The GPS came with no operation manual and the power supply cradle was defective. Lukily I still had the one from my former GPS that was stolen.

I love my magellan 760 roadmate. I have had it for almost three years now and it has never let me down. The screen is easy to read, and the buttons are easy to use. There are so many features on here so you get a lot for the dollar. My only problem is that I have lost my antenna, and I can’t find one anywhere, so I was forced to by an external high performance antenna. I can honestly say that when I have been to a new town that i’m not familiar with my 760 has never let me down. I have had those moments where i didn’t know anything about where i was going and had to rely solely on my 760 and it was a success each and every time. My only drawback is that I wish it had built in traffic link, and bluetooth. Other than those this is a flawless unit.

I brought this navigator a few years back and it still works fine. Function wise, it is OK! My only complaint is the size. Why make it so clumsy? Otherwise, Magellan is a good brand to have.

The unit functions OK but the antenna is not sufficient. An external antenna does the job and I now get a good signal. The cost of the antenna about $20.00 to $24.00 if bought from anyone but Magellan.

The maps are quite bad and the updates are expensive. However, they have come down a bit. Now about $60.00 and from what I understand, the installation is difficult and may result in a dead unit. Sending it for repair, is another cost which I do not know what that would cost. I can buy a new Garmin with a larger screen for about $120.00.

Given this, I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

I’ve owned this Roadmate for almost a year. It is constantly in “thinking” mode and never updates my position quickly enough (sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes) and I’ve only traveled 5 miles from my last destination! I’m about to throw it out since my husband just bought a Garmin Nuvi for his car and it is SO MUCH better. We traveled over 100 miles and it found us within 1 minute. Magellan needs a new product name – maybe Columbus instead!

Why you ask would I say get a Garmin? When you are navigating, there is no speed shown on the screen (big thing I miss), when you come to a turn or a destination, the device will only tell you .1 mile, not XX feet as the Garmin does. Time to destination: the 760 says XX minutes, my last Garmin showed I would arrive at 10:38am or whatever time AND show minutes to destination, but the the WORST thought up blunder of this unit is you can download music MP3 files into the device and connect to your car stereo ala mini headphone jack, BUT YOU CAN’T play the music files AND navigate at the same time, it is one OR the other. That is just BAD design IMHO. I am unloading mine ASAP , and going to repurchase a Garmin, and hope that the scumbag that stole my Garmin from my truck get Ricketts, Herpes, Malaria and any other plague he/she runs into.

i am overall satisfied with this product

compared to the other GPS available at that time in the market

    here are the positives

    1- extremely accurate directions

2- powerful reception even in busy downtown buildings

3- lots of very useful features that you really need and not the fancy features others like GARMIN offer

4- loud and very clear voice guidance

    5- large and clear display

6 – light changing easy to ready display in any light conditions

    7 – excellent re-routing and quick

    8- good customer care

    now the BAD features

1 – no battery backup poweer, so will shutdown asap if the power cord is shaken and takes time to restart and so always need to be plugged in

    2 – huge and bulky

3 – not good window mounting

4 – cradle very sensible to damage and so loose contacts

5 – some of the POI’s were not update, but overall POI were fine

The RoadMate gets the job done. It isn’t the sleekest or smallest GPS but it will get you from A to B, at a very affordable price. The only issue I have faced with the RoadMate so far, is the cost of map updates (around $50.00), but I haven’t needed it yet.

I purchased this GPS approximately two years ago and have had to replace the 12V electrical cord and the back plane mount device already. I use the device while on vacation. Total times used while on maybe three dozen times. The external electrical connections are not very rugged. I had to hard wire the antenna as the fold down unit did not reliably maintain satellite connections. Think twice before purchasing…. only at a severe discount.

Magellan Customer service is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. They offer a free 30 day map update since all of their products ship with out of date maps. This would be a good thing except it is in the fine print of their products and their customer support email address that their website list is the wrong address. I had to get through to their customer service by posting a bad review on their website. By the time they responded my unit was beyond the 30 day limit and they refused to give me the update. This is a bad business practice. Garmin has a 60 day guarantee which is posted directly on their website in plain view.

This is an old unit. It’s big. The operating system is slow. It will freeze every once in a while. Magellan is TERRIBLE about their map updating. Magellan has TERRIBLE offshore customer support. I don’t care if customer service is off shore, but let me talk to somebody who is empowered to solve my problems.

But even with it’s old school computer voice, and now 2 year old maps… it works and it’s better than not having a GPS.

However, in 2008… get a Garmin.

Big, bulky, but not terrible. Unfortunately when I called the Customer Service people to say that all of the sudden, for no apparent reason it just doesn’t work any longer, they said, “sorry, but there’s nothing we can do.”

