should have gone with a garmin
works ok for the most part. no instrustion so you kind of have to figure it out as you go.had it just over a year and had to reset it about 10 times, sometimes in the middle of travel. this sucks because you need a end of a paper clip to reset it and most people probably dont carry them in their car.bought it in 1st quarter of 2009 but it came with 4th quarter 2008 map. would of had to pay to update the map. not worth the price i think unless there has been major construction in your area. screen resolution is great. sometimes the talking to turn can be annoying when you know a better way to get around traffic and it thinks otherwise.
Don’t buy
I purchased the 7200T last year at the suggestion of a friend who used to work for Navigon. He failed to tell me that the reason they were on sale was that the company was pulling out of the US and planned very little support. This item has been discontinued since mid 2009. I only use this for travel when I need to rent a car because I have a built-in GPS in my car. Therefore I have only used it a few times. The features are great, particularly the lane assist. The touchscreen is very poor however. I tried to buy a Fresh Map subscription for updating the maps since having current POIs is important since I only use this in unfamiliar areas. I finally found one after days of searching. I think I bought the last one, so sorry. It worked great for updating the 1st quarter. Then I ran into a major problem. The 2nd update stopped and told me I ran out of space on my 2GB micro SD card. I aborted the update and left for a trip. Now the unit will not stay on in direction mode for more than 30 seconds. It works great in map mode and will stay on indefinitely. The solution (I hope) was to purchase a 4GB SD card. Fortunatley I followed instructions when I attempted to update my maps and backed up my SD card. Now I just restored to the mew 4Gb card and I am in the process of updating again. Hopefully this fixes the problem. I will let you know. Bottom line don’t buy a discontinued product from a company out of business (in the USA) when you can buy just as godd of ones from Garmin or TomTom.
gps
bought this for my parents for christmas. good unit for the price. gets you in the general area but up in the mountains not so accurate.
Excellent GPS
Pros
Rated 4.5 out of 5.
Good looking, and work very good.
Lane assistance is the best feature they have in this GPS
Much more excellent features.
Cons
Software boots slow when you turn on after being turned off.
Letters are bit small to read the sign on the GPS while driving.
Best value for the money at the time of purchase due to lifetime traffic
I purchased the Navigon 7200T in Dec. 2008. At the time it was the only GPS I could find with Free Lifetime Traffic. I wanted traffic and no monthly charges. The 7200T has always delivered on that function very well, right out of the box. Most of the con’s I have are the same as others have voiced. It’s not as easy to see and hear as my wife’s TOMTom. The Navigon has more features than the TT such as voice activation, and blue-tooth. I find the TT somewhat more user friendly on such things as touch sensitivity and set-up. I have had some software issues, such as it crashes every 3 or 4 hours on a trip. I can reset it or turn it off and back on and it works OK. We’ve had the TT for about the same length of time and it’s never crashed or failed in any way. I think the Navigon was a good deal in 2008 for $249.00, however I just ordered a TT with lifetime maps and traffic for less than $200. I will keep my Navigon as it’s still a good GPS, or give it to one on the kids. If the TTXXL540TM works as well as the two year old TT and delivers the traffic as well as the Nav7200T, I’ll be in “high cotton”. I like to buy American, if I could have found a Garmin with life-time maps and traffic, for around $200 I probably would have given that a shot. Unfortunately I couldn’t find one.
Nice unit with ZERO SUPPORT, beware.
I strongly recommend users to NOT BUY ANYTHING NAVIGON unless you don’t mind NOT having any support. I’m not kidding. Navigon figured they would not be able to compete with Garmin and TomTom, and they no longer distribute their products in the U.S. They still maintain a facility, but they do not have any phone support, period. They do have an e-mail link on their website, but you might as well forget about it, as they will not respond. I have e-mailed regarding at least three legitimate support questions and even followed up, but they have NEVER replied. If you want a nav unit, go either Garmin or TomTom as they are well established.
Worse than my old cheap GPSmile 52
The device looks nice and the routing is quite decent but it takes very long time to find itself on the map. Yesterday it was searching for satellites for for 30(!!!) minutes. My old GPS usually did it in less than 3 minutes.
