DO THE MATH BEFORE YOU BUY THIS REFURBISHED UNIT!
I’ve a TT LE (2d Ed.), like it & decided to upgrade to the refurbed GO 720. The unit has great features and the price ($119) was OK.
However, ‘refurbed’ to me means ‘like new’ and the major problems are AMAZON does not tell you that it carries only a SIX MONTH factory warranty and that the map is at least 21 months old (on my unit). Cost to upgrade to the latest map from v.7 xx is $47 plus $48 for 4 quarterly updates. So, you’re looking at another $95 or $215 for a ‘refurb’ with a 6 months warranty. AMAZON should have full disclosure on their listings so the customer can decide! Another poster said they should be ashamed. How true! I may return it because of this. By the way, Staples ‘Black Friday’ ad will have a brand new TT GO 830 for $169 with an extra coupon discount of 10% on a single item.
Nice GPS, good value for a refurbished unit, looks like new!
The GPS unit is very nice, but the suction mounting method does not work. The friction mount listed with the GPS is incompatable with the GPS supplied suction mount. Another friction mount on Amazon (TTGO-SPH-GAFM: Mini Friction Mount for TomTom GO 520/720/720, 530/730/930) does work quite nicely with this GPS. The internal memory holds the USA mapping features, but one should add a 2GB SD card to the unit for additional map storage and other uses detailed in the instruction book. Note the IB must be downloaded from the Internet, over 100 pages, but there are a lot of features on this GPS to learn about. It is in color, so make sure your printer has plenty of ink before you start printing.
This unit supposedly works in Europe, there are several options for downloading European road maps at fairly reasonable prices. This is a Dutch company so they should know about European roads. You will need the 2 GB SD card for this, and you will have to download it to your computer and transfer it to the GPS unit. I haven’t done that yet, but I expect to use it in Switzerland next year. The Swiss want a lot of money per day for use of a car equipped with GPS, so there is value here in bringing your own unit.
720 grows on you with use.
If you want a GPS that has lots of features and you are willing to climb the learning curve…this is a good choice for you. The more I use it the more I like it. But it is like playing a musical instrument, you must practice with it. I like the way it: talks to you (and the male computer voice Dave you can download is much better than Susan that comes on it), can fix in realtime a map error, can create and save a route with waypoints (I read that few others do this), you can give addresses to it with your voice, you can create favorites and new POIs, play music and GPS voice to FM radio (added 2 gig SD chip)music pauses for direction instructions, search POIs on route, updates route rapidly if you miss a turn. The map functions are really sophicisticated. You can easily search the map in 2d view with zoom functions and selected poi’s and your own markers showing. Just for fun, in about 10 minutes I made a walking tour of monuments in DC and saved it as a route. If you are planning to go somewhere and you need to be there at a time, tell it and it will update you as to your ETA as you drive. It will also tell you what the speed limits are and warn you if you are speeding! If you are willing to pay extra it will track traffic and also gas prices. Plus it easily found my Palm phone and uploaded it’s phonebook. It is an excellent hands free Bluetooth unit for the phone and easy to use. I really recommend this GPS. It is so much more than a GPS but is an excellent GPS as well. Oh and there is tons of addons to download at TomTOm Home. OH the referb comes with the 07 map. So I called TomTom Customer Support and complained about it being so old and they gave me the maps that are only one quarter old. Made me a happy camper. Only 12 bucks to get the most recent quarter. This unit is well worth the 119.00 price tag. OK one thing that Tomtom can improve, POI searching. There should be subgroups like for resturants, then subgroups like Italian, Mexican, BBQ, Burgers, etc.
Refurbed Units Have Not Been Checked
Amazon sent me three of these units and all three were malfunctioning. In all three cases I called TomTom and they confirmed the defect.
The first responded to ghost touches in the upper right corner of the screen. (You didn’t have to actually touch it, it just thought it was being touched and responded to that.) If you keep pressing a spot in the upper right, the unit will eventually call the police. This is a rapid fire sequence of touches and very difficult to cancel. It called my local police 9 times before I could stop it.
The second had a problem in which when you press a key on the onscreen keyboard it would actually select the letter above or to the right of the one you pressed. I posted a video of that.
The third unit hard crashed every time I connected it to my computer. Only pressing the reset button with a paperclip would bring it back. It seemed to work correctly other than that.
Overall I liked the operation of the Go 720, but Amazon got ripped off by the company that supposedly refurbished these units. They just repackaged them and sent them out again without sufficient testing.
Excellent Buy
Purchased the Tom Tom 720 as refurbished. You would never know it was refurbished. Right out of box was in super condition and worked like a charm. Becaused I’d never purchased a refurbished item before I also bought the warranty that was offered. But, its too was a good buy. I certainly would recommend Amazon to any person seeking outstand prices and so far excellent products.
I’m never lost!
Ok so my friends all have one. I know it sounds cliché but it’s true! Anyway I’ve had a chance to use them and play with them before I purchased this model. I FREAKING LOVE IT! I bought it refurbished from TOMTOM, and so far so good! It’s so easy to use, and it’s very sleek, and handy. I just moved here from a different state and got sick and tired of getting lost. Now I never will get lost again! Thanks TOMTOM!
