for any of these options, which is great is you don’t have an EZ Pass-type device.

    Cons:

    1. Routing & maps

The unit has always gotten me to where I need to go, but sometimes it doesn’t calculate the fastest route. Also, Magellan doesn’t update maps very often so sometimes you might run into a situation where a road has changed and the map is not updated. Another con to this is that the unit does not save your favorite route to stored locations.

    2. Not many extra features

The unit is basically for GPS only. It doesn’t have any of the fancy features the GPS units have now, such as Bluetooth, MP3 players, etc. It is meant to be used as a GPS only. It also does not have text-to-speech capabilities, meaning it will not announce road names, but instead say “turn left in 1 mile.”

All in all, this is a good little GPS unit for someone who just need to get where they are going. There are no flashy features in it, but it gets you to where you need to go. I especially like being able to touch the one button during a route and look at all the turns for the route from start to finish. The routing is pretty good and the time estimates are almost always dead on. It’s not bad for a first GPS.

I’ve owned this GPS for almost a year, My unit takes about 7 minutes to connect to the satalite and get a location fix, after its initially turned on. The Points of Interest database is useless. It barely has anything in it compared to most other gps units (2 million vs. 6 million). 2 million may sound like alot, but its not, its really only like 20% of stores/gas stations/ resteraunts/ etc. Magellan just sent me an email about a map, software, and points of interest update, that they just released. They charge $79.99 for the update. Great way to retain customers Magellan, charge them for updates! The battery on the Roadmate is trash. The unit does not have an off mode, only hibernate, which consistantly drains the battery dead, if left “off” for more than a few days. So basically the unit must remain plugged in constantly like it has no battery at all. The user interface is poorly thought out. If for instance I want to store a new location then navigate to it. I must store the location and name it, then navigate all the way back to the home screen (by pushing “X” five times. Then all the back to the save points list, then I have to locate my new point I just saved on a long list that only shows about 8 points per screen, so you have to scroll down and find it. It should be just be you punch in an address and click navigate, but its not. Oh and another minor anoyance with the roadmate, is that you cannot see the map and your speed at the same time, on the same display. You have to click the top bar to see your speed. Then hit “X” to get back to you map. Also zooming in and out is excruciatingly slow.

I’ve had this product since Dec. 2006 (paid $225 for it at the time). It has worked great: got me where I needed to go, provided me with the nearest Taco Bells, suggested alternate routes when it detects that I’m stuck in traffic, and etc.

However, it only comes with a one year warranty. Low and behold, after 14 months of service (not much since I don’t drive everyday and only use it for the occasional trip), it decided to die on me this month. I can send it back to Magellan for repair but that’ll cost more than a new GPS. I don’t think I’ll go Magellan again.

I had a Garmin C330 stolen so I bought this one. Harder to use, maps are not up to date. Highlight of use – I am heading to a restaurant, driving 60 mph in the middle of the freeway when i hear the “YOU HAVE ARRIVED” noise…That’s when I realized that I made a subpar choice.

Ok wow bad reviews!!!. I have used this unit for 6 months in 6 states. I love it. It has been correct most all of the time. I found the highway exit information a little out of date. It might list only some of the gas stations and restaurants even still it provided useful information. i work in field service and use this device to find my customers. I would say it locates them 99% of the time. The database seems as accurate as mapquest. If mapquest doesnt show it the GPS probably wont either. I thought the maps were upgradeable, now im a bit scared about doing that after reading these posts. For $199 i think its a great deal.

I received a Magellan Roadmate 2 years ago, the unit suggested I update the maps, the maps are now seriously out of date. Tech support said they have no updated maps for such an “OLD” unit. They offered a discount on buying a new unit which would have been more expensive than a competitor’s new unit. I WILL NEVER BUY MAGELLAN AGAIN

  15. by L. Foster

It’s a pretty basic GPS unit. The menus are few and easy and the touch screen is nice. The voice is not annoying. However, I wish it would give more choices when selecting a POI. If I choose “McDonalds”, there may be five in town and I would like to be able to select which McDonalds I want to go to, rather than it selecting it for me.