Another complain is that traffic information is limited by freeways only. It is quite useless as the detour streets are jammed as well but the device is not aware of it.
Help getting around
At first I was extremely happy with my GPS but after being used for several hours it shut down. I turned it off for a while, reset it, and it started working againg. This happened more then once. I can’t use the GPS now because it needs to be updated and trying to update via email correspondence with the customer service rep has proved no help at all the. I will never purchase another product from this company again.
navigon 7200 navigation
this item was confusing at first after using it for a while it works very nicely it is better than my old gullian or what ever that other brand is it really understands my voice commands which makes this nav very simple to use recomend to anyone wanting navigation system
Navigon
Good price, fast shipping, lots of features including lifetime traffic updates with no additional fees. However Navigon is no longer providing service in the US. I would not recommend that device to anyone due to lack of customer service. Also POI are very limited on the included software. It is better to buy Garmin or Tomtom.
Great GPS!
I have really liked Navigon GPS products because they’re packed with features that you usually wouldn’t find on a Garmin or a TomTom at a similar price. Here are some of the features:
-RealityView at highway interchanges, which actually really does help with knowing which lane to be in at the upcoming exit. We previously owned a Navigon 2100 and I can tell that they have improved this feature in the 7200T– it now shows a bit more detail.
-LaneAssist Pro works well, but only in very large cities. We currently live in Milwaukee, and I’ve never seen the LaneAssist pop-up. But when we drive down to Chicago (even the suburbs of Chicago), suddenly the feature starts to work fairly well.
-the Bluetooth feature seems to recognise my Blackberry phone. Apparently, it doesn’t recognise all phones, though.
-the landmark feature (that shows major landmarks on the maps) is basically useless– some of the landmarks I could barely recognise. Besides, when it tries to draw those 3D images on the screen, it seems to slow down the device a bit. I eventually just turned that feature off.
-it takes a couple of minutes to get a good satellite signal, which is fairly normal in most GPS units.
-the points-of-interest (POIs) on most Navigon devices are not very plentiful. For general traveling, you can find a restaurant, a gas station, and even Zagat-rated restaurants and hotels, but don’t expect to find a local grocery store or the nearest Walmart. In other words, it works fine when you’re looking for any restaurant, but it probably won’t have a lot of the specific POIs that you might need. I think having a very comprehensive POI database is more of a Garmin-specific strength.
-the way that Navigon designed the power plug on many of its devices is just horrible. Why would they put a non-bendable power cord plugging into the bottom of the unit? This limits how low you can mount the GPS on your dashboard, otherwise the power plug won’t fit. Designing a GPS mount with the power cord built-in would have been a much better idea.
-we have owned this device for about four months now and I’ve had it freeze on me about four or five times now. When it freezes, I didn’t notice immediately, but the map was frozen on the screen and I had to do a hard reset. I don’t know if this is specific to the unit that I received, but it can be a bit annoying when it happens in a place where you don’t know where you’re going.
-the text-to-speech feature is pretty good– I can almost always understand the voice. Some words it pronounces amazingly well, but some words (even very common words!) are not pronounced properly at all. For instance, it pronounces the word ‘west’ as “whesht,” yet every once in a while it will pronounce it properly! Another word it says oddly is ‘avenue,’ which it pronounces as “avernue.”
All in all, I like Navigon products and don’t regret buying this device. If you’re a geek and get along fairly well with electronics, then this might be the device for you. But, if you’re like my parents and don’t really even understand how the internet works, then maybe you should look for a simpler device like the TomTom.
great features, awful support
i love the voice entry and that ’she’ re directs you when you go off course. i HATE the customer support- they only accept emails via their website and ask for 48 hrs to return emails!!!!! 48 hrs! the phone number is not 800 and you have to google navigon to get it- grrrrrrrr
Disappointing
Well… I researched the heck outta GPS’s and thought this Navigon was a good choice. I like the visuals, I like how the unit announces street names, I like how solidly the unit attaches to my windshield…
My sister’s Garmin Nuvi has continuing problems “accessing satellite” so the one thing I was really looking for in a GPS was reliability. I wanted a unit that would quickly find our location and at least set me in the right direction. For about 5 months, this Navigon met my expectations wonderfully. Then, one day, I was searching thru my saved destinations and the unit froze up when I got to “H,” for some reason. I turned the unit on & off, same thing happened. Did this a few times, though, and eventually, I was able to access the correct location & get the thing working.