I liked some of the features, but, man, if the thing doesn’t work, I’m stuck.

So- I bought a Tom-Tom One from RadioShack for $150. What a deal, and way better than the RoadMate.

Tons of POI and smart. Very intuitive about traffic and traffic patterns, where the slow traffic is and during what times.

The RoadMate 760 works as expected except for a couple problems. You can’t use a MAC to update the maps, only a Windows PC. Also, if you attach it to the windshield with the suction cup (as directed) on a bright, hot sunny day it will overheat and shut down until it cools off.

did not like this product. takes time to calculate the position during start up. In today’s world, it might be worthwhile investing products like Iphone instead of a navigator

    PROS

    * Best user interface of all consumer GPS units made. This is a GPS your parents can use without even reading the instruction manual.

    * Improved antenna reception and map tracking performance over previous Magellan Roadmate’s.

    * Huge map database contains even the most remote roads.

    * Massive Points of Interest database contains millions of shops, restaurants, banks, gas stations, tourist attractions, parking garages, etc.

    * Quick-release mounting bracket makes it easy to stow the GPS without having to dismantle the windshield mount or power cord.

    CONS

    * Default settings leave most new features disabled (street name announce, auto power off, auto volume leveling).

    * Default shipped setting shows all business POI’s, making the map confusing

    * Automatic volume leveling doesn’t work well (volume seems to jump in large volume increments rather than subtle leveling adjustments)

    * Sometimes long highway names don’t fit on the screen, and the unit truncates the words, making it difficult to identify the correct exit you should take.

    * Screen can be hard to read on bright sunny days

    * Horrible windscreen mount unit jiggles around when you drive

    * Poor speaker quality (slight background static when voice prompts are announced)

    * Text entry can be sluggish (unit does not respond fast enough when trying to select options on the screen, or spell destinations, or cancel a current route).

    * Many POI’s are mis-catagorized.

    * At highway interchanges, sometimes voice prompts are confusing. For example, “keep to the left”, when it really should say “continue on i-80″

    * Occasional mapping oddities: For example, if you want to drive to a location in Manhattan, you must be careful not to select “New York” as the city, but rather “New York {town of}”

    SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

    * In my car, the cigarette lighter adapter is barely long enough to reach the windshield. Unit would benefit from a longer power cord.

    * Although the maneuvering list view displays exit numbers, the main view does not. Exit numbers are more useful than the exit name, yet the main display does not usually show the exit number.

    * Would be nice if it showed the posted speed limit (particularly useful on long trips).

    * A mute button would be a welcome addition. Frequently you want to momentarily silence the Roadmate (during a cell phone call, or during conversation with another passenger in the car).

    * I would really like to see Magellan manufacture a high performance external antenna. In my testing, there was virtually no difference between the included internal antenna and the optional external antenna.

    * The addition of dead-reckoning would be very helpful for driving in dense urban environments.

    * A “remember this route” feature would be nice for storing a specific way to get somewhere. This is particularly useful when someone wants to show you a “shortcut”.

    CONCLUSIONS

Magellan has been making automotive navigation systems for years, and their experience shows. The Roadmate enjoys the same mature user interface that made the NeverLost system so successful in the Hertz rental fleet. With the Roadmate 760, Magellan strikes the right balance between feature set and ease of use. In our testing, the Roadmate 760 performed very well, beating out competitors Garmin and TomTom. With a few minor improvements, the Roadmate could be a hands-down winner in the increasingly competitive market space of personal GPS devices.

Very good unit, but no software included and unable to find,

    seller does not respond

I bought qty 2 of Magellan RoadMate 760 when they first came out thinking I am investing in a quality product and I was getting a really nice discount for purchasing 2 at a time. If only I waited for a few more months when Garmin or TomTom came out. This product is always taking us in the longer routes and wakes up @ or after the turn has passed. On top of that the company charges you a lot of money to update your software/maps. My 2 cents go with Garmin or TomTom. I just bought a Garmin for my brother.

bought the unit and had old maps. Bought $79 upgrade maps that erased all the data from my GPS then refused to copy the new data. Spent 3 days AFTER given a “case” number. Told that I was to get a “free” maestro replacement the first time, put on hold and disconnected the second time, tried to tell me the unit needed to be “repaired” the third time and have been on the phone for 1:30. Was told for the 5th time that “we’ll get right back to you”.

So now I had an out of date GPS that was working and now I have a lump of hard plastic that lights up and doesn’t work. NEVER buy a Magellan if you expect customer service. Buy one only if it’s a one time purchase that you can throw away and not look back.

You have to bay 79.99 for map update.

Many other gps offer for free.
