I am warning you all who is thinking about getting any Motorola product. I was a loyal customer of Motorola for years till I get this junk. I got this for under $70 and I still think that is too much for this device. Shame on Motorola and other customer reviews that rated this product more than one star(zero would be much better). I should have listen the critics. BIG MISTAKE. There is more help and support for PC mouse out there…than for this junk.

I bought this gps on the internet.the maps were out of date when purchased.the motorola web site does not even list a tn30 update. the print is very small on the screen. hard to see. I have a garmin nuvi with a 3.5 screen. I thought the bigger screen on the motorola would be easyer to read. it is not! I like the feature that it speaks street names; my garmin does not. Buy a gps that speaks street names and map updates are readly available.

I purchased this as an impulse buy at Radio Shack in Cambridge MA. I’ve been using a Garmin Street Pilot I3 for 2 years. My eyes are just getting too bad and I needed a bigger screen. I don’t pay retail for GPS’s. The refurbs and closeouts are just too good. Enter the TN30 at Radio Shack for $70. Great screen, built in Bluetooth for your cell phone that works great…don’t care about map updates…most are too expensive anyway. Just throw it away in three years and buy another closeout model. Seems to know the Boston area pretty well. Fits easily into my bag. Had to rate it 5 stars at this price point.

As much as I like this product, I must let you all potential buyers know that it is a mistake to buy it.

I bought one in Dec 2008 and now it is broken, less than a year of use. There is an error about “Bluetooth connection failure” beyond which you could not progress despite resetting and all.

Worse still, there is no support by motorola for this procuct. I have spent countless hours online trying to get some answer but there is absolutely none that has to do with possible errors.

In addition, there is no way to reload or update your software or maps.

It is a shame, this is the worst supported device I have ever had and that tells me that unless its a phone stay away from motorola produts.

I wish there was enough review out there before I wasted my money buying this junk.

This GPS navigation is the best system that my wife and I have own yet. I feel it is a major improvement in navigation technology. My basis for comparison are the several makes and models that my wife and I have owned through the past several years.

The voice direction are nice and clear, the screen is easy-to-read (in almost light conditions), the startup quicky aquires satelites, and the turns are given in a timely manner. The nearby feature (e.g., gas stations, shopping, etc) works well. The Bluetooth calling works seamlessly with my Motorola cellphone.

Bottomline, I would buy again and definitely recommend to others.

Have had it for 2 weeks and so far, it’s great! Its touch screen is nice and easy to use; it has a lot of features, including being able to sync to over 200 phones for the Bluetooth wireless; although the max volume could be a little louder. Overall, this is a great GPS for an affordable price (if on sale).

I tried to upgrade the maps for a friend. Put wrong date by accident (year) on their website and it locked us out. Took me three days to get to talk to an agent in the support and all they offered is to send them the device so they do the update. I could not believe. And the date we put by accident (by the way their website offer default 2007) was before the device even showed on the market.

DO NOT BUY THIS. BAD SUPPORT. BAD TREATMENT OF CUSTOMERS. SAD FOR MOTOROLA WHO I BELEVIED BEFORE WAS A VERY REPUTABLE COMPANY!!!!

Wish there was zero stars on this review.

I received the TN30 as a gift in December 2008. I actually like how the unit works but there is slight learning curve to using it. I had to update the software and it works fine. Motorola did not let me know about the update, I just started poking around their support web site and found it. The maps are dated. Mine are from 2007! I called Motorola this January 2010 and there still are no updates! How can this be! When pressed on the issue, Motorola would only merely state that there were no updates at this time. No indication of when they I could expect them and not even an offer to alert me when the updates are available. They simply told me to keep checking their web site to see when the maps are available. It’s a shame that Motorola is doing business this way. I do not recommend anyone to purchase this product.

Interesting little GPS unit. Motorola does not appear to spend much money marketing it, and it doesn’t appear in anyone’s list of commonly purchased devices. A blistering review from CNET, the only one that I can find (a sad commentary in itself) probably doomed its market share.

What the CNET review did say is that it was buggy, and that the software malfunctioned and required a reset frequently. If you would expect Motorola to be all over this issue, to come up with a fix, to inform the customer and prospective customers about it – you would be wrong. Nothing about it on the Motorola website at all, and the website itself is incomplete, and completely geared towards Motorola’s cellphone market.

In fact there has been a software update, but no way to know how many and when they were released. And it is not easy to install this update if you are not a techie. But it does appear to work, and the problems that CNET describes were not apparent.

What sets this GPS apart from others?

      - Nice wide screen, with easy to read display

      - Very nice graphics – seems like higher resolution and more elegant than other interfaces.

      - Nice looking case, nice mount which is easy to manipulate

      - Text to voice appears to work well, thought I usually mute mine.

