Navigon no longer in U.S.
Please note that if you buy anything Navigon, you will be on your own. Navigon has abandoned the U.S. market and no longer has phone tech support. As for warranty support, I don’t know, but I feel I can safely say the same because you have to contact them via their website for anything. I’ve written several e-mails via their website in a 2 month period and never got a response. It’s too bad because their units are nice. If you want a nav unit, go with Garmin because they have a solid presence in the U.S. I can’t say I recommend TomTom because I had a unit and had several problems with their software that never got resolved. Do they still have problems ? I don’t know, but I’m not willing to try another unit to find out. I’ve been to Best Buy to look at Garmin and the rep stated it was definitely the best.
Im sold on GPS
I never really thought I needed a GPS, especially when I needed to justify spending money for such a device. After getting this GPS, I’m sold. I haven’t had much experience with other GPS devices but this one seems to be top of the line. Its easy to use for a beginner. My girlfriend has one from another brand that I have used and it isn’t nearly as good as this one.
This thing is so helpful. I love how accurate the maps are and how accurate each turn is. It always knows exactly where I need to turn and tells me so that there’s no confusion. A lot of times there are 2 roads close together and I may be unsure which one to take, especially if I used my girlfriend’s GPS. This Navigon always makes it clear which one I need to take. The same goes for on the highway and which exit and even which lane to be in as you pass merging highways! I was on a recently renamed highway and even though the highway name was incorrect, every turn and lane change was still exact and got me to my destination with ease. It also helped me change lanes to switch between highways over a congested bridge just by listening to it. There was way too much to watch for so I couldn’t look at the GPS. So it was very helpful that the GPS and voice were so accurate.
I highly recommend this Navigon and would do so to my family and friends.
Beware, Navigon has left the GPS business, and their customers
I bought my Navigon a little over a year ago. It’s performance has been mixed, in line with much of the reviews here, but I’ve generally been happy with it.
However, I can unequivocally state that you should NOT buy this product. Navigon has abruptly left the North American market, leaving customers, even those who purchased a device and map updates within the year, almost completely without support. If you buy one of these, you’re buying a dead device with no hope of updates.
navi
Piece of junk. It broke 3 times and now they won’t fix it. NOt a good model. Cheaply built. Spend the money and get the more expensive one. That’s what I did.
GPS reliabability
We purchased this GPS unit based on reviews and price. But we were not impressed when put to the road test. The route it took us to get to the turnpike was complicated and confusing. Plugging in new destinations or different trip parameters seemed equally complicated. On the whole, this GPS did not seem to be at all intuitive in its use as compared to a Garmin I had previously. It got to the point that I wanted to consult an old fashioned map before relying on the GPS directions. I would not recommend this model to anyone.
OK for a 1st GPS, but support is terrible
I purchased a Navigon 2000s from […[ about 5 months ago, for about $100. I knew I was buying an entry-level device, with a cheap price. It has some really nice features: turn-by-turn audible instructions with street and road names; lane instructions. With the right option turned on, it will warn you when you exceed the speed limits (assuming it has the right speed limit), but this gets annoying if you go through a lot of school zones, because it will yell “caution” if you are going faster than the conditional speed limit of the school zone.
It lacks some features, too. When it picks a route you know is not where you want to go, it is not easy to force it to use the route you want. You have to pick an arbitrary intermediate stop. You can look at a map and pick a location to add to the route, instead of using an address, but it is not intuitive or direct. You must save your current route plan, exit route planning, and display the map, which starts by showing the entire U.S. After zooming in by pressing the + many times or dragging a rectangle around the area you want to zoom to, find the location and add to your locations list. Then go back to your route plan (which you saved or start a new one) and add your new location and re-order your stops to get the right sequence.
What I didn’t know is that the maps were out-of-date and an update of the maps is NOT included with the purchase from TigerDirect. The update for the map data for this device is $80, so to get this device with the current maps is $180… not so cheap!!! For a little more, I could have had a Garmin with a wide screen (and at least the initial updates to bring the device up-to-date).
