bad customer service for lemon product
Got as a gift as did another family member. Mine quit working within a month. After much run around got them to send me a new one after I paid $25. fee plus shipping. Family members quit working after 6 months and Nextar refuses to fix or replace even though within the 1 yr warranty because no receipt as proof of purchase. It was a gift! Do not buy. Many other comments about it quits working after a few months and Nextar is unhelpful will not stand behind their product. It also has roads named incorrectly.

After purchasing this GPS for my husband and finding out afterwards that the GPS was outdated on maps and there is no way to renew them. When I purchased in late 2009 the GPS was already outdated by 2 years. When we called the company with our disatification they finally agreed to exchange the GPS with one that could update, they had us mail ours in and sent one that was of lower value and actually lied when called to confront on this. Definitely would not recommend this GPS or anything affiliated to this company to anyone.
Nextar Q4 Review
If you have any experience with GPS, and you know what features and applications you really need and want, this is a decent little machine at a very good price point. I have a Tom Tom, Garmin, VZ Navigator, Toyota Navigation, and now this little unit. I bought this one for my motorcycle. THIS IS NOT A FEATURE OF THIS UNIT. I plan to have it in a tank bag purely as a reference to get me home if I get separated from the pack on a long ride. I don’t care about MP3, pictures, Bluetooth, spoken directions, or POI. My phone has plenty of POI if I really needed something. I have run it concurrently with all these other units, and I think it recalibrates or reroutes faster than any of the others. The screen provides all the basic visual info I need; time, arrival time, distance, speed etc. The UI is very intuitive, and set up is a snap. It has an SD card application for that time when upgrading maps is necessary. Every go through that experience on a Tom Tom? And I think you can download additional POI for a cost. I haven’t seen it work, but there is a funky feature called “Special Offers” such that if you drive by an establishment or store with a promotion running it indicates it on the screen- a commercial of sorts. As far as GPS goes and a basic instrument to get you from one place to another, I think this is a value. Now that said there is one major dislike and this could be a serious deal killer in my book. The screen is easily washed out in bright light. I think this is a very serious flaw that during critical times of need the driver cannot get the visual information they want. I bought the unit for very limited emergency type applications and didn’t want to sweat the cost it if I broke it or something happened. Something had to give to make this available at the price point offered. I don’t think it is the GPS “guts”, but more the materials used in the screen and lighting. At night it has a very rich appearance, but bright light could give you some problems. I think it will work fine, but be aware of its limitations.
Beware!
Don’t buy anything Nextar! They’re a total crock! They, without notice to registered owners, stop having updates for maps when they feel like it. It’s one use like having to use an old Rand McNally atlas for the year you bought it forever. They want you to participate in their ‘exchange program’ and buy a new one! Buy from a more reputable manufacturer – please!
Don’t waste your time, money, or safety on this product… AVOID IT!
i travel quite regularly, frequently 1k miles or more a week with my job. i received a Nextar GPS for Christmas last year. i left it in my car (go figure) and within three days the product would not start up… i had a black screen. So, i was able to return it, and opted for this larger version of the GPS system. Firstly, the web site is incredibly slow and i could not access the information on the site, but that was hardly enough reason to hate the product. Then, i noticed that while the GPS will update itself if you miss a turn, there is absolutely no way to add a detour. So, the stupid thing will have you traveling in circles if you happen to find yourself in a situation where you have to take a detour as it is determined to put you back on the road you were on. i travel in many rural areas; frequently the GPS will tell me i have arrived at my location when there is nothing there… On numerous occasions the GPS has told me i have reached my destination when my real destination was more than a mile away… a real pain when you have no clue where you are, resulting in me having to fiddle with my phone to call someone for directions! i finally had it with this product when i was traveling through snow (having just passed a 40 car pile up on the other side of a 4 lane highway) when the thing gave me an “out of memory” message 33 miles from my destination right as i was supposed to take an exit! It reset itself, and the only way to get the destination back was to type in the location again… Then, there is the time it told me that i had arrived at my location, which was an open field in the middle of nowhere… my actual destination was about a mile and a half down the road. On another occasion, this piece of crap had me travel about 25 miles down the interstate only to have me get off at an exit and get back on the interstate going in the opposite direction to reach my destination! On multiple occasions it will just totally wig out and start telling me to take every single exit or turn that i am coming upon! No kidding! Need i mention the constant updating that it will do while you are driving? This is a sweet feature, especially when you are on the freeway and knew that you were fastly approaching your turn and it is updating from the satellite! What should one expect from a product made in China anyway? If you have just simple navigation and time to fiddle, and like wasting money on unreliable products, go ahead and take the dive. Otherwise, avoid this product. This thing is generic, cheap, unreliable, and can be dangerous to a driver who doesn’t know the territory and is depending on this crappy thing to help you arrive to your destination quick and safely. Mine is in the trash, and i’m getting a Garmen Nuvi! This thing is not inexpensive, especially when you can get a far more reliable system for the same or cheaper. This thing can barely get your around the block, much less safely to your destination on a four hour trip or more! Have i said i hate it? i hate it. It is everything that is bad about chinese “technology” all wrapped up into one horrendous and dangerous piece of hardware.