      - Fast to grab the satellite, fast to calculate a route, accurate routing

      - Big deal!: Takes the time from the satellite signal, and automatically sets day or night view based on the time and date. (my tom tom has a manual clock, and you have to do the day/night thing yourself)

      - Power on and off automatically with the power supply

      - Bluetooth works great, and signal is clear.

      - great feature where you can click on any point on the map, say “take me there” or “save this address”

      - maps seem up to date

      Weaknesses:

      - After you install the new software, it will no longer store your home address. No way to fix, nothing on the website about this, customer support is useless. Confirmed this error on 2 separate devices.

      - Cannot store favorite phone numbers

      - Cannot see time, arrival time, speed at the same time.

      - no PC software, updates hard to install

      - Appears that Motorola just doesn’t care enough about this product.

Overall, a surprisingly good GPS unit. 4 stars.

Borrowed this from a friend…otherwise it would be back in the box and going back to the store. We knew our route, but the GPS kept insisting that we turn around for the first 4 hours of our trip. The arrival time was 9 hours too late from the beginning, and never changed until I reset the route. GPS couldn’t find a signal, though I was in a major metropolitan area. Finally, the GPS got a mind of it’s own and thought we were 13 miles into our return trip, though we were sitting in a driveway. It froze like that and had to be manually reset 12 times before it would unfreeze. It still couldn’t find a GPS signal. Good thing I had maps in the car, as we really needed the unit for the return trip, but it wouldn’t work. Very disappointed, but am finding that in most Motorola products these days.

I have had 2-3 other GPS units for my SUV over the years such as Garmin, and Megellan. I believe this one works as well as the other units in terms of showing your position on the map, re-calculating your route and general information on the screen. Searching for location and displaying POI’s is on par with similiar GPS systems. Where the TN30 is better than the other units is it offers Bluetooth hands free calling on my cell phone. The unit paired right up with my phone and the sound is loud and clear. The other nice feature is the spoken street names. I really like knowing the exact street to turn on when in a new or unfamiliar location. I can glance at the street sign an know for sure this is my turn. I would have given it five stars but Motorola does not have a map update for their GPS units at this time and mine came the NavTeq maps from the first quarter of 2008 (NT 2008.Q1). You can find other units with newer maps or map updates from the manufacturer. With no updates available yet it makes me wonder the commitment of Motorola in the GPS market. Map issues aside, overall I am very happy with the product.

OK, first off I am not a Motorola employee or any ways associate with Motorola. I bough this GPS from W****rt for a trip for $ 160, knowing that it does not have good reviews around the internet. I also planned to return it if it give me any problems on my trip. I have owned several previously, Garmin, Mio, even a Harman Kardon. I also used a naviagation system in a Lexus.

What a surpise. The unit locked on sattelite signals in less than 10 seconds and so easy to use. One hick up: it lost the route (I had to reprogram it) after I deliberately made several turns. After that, it performed flawlessly. It did picked the shortest route to my destination. Text to speech was clear and it announced all names for a road (FM xxx, xxx blvd, state highway XXX). Whenever possible, it even displayed the speed limit! It started telling to turn 1 mile before, half mile, 0.2 mile then at the intersection. This GPS unit is very accurate, I checked it several times when I crossed the intersections and it was always right on it. And I could find several restaurans on my trip just fine.

I will test the bluetooth function next, but navigation was the most important thing and this unit passed with flying color.

I have no idea why it received such a bad rap. Whoever gave it negative marks must not know how to use the thing. I liked it a lot more than my old Garmin 370. Its 4.3″ screen is clear and wide and displayed a lot more map details. Especially the low price of $ 160 for a device with so many features.

      PROS:

      - Great Sticky Suction cup for the window.

      - Sleek design.

      CONS:

      - Ignores jughandles (this is New Jersey’s PRIMARY way of making turns)

      - Gargled speech

      - Unable to update software

      - Software had many bugs

I picked this up because it seems to have all the features you’d want in a GPS. But it turns out the unit is full of bugs, ignores streets and jughandles and wants to take you WAAAAAAAAY out of the way to get to places. Sorry Motorola, stick to phones and walkie talkies….

The Motorola TN30 is the best Portable GPS Navigator I have ever used. The battery last a really long time when its not on the charger. The bluetooth is perfect to use. The screen is very clear 4.3 inch. The turn by turn voice is load and clear or you can adjust it to a lower sound level. The touch screen works accurately and easy. The TN30 displays free way speeds and your speed. The TN30 will give you altitude levels you are driving in. The maps are perfectly accurate, and easy to see. The settings are easy to understand. The motorola TN30 is the best.

    15. by Dr. Dale E. Wittmer

Would not let me change rating. The monitor is difficult to see in regular lighting and you can not change the contrast to be able to see the screen during the day. It works well at night as the night display is clear. The handsfree blue tooth works flawlessly but the sound is terrible for a Motorola phone company product. I sent the unit back and got a full refund. I would give this 1 star.