Next item I discovered is that although the maps were out-of-date, they were also the most-current maps available. I found myself being told to turn right onto a one-way street to go around the block to arrive at a location 3 doors up the street to the left… but it is NOW a two-way street and has been for two years.
I found several Interstate highways in the MO, AR, LA, TN, MS, and AL area with significant errors. At one interchange in MS, I was directed to take an exit, then the on-ramp, for no apparent reason.
The Points-of-Interest are unreliable for major fast-food chains. I was directed to a Subway Restaurant which was not there and, when I inquired about it locally, I was told it had been gone for 5 years.
My most-recent issue is that I discovered that there is an update to the software on the 2000s. I attempted to load it and received a series of cryptic errors, such as “the directory is corrupted”, when trying to back up the device (with no indication as to the identity or location of the corrupted directory), and “undefined”, when trying to download and update the device. There does not appear to be any information to help with this.
I would NOT recommend purchase of this device, unless you want to experiment with GPS before buying a real one or are looking for a nifty-looking paper-weight.
Great interface, low-end price, high-end feature
Had bought a refurbished item from Amazon. It took forever to acquire the GPS signal. I returned it to Amazon & exchanged for another refurbished item no question asked, no postage needed (thanks for Amazon’s great return policy). The 2nd unit works great. It acquires signal within 2 minutes from a cold start & less than 1 min waking up from “standby mode”.
It has great features & interface. The 3-D graphic is great, lane assist is another amazing feature that others only provide in their high-end line-ups (>$250). The text-to-speech (speaking out street name) is another wonderful feature that I cannot do away with once I have experienced it.
Overall, it has a very nicely designed interface & feature set. The only issue I see is the problem in acquiring GPS signal due to poor hardware (I surmise). I wouldn’t complain when I paid less than $70 (refurbished) for a product with such high-end features. All I needed to do was to rely on Amazon’s great return/exchange policy & took advantage of this wonderful deal. I would have given it a 5-star if not for the exchange I had to make.
Customer Service / Something to be desired
Do not buy this product if you expect the company to provide any kind of customer service at all. Product bought as new but was packaged with a refurbished warranty card. Apparently they are not able to market enough of these as refurbed so they attempt to pawn them off as new! Product comes with only a very basic “quick start” instructions and you must go to the web site to a PDF download of 126 page instruction book. When I attempted to contact the company by phone, I recieve a recorded message that all customer service is now handled via email. When I attempted to contact the company via email by the provided address,an error page appears! I have attempted to navigate the Navigon home page and it is a nightmare also. There must be a reason for the countless number of refurbed units available and I now know why. I am long gone from Navigon! You should be too!
ok
the only thing i find with this is that it does not notify me when there is slow moving traffic ahead and reroute me
Great GPS device if you’re willing to wait over night for a signal
Amazon has just delivered this GPS unit. I’ve got it powered up, turned on, turned on for more than 15 minutes, and no signal. I live in an area where people use GPS devices without problems. I’m pretty sure we get decent GPS coverage here. I left it on over night. Still claims to be looking for a signal. An excellent paper weight but the engineers at Navigon don’t seem to be able to build a device that can connect to the GPS network.
Simply put. DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE. I’m going to return it tomorrow.
They should now be called NaviGONE.
I bought my Navigon GPS (7200T) because it had the most features for the lowest price. That still holds true. Very nice unit- attractive and works well, too. Recently, I wanted to update the maps, but there was no Freshmaps Activation card in the box from Amazon. You need the code on that card to get updates. So, I emailed Navigon support for assistance. They sent the following:
‘Thank you for your inquiry. Accessories, map material and content are not available in North America through NAVIGON. Unfortunately we don’t have information concerning the availability of these products at other major retail shops.’