Touch screen stopped working
It worked okay for a couple weeks, but then the touch screen stopped working properly. Buttons were constantly being activated when I was not touching the screen, even after I tried recalibrating it. This made it basically unusable.
It’s past the retailer’s 30-day warranty, so I guess I’ll soon find out about Nextar’s customer service and warranties.
too expensive to maintain
This is easy to use, and is fine for the first year. Then the cost of upgrading the maps exceeds the cost of the unti. Buy one of the more expensive uints with free map upgrades, it’ll be cheaper in the long run.
DO NOT BUY!!!
Bought this GPS NexTar Q4 at OfficeMax (do not buy electronics there either you will not get customer support at all). In 3 months had to change 2 units. With OfficeMAx extra warranty cannot exchange to 3 unit. Manufacture has funky process. You have to register on site and then you will get customer ID in 24-48 hours(do not know why). Only then you can call them an ask for any assistance. This manufacturer will not cover shipping. You will have to ship it yourself and they require include $25 certified check or money order. So total replacement will cost you around $40 – $50 (depends how cheaply you can ship GPS to them and hopefully you can get money order for free). Never buy anything from Nextar unless you like bad product and bad support. Just go Garmin or TomTom.
Stopped working on first trip would not recommend
Stopped working on first trip, no GPS signal. Only went a few blocks and it quit working and no matter what I do, reset and power off and on, has no GPS signal. I would not recommend the Nextar GPS at all. Useless after just a few blocks during first trip. Two thumbs down.
Do not buy!
Don’t waste your money people
I bought one on July by August the Graphs were messing up
so I call for warranty and it was exchange . I receive another one ” brand new”
It was working fine then, the speaker stop working and now the graphs are messing up again
I don;t know if am being lucky or what but I guess I woundn’t pay for a cheapy brand again
I had a mio c320 before and it was the bomb.
you have been warned . Dont buy this model !
It is not working and customer service is not good
After 15 days I bought, GPS is not working. I tried to fix it but Nextar charge $25 for shipping and handling.
I’m not going to buy this product anymore.
Good for the money
It’s my first, so I can’t compare it to others, but I have used it around the area and had no real problems. To make it better, the volume could be higher and the unit could have some sort of sun shade, the glare makes it hard to see and read.
Fair Product
I just bought a Q4 from Nextar a couple of weeks ago from Kmart. It is much cheaper than those GPS from other famous brand. To me, it is very user-friendly. The UI is very simple for me to understand and the navigator gives pretty clear instruction while I am driving, specially on the freeway. When it comes to POI issue,as a person who always checks out the info about the place I want to go online before actually moving out, Q4’s 1.6 millions of POIs is enough to fit my emergency needs. Honestly, it is not as great as some of the high class GPS from Garmin or TomTom. But it always takes me to where I wanna be. It is really a fair product with such a low price.
Frequent user and national traveler
I bought two of these and I have to tell you that they both work great. I really don’t know what the others are talking about, perhaps they don’t know how to use them.
I had a Garmin that broke and saw this one for so much less I had to buy it. It works as good as my old one and as to the POI complaint I saw above, it is nonsense. It has always found what I was looking for. If not I was always able to enter the POI address and find what I needed.
As to upgrades, I was told by Nextar’s 800# that not only will there be a map upgrade program available but you will be able to purchase millions more POI’s and other items on there web site in July.
This Nextar piece really gives me peace of mind for me and my wife and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Nextar is the worst GPS system made
I bought the Nextar at Kmart. When I turn on the GPS the system show I am in California when I live in New York. I couldn’t receive any GPS signal called up Customer service on a Thursday she said hopefully by Monday they have GPS system working. Wednesday came along still wasn’t working. I work in the EMS system. Having a reliable GPS is crucial to getting to a patient. DONT Purchase the Nextar you will be highly disappointed. You don’t have too many choices of settings. Worst GPS system ever made.
Needs more POI’s
This unit is ok but it’s lack of built in POIs makes it not as usable as others. This brand of GPS cannot download POIs from usual internet sources like Tom Tom and Garmin can, so you are stuck with just what is already loaded, which isn’t much. I was in the central valley of California looking for a Wal-Mart and the nearest one it showed me was in San Diego. I contacted the company and was told that downloading POI’s from other sources would ruin the unit and void the warrenty. I was also told that the company has no real plans to offer it’s own POI upgrade packages. I would spend the extra and get one that has more POI’s.