My biggest gripe is the AC adapter that shipped with my unit does not work – it must be powered from the car adapter. I would suggest setting the ‘auto power off’ to something other than the default ‘never’. Otherwise the unit will drain itself while “sleeping” until you get it plugged in again.

This unit never turned on or worked and I made the mistake of trying to address this through Magellan instead of the retailer b/c I wanted to save on shipping. My husband called Magellan on Oct 15, was on the phone for 20 minutes + and was told that if he sent in the unit, they would repair it; he responded, why should I end up with a refurbished unit when I bought it new? After much waiting on hold, he was asked for his credit card # and was told they would ship a unit and then he could return the old unit. Weeks passed, he called again and was assured it would ship soon, but that there was a small delay.

Now it has been five weeks, and he called again this week on Nov 22. They had no record of the transaction # or his credit card info and he spent another 20 minutes on hold with someone in India. He finally hung up and called back and asked to speak to someone in the US. They don’t have anyone. He was again asked for his credit card info and assured that they would ship it soon, and that we would even be “upgraded” to a new model.

We are so frustrated and my husband said we should just throw this away (and we DON’T have money to throw away!) … it has been a nightmare since it never would turn on and then the waiting on hold for promises that customer service never delivered on and waiting for a new unit. Please don’t buy this as a gift for someone, they might never forgive you.

Before you make your purchase, pick up the phone and call customer support. You will find it is in India and it is worthless. They will lie to you about shipments you have been promised, know nothing of the products and are completely useless. To test this report, I challenge you to try to find anyone in the USA to speak to. Every phone number is routed to India as if there is no US presence at all. DO NOT waste your money. Buy anything but a Magellan. Call (909)394-500 to verify that what I am telling you is true.

I have no idea how I survived without this. Gone are the days of printing maps before I get in the car! It’s great to arrive in a new city and have no doubt that you will get from point A to point B. It lacks a lot of the bells and whistles of other GPS units, but for me that is a good thing. I don’t need all of that other junk. I bought mine last spring and just purchased another exactly like it for my Mom.

I’ve only had this for about a week, so I can’t vouch for the long-term quality of this product.

I can, however, say that this is still an excellent GPS system. Granted, It lacks a few of the higher-end features, but so far it has been extremely reliable and quite sturdy. The voice is quite clear and easy to understand, the screen is very bright and colors are vibrant, and the actual GPS lock-on is excellent.

The included accessories are excellent as well. It came with both an AC and a car adapter, and a great quality dashboard and window mount, and a very clear and concise manual.

Bear in mind that since it is inside the vehicle, the metal of the car body plus reflective windows will reduce the GPS signal. It won’t ever be as good as the system that comes built into the car, so if you’re buying a new car and are thinking of getting this, see if you can get one pre-built into the car. The car antenna will make locking onto the signal faster and easier. Still, though, I haven’t had any problem.

    Overall a 5/5 star product.

Pros: Screen, battery life, included accessories, voice, sturdiness, price, ease-of-use while driving.

Cons: A little slow to lock onto the satellite sometimes, somewhat of a long first-use setup.

i HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH THE MAGELLAN ROADMATE 2000. THE FIRST THING I DID WAS PROGRAM MY HOME ADDRESS. TESTING THE UNIT, I FOUND THAT IT MISSED THE TURN-IN TO MY DEVELOPMENT (SOUTH ON US 19 TO CIPRUS AV W).

SECOND, I TRIED TO PROGRAM IN A FRIENDS HOUSE IN TAMPA, FL. THE UNIT COULD NOT LOCATE MY FRIENDS STREET NOR COULD IT LOCATE THE NEAREST CROSS STREET.

THIRD, I PROGRAMED IN THE ADDRESS OF A HOSPITAL (BAYNET POINT, FL). THE UNIT GOT ME TO THE VICINITY OF THE HOSPITAL AND THEN DIRECTED ME TO TURN 90 DEGREES IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. IT WAS TAKING ME INTO THE WOODS!

I WAS ABLE TO GET PROPER DIRECTIONS TO SOME AREAS, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT, TO ME, THE UNIT MISSED.