As has been noted in the posted comments, and which I discovered too late, Navigon is pulling out of the North America market. Beware of this major change, and buy accordingly. They should now be called NaviGONE.
Well worth the money.
To sum it up. The Navigon 2000s is a incredible GPS for the price. Some of the features such as lain assistance and reality view are awesome. It acquires satellites extremely quick and the turn by turn voice guidance are also a plus. The only real problem I seem to encounter is trying to get the GPS to navigate to an address that is not recognized by the unit. It is possible yet can be a pain. I found that it is most helpful to use the area code rather then the name of a town when you encounter this problem. Bottom line. This is a remarkable unit for the price and I’m very pleased. I have had it for about a month and a half and would recommend it to anyone. Hope this helps.
Good for the money
Pros:
Inexpensive, good quality, loud, good mounting holder, very helpful Lane Assistant.
Cons:
Slow satellite acquisition. Very first time it took about 15 minutes. Normally – about 3 minutes.
Not intuitive menu.
Driving on a highway, every time if there is an exit to another route, it says “Keep to the left” (if it’s a right exit), instead of saying “keep on going straight” or, simply, saying nothing at all. It might mislead you and make to move to the left lane.
Other thoughts:
First one arrived broken – didn’t see GPS signal. Amazon amazingly quick replaced it.
Navigon 2000S
This is my second Navigon GPS ,I am please with both of them. I am a school bus driver and I use the GPS on trips , it works wonderful. Will satisfied Jim.
Some ups, some downs
I’m not happy with this GPS. Though it will go into standby when you turn off your car, it will NOT power up unless you manually find the teeny tiny hidden button and hold it down for two seconds. This is not at all convenient.
Horrible, go buy Magellan instead! DANGER!
This is a horrible item. It looks nice on the outside, but it isn’t on the inside. The maps are expensive to update. On my first day, I bought this item and it shipped. On that day, I tested it out a little at my house. Then suddenly on one of the power ups, the Navigon froze. I shut it down, then started it again, when a message appeared saying “Cannot find path to MobileNavigator!” And what’s with the explanation mark? Are they happy? Navigon, you are crazy! I had nothing to do but to return it. I plan to buy a Magellan Maestro 3210. I think it is much better. Wow, Navigon! I thought it was good, but now I know: it is bad!
4 star
Product and price was excellent. But no full instruction booklet came with it. You were to go on line and print them if you needed them. If the papers came with it as well as a little better packaging (item was loose in the package) I would have rated it 5 star. Robert.
Not bad but needs something more
In all outward respects, this is a nice little GPS unit. Small packaged, lightweight, latest maps, quick satellite reception, text-to-voice. These are all nice features, but several other design shortcomings need to be addressed: (1) Grey lettering on grey background = hard to read (2) Voice commands not loud enough and not easily intelligible (3) Flat, lack of color display is boring (4) Terrible points-of-interest search engine (5) Lettering is very small and difficult to read (6) Display not very bright (7) Difficult to use “plus” or “minus” feature did not seem to work. (8) POI symbols are way to small to see very well.
Good features: (1) Excellent reality vue, but static. (2) Fast reroute feature (3) Accurate routing to destination (4) Good landmark displays (rivers, lakes, town names, etc.)
Good price but now there are too many quality GPS devices on the market to settle for less. Sorry !
gonbad
GPS works as promised,Instructions are ok but could be more explict but the online manual is sufficent. It could use More POI’s which I was told are in the making! All in all works as good as my $600.00 model!
Everything I needed without any extras
This Unit is the best value for your dollar. I researched several GPS Units before I decided to buy this one. I was specifically looking for one that had lane assist, but most of those Units were very expensive and had a lot of other features that I didn’t want or need. I bought this one on Amazon and use it everyday. It has worked great. It is simple to use, right out of the box. If you are in an area with a lot of trees, it can take a little long to lock in the satellites, but most of the time it takes less than a minute. I would recommend it for anyone!