TomTom is Tops. Refurb is a disappointment with old maps
TomTom is Tops!! My 510 worked flawlessly for about two years. I chose to update the maps and the features by buying a refurbished 720. To my surprise the maps are “7 quarters” out of date (1 3/4 years). That is ok because I was going to purchase a map update at $9.95 / quarter. The zinger is that I must purchase 7 quarters to make the map current for $49. Then, I am required to purchase a year’s updates at $11.95/quarter. Not sure how but that totals $98. I add that cost to my replacement cost and I have a unit that costs more than a new unit which comes with current maps. I can make a one time purchase of an updated North American map for $89 but then later I would have to get into the quarter update retroactive deal.
Had the descriptive material stated that I would be spending $100 to get it current, I would have spent $50 more and gotten a new unit with a new warranty.
This does not take anything away from the functioning of a TomTom that is excellent. My only hesitation against a Garmin is that the Garmin is much easier to upload my list of POI’s or my dealer base account list. However the 4.3″ screen offsets that by a significant margin.
Bottom line? Compare to a new cost with current maps. How out of date can they be? Not only new roads are corrected but errors of misplaced roads are corrected. Your call. This is my 2nd refurbished and I expect to get a 3rd in a couple of years and also get one for my son-in-law. Outdated maps can be offset by price and function.
What Have I DONE?
Bought my TomTom 720 almost a month ago. It stopped working about 10 days ago. Customer service is really hard to understand and I believe I may have just lost my rather large investment (for my limited budget) to the wonderful folks at TomTom. My “refurbished” model must not have been “furbished” very well.
Bad Purchase
I purchased this reconditioned product. I was not told it had out of date maps which Tom Tom wants 96.00 to bring up to date. This is a rip off and Amazon should be ashamed.
TomTom GO
Returned this item – could not download the maps. We then purchased the Garmin and absolutely LOVE IT! Much better system…much easier to use.
This review is for the refurbished 720
The device itself is great. But the refurbished model arrived set up with Dutch menus. If this happens to you click the wrench icon then the “more” arrow until you see a flags icon (takes about 5 clicks) then select your language of choice(the manual inexplicably doesn’t offer this information). It also didn’t include the software CD and tomtom doesn’t honor their latest map guarantee on the refurb unit. The refurb unit also has a short 6 month warranty.
To sum this review up the unit itself is great. The refurb deal isn’t, in light of the short warranty and old maps.
I can’t travel without it anymore
This GPS singlehandedly makes driving to new locations more enjoyable and now I can concentrate on the road instead of following printed directions. I found the screen layout to be very usable and friendly. Two features that I was looking for was Spoken Street Names and multi-destination itinerary, however, i found myself not using those features. The synthesized voice isn’t as pleasant as the real voice and there is some sort of software bug that causes the voice to cut out. When I switched to a real voice (non-synthesized), it worked better but with no spoken street names. The spoken street names is useless for California, since most names aren’t english anyways. Another feature I liked about this model was the ability to use it as a hands free speaker/mic to my cell phone (iphone) via bluetooth. I did have a problem with my initial refurbished unit that the speaker was flaky, the replacement unit was better. Don’t forget to try the Darth Vader voice, he will lead you to the dark side
I would buy this model again.
TomTom GO 720
Received item when expected, and really like all the features it has. Have used it on two trips; the second trip it worked great, the first one to Rogers, Arkansas the maps weren’t up-to-date along the interstate and part of the time it looked like I was in a field.
Great GPS
I love this GPS device great maps great free content through the TomTom Home only problrm is can’t get Music to work from Itunes contnet does not recognize Itune format other then that it is awesome..
Great but beware
Unlike new Tom Tom units… this unit does not come with a free map update. So if you get a refurbished unit that is out of date………. break out your wallet.
Amazon…. you should have mentioned this in your description.
Not compatible with my lg voyager. NOT HAPPY!
I bought the to go 720 so I could use the phone hands free featue, but to my surprise when it wont link up to my lg voyager from verizon. I already had a Gps but not bluetooth for useing u r phone in the car, Now I have 2. what a B***h.
POI Issues
Don’t get me wrong. This unit is pretty good for the price and functionality but it lacks the ability listing of POI which is very important to me. I compare this with the Magellan and Magellan POI consist of over 1 million listing of the USA. I rather use a unit that I don’t have to download POI before I travel to another states. I can’t even find one from my state which is California. I tried downloading some POI and it’s also a hassle. You have to download it 1 by 1. I don’t think I would like to carry around a phone book for each states that I travel to.
Anyway, I return the unit for a full refund
Refurbished 720 – Amazon had damaged parts
The TOMTOM was fine and having had one before easy and great to use. However BEWARE refurbished. It is supposedly factory refurbished. The TOMTOM was fine but the windshield TOMTOM holder had a damaged and “Glued” ball joint. ie someone had glued this up and returned the unit. It was clearly not spotted by the factory / Amazon
I followed the return prodeduce, but did not want to return the whole thing (windscreen unit value ($25). So I call the help desk. Helpful chap who is sending me a label to return this part after my holiday to have it replaced.
also MAP update was out of date so for $20 difference I would go for NEW if I was you vs factory refurbished.
“Incredibly good”
There is approximately 1 month that I bought “Tomtom Go 720″ from Amazon.com.
So far, it is working wonderfully well. Live in Brazil and it (refurbished) works as well as here. Just buy the maps on the company’s website and install the device. So far, I see no negative point for the device, especially considering the price I paid (which corresponds to approximately 1 / 8 of the price that is paid in Brazil). He is fast and very precise.
I recommend to all who want a wonderfull GPS device at an affordable price.
sad
product would be perfect if it had current maps, not ones that are 2 yrs old