Three months later, though, the same problem popped up. But this time, I could not for the life of me get the thing working again. Eventually, the unit stopped turning on and is currently “stuck” on the power-up screen — instead of moving onto the main menu, I get a blank screen & then the power-up thing again, followed by a blank screen and then the same power-up screen… again & again & again.
I can’t tell you how frustrating (and frightening) it is to feel stranded by an unreliable GPS! Similarly, it’s hard to describe how bad Navigon’s support is. Their 800 number refers you back to their website, which has very little practical info for someone dealing with a device that won’t turn on. I had to send an email and am currently still waiting to hear back…
Other things I don’t like about this GPS:
1. Points of Interest are USELESS — you can’t type in the name of a restaurant, you have to scroll thru endless categories & sub-categories to try and find someplace that should be listed. So let’s say you’re looking for “Iron Horse Coffee & Sandwiches” — would that be under “Restaurants” or “coffee shops”? And if under “Restaurants,” what kind of cuisine? American? Continental? British? Is it Zagat rated? That’s a whole other place to look… And since there are bazillions of listings, scrolling thru them all is ridiculously impractical.
2. Traffic — I like the real-time updates but they’ve never helped me when I try the “detour” option. Also, while some road conditions are covered, I’ve also encountered construction (around Valley Forge, PA) that Navigon had NO IDEA how to circumvent. Couldn’t get me into the park for the life of me.
3. Sometimes, Navigon won’t recognize a street name in a certain zip code, and as a result there are some addresses that I simply cannot enter. I can usually get around this by entering the city by name instead of zip code, but sometimes Navigon doesn’t even recognize this. I’ve had to google nearby locations to try and find something that Navigon can work with. Have never had this problem with other GPSs.
Quite disappointed with this unit, I’m sorry to say.
Navigon gone out of business in the U.S.
Even though you can buy this Navigon GPS on Amazon, don’t. The company no longer operates in the U.S. and you won’t get support or updates. You will be left out in the cold with nothing to do but return the unit to Amazon. Instead check out the various GPS’s from Magellan (the 1440 is a great unit), Garmin or TomTom.
Navigon now only makes an app for the iPhone 3G or 3GS for North America, but I’m reluctant to even try it, since they closed their doors in the U.S. in a flash, leaving users of their GPS’s supportless.
Good navigation unit
This is a good navigation unit but dont know what kind of service or updates i can get
now that Navigon no longer sells hardware in the US.
I would give the unit 4 stars but the lack of assurance of future updates and fixes give it a 3.
Buy this one!!!
I bought the Navigon 7200 last year at Christmas after many many weeks of researching GPS systems. I have to say it has been worth every penny and more! The feature that sold me on this product over the others was the reality view when you come to an exit or interchange on the freeway. I drive on the busy Sourthern California freeways and used to panic when I had to go anywhere new. Not because I couldn’t follow directions, but because if you don’t know the area sometimes you don’t know when to cross the 6 lanes of traffic, or which lane to be in for the exit or interchange to another freeway… and if you miss an interchage or an exit… it can be very complicated and nerve racking I used to hate going to anywhere on unfamiliar freeways for this reason. This device has changed all that! It shows me EXACTLY which lanes to be in. My husband loves this device just because of the freedom and confidence it has given me (and the freedom it has given him to not have to worry about me). I can go ANYWHERE now without being nervous. I drive a lot and I even help my husbands business out when they need me to deliver. I think it sounds dramatic to say that the Navigon has changed my life but it honestly has.
Now that I have raved about my favorite feature, I will tell you about my experience with the Navigon 7200 in general. I have had this GPS for a year. I have given it a very good workout over that year and have had little to no problems with it. It always has a signal. It finds things quickly and effortlessly. It re-routes instantly if you miss a turn. Always tries puts me on the correct side of the street for my destination. It has lots of settings to help you set it up the way you want (U turns no U turns, fastest route or optimum route, speed limit alert on or off, freeways or no freeways…etc). It has free lifetime traffic which you can also turn on or off on the unit. I use the voice entry for addresses all the time and it is quick and easy.I have used it in California, Michigan, and Tennessee and it was very accurate in all the areas. I have not ever updated it, but I should, because I think it comes with 4 free map updates (don’t quote me on that I need to look into it). Occasionally there is a new subdivision that it may not recognize, but that is really rare and I only know that because I do deliveries. It is very dependable. Out of all the time I have had it, it froze twice. It was no big deal because you just hit the reset button (although the reset button is hard to reach so I suggest keeping a paper clip in the car just in case. I just use the back of my earring.) EVen when you reset it you will be on your way within a minute or two and like I said that has only happened twice in the whole year that I’ve had it..
In conclusion, this product has become a neccessity in my life. It is my best friend when I am in unfamiliar territory and I can’t imagine ever being without it. I will never buy anything but Navigon for GPS devices in the future.
DO NOT BUY
Do not buy Navagon. I am sorry, I have almost never given a bad review of anything, but the Navagon is one I must speak out on. It has no support for users in the States. This means if you buy it today, you end up with the system as is (as it was in the box, already a year old). With no way to update the maps anymore, and no way to reach support (other than e-mail that they seem to never respond to).
I have had it for only six months and it worked fine up until the last 2 months. It stopped the supported traffic rerouting. It shows traffic but it won’t suggest a new route. This was the main feature in buy this thing (seeing as I live in Atlanta).
With no support and finding that I would not be able to update the maps. I would tell everyone. Stop buying this thing. No matter what the cost, you will replace it in less than a year if you live in a place that changes downtown like Atlanta.
In fact I would go so far as to say that Amazon might want to let people know. NO US Support. And they might want to update the reviews so that you don’t see the ones that came out in 2008. When this was a great buy.
Very Dissappointed – STAY AWAY
Poor quality product, unreliable hardware, teeny tiny fonts, tiny soft-buttons placed too closely to other hot spots on the screen, and ABSOLUTELY THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE – COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. I purchased this GPS from Amazon at an excellent discounted price. Have been using a Garmin Nuvi 630 for several years, but wanted to upgrade to all the “nice” features of this Navigon (all available now from Garmin for $199 on Amazon special). The Navigon was a disaster from the first day. It would reboot for no apparent reason while driving, so lose my destination address. The search function is extremely limited, you can’t type in the name of a store or place, it only searches its POI database. The touchscreen buttons are very poorly laid out and too small, so you can easily press the wrong hot spot and off it goes to the wrong screen. The font is too small to read if you are over 30 years old (unless it is 1ft from your face). No way to request a detour, except when it suggests one due to traffic (15 miles in advance). The unit was broken and lousy, but Navigon Customer Service wouldn’t even respond to me with an RMA number to return the unit. The automated email response would say I’d hear from Customer Service but they never responded. I sent 6 emails, each would get a quick reply, but I’d never get an RMA number to ship it back. I finally complained to Amazon, which kindly accepted the return (with a 20% restocking fee since it was past the 30 day return period). Navigon’s website seems only focused on their software for the iPhone, which probably is just as bad as their hardware GPS. They are AWFUL, go to Garmin instead.
to easy
this device is very easy to us and i think that the reviews, updates, and maps and just awsome and the bluetooth makes things alot easier while driving when you get a call, great quality screen and voice feature just makes it great… this would make a great gift for any driver
NaviGONE!
I bought my Navigon a little over a year ago. Its performance has been mixed, in line with much of the reviews here. However, I can now unequivocally state that you should NOT buy this product. Navigon has abruptly left the North American market, leaving customers, even those who purchased a device and map updates within the year, almost completely without support. If you buy one of these, you’re buying a dead device with no hope of updates.
