Don’t buy TomTom
I seriously considered throwing my TomTom out the window about 6 months ago. As I was on my way to a meeting, Tom Tom added 2 hours to a 5-hour trip. This is typical of what I’ve received in return for expensive updates. My neighborhood is 7 years old, but Tom Tom updates just began to recognize it (2010). My family and I take long summer road trips. For the past few years, I’ve update my Tom Tom with hopes that it will be worth the $60 upgrade. Instead, I am totally ripped off. This is legalized crime. Take my $60 and give me nothing in return. Tom Tom adds time to destinations, is missing roads, and is mostly worthless. I always bring a Mapquest print-out of my journey, and it is always much more efficient. Of all the money I’ve invested, I keep holding on to Tom Tom with the hopes that I will see a valuable return. It is time to say “good-bye” to Tom Tom and get a Garmin or iphone.
Great GPS — best bang for your buck.
Tom Tom makes a fantastic product line, making a GPS for any budget consideration. Great product support with constant updates via the Internet. I own four of them.
my GPS from Amazon
I was very satisfied with my GPS that I bought from Amazon. A brand new product with perfect condition and easy to use it. I love it.
Very good GPS
If you need to get from A to B reliably, then this is a great GPS. I’m giving 5 stars with the qualification that you are looking at it for the price. You wouldn’t compare reviews of a Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Corolla, so keep it in that context. For the price, it is an excellent unit, I have zero complaints. I got this cheap on a black Friday sale for use on business trips when I’m flying into unfamiliar cities. My wife has an older, more expensive Garmin and this keeps up with that and does some things better. If you want all the fluffy extras, then you need to spend more money. It can be found for 20$ less at another website.
TOM TOM GPS
The GPS is good, The price is great but TOM TOM…. it will get you where you want to go but not to the front door like my other GPS. :/
Useless in Alaska
I owned a refurb 130. The map datums for Alaska are over 15 years old. I was told to turn onto old highway alignments, 2 hour trips show up as 6 hours. random voices saying to turn right every 5 minutes.
Performed map updates, no change. emailed customer service, form letter response.
I sent the unit to my parents in the lower 48. It works well for them. For me, I bought another Garmin.
Tom Tom is excellent, love the current speed option
The Tom Tom is just what we were looking for, a reliable, fully featured GPS without a huge price tag.
Do your research — UNRELIABLE
I was loving loving loving my tomtom–so easy, so helpul etc etc etc….until I ran into the dreaded “no valid GPS signal” error. Before you buy, poke around on the internet or a few minutes and see how many people have posted reporting this same problem. Tomtom claims an easy fix, but it doesn’t work. I now have a GPS that in the middle of a trip will just stop working. FOR DAYS! Obviously I don’t use GPS when I know where I’m going, so you can see the problem this causes. Who wants to have a GPS that you have to back up with maps, my iphone, etc. I will never buy Tomtom again. I wish I had read more about these before I bought this one. The problem stretches back years and seems to affect all models.
Didn’t need the chargers – they are in the box
I just received the Refurbished TomTom 130 3.5 GPS. I bought the bundle because the description did not clearly state that the car charger and the home charger were included – waste of $. The car charger came in the box and the unit will charge off the computer with the USB cable. At this point I don’t know how it will work so I have only rated it 3 stars. It’s charging and downloading maps now and that it supposed to take 2 hours. The other thing I did was power it up and then try to take the clear film off the screen – don’t do that… you will end up in a foreign language and never get back to a language you can read until you make the call to technical support and they walk you thru the screens. It’s a learning experience. I’ve read that updating the maps upon receipt causes problems and I wasn’t going to do it, but after the call to tech support about the language, I thought I’d go ahead and give it a try. Well see what happens.
LOVE IT! After reading some reviews, I thought I would have trouble getting it to stay on the windshield – No problems so far. Once you “dial” in the suction cup it stays put. I put it on the left side of the windshield up high and when you get out of the car you can’t even tell it’s there. It’s also in very easy reach for entering destinations. My husband has the original from six years ago and that box is so heavy it was always falling off the dash and he paid $800 at the time. I may just get him one of these – it’s just been that great and at the refurbished Amazon price why wouldn’t I?
Great Product…I have two!!!
Very easy to purchase and arrived promptly. Very happy with the product. I had purchased one previously for $150.00 and was happy with it. Gave it to husband that travels over the road and purchased this one for me!!!
Good product
This is a great Gps. This was the first gps i bought, and it was used. It looked like new and worked just great. I decided to give it to my sister and buy another one for me. It was a mistake since I ordered another used one and It didn’t even want to turn on… i would charge it and it would just not work at all. Amazon gave me a refund for it. Then i decided to buy a TomTom xl, and to my surprise, the xl version doesn’t work as well as the smaller version because it seems to take longer to find the satellites, and the screen is in a rectangular shape.. which distords the image.
If i was to buy another gps.. i would buy a brand new TomTom One 130 3.5 inch. Just don’t buy the refurbished one because it’s like gambling.. you might get a good one or a useless one that you will need to return to Amazon.
great gps
This is a great little gps. The time to get a satellite in NYC for me takes about 15 seconds. I always have about 8-9 satellites. The screen isnt so small that you cant see. But its build is small and quite portable. For a refurbished product it was in quite good condition, no major marks or anything that i could see. The maps in this are old but its not years old(more like months from the current maps being used i believe, Tomtom releases 4 updates a year i think). Pretty much every street is right. I have only run into 1 street that was different in my 2 month usage so far. My main complaint is the mount that comes with it sometimes falls off randomly, it has happened around 10 times or so. I am worried it will break if it falls down on something hard, but so far it still functions fine. For the price i think this gps is worth a buy if you need a gps on the cheap.
Love my Tom Tom
The Tom Tom is a great GPS. It is easy to use. My daughter has another brand and it is very complicated, the Tom Tom was very easy to use right from the beginning.
TomTom ONE 130
I finally broke down and purchased this GPS after having direction problems a couple months ago. It is pretty simple and straight forward to use out of the box. (I could not get it to stick to the windshield. I called customer support. They told me to turn the dial around the suction cup. That solved the problem.)
I was skeptical to purchase a GPS after driving with people whose GPS directed them in roundabout ways as the earlier MapQuest days, and it took patience to program. After a tiny bit of practice, the TomTom One 130 is easy to program and enter addresses. It has a very good database. It will guide you directly to your destination although it provides other options such as scenic, no tolls, etc… If you make a wrong turn or go off course, the TomTom rapidly makes corrections.
My only minor grievance (may partially be my fault) is hearing the directions while radio is playing. It is easy to adjust the volume although I do not think I play the radio that loud. It is also simple to tap the screen and have it repeat the last direction.
Great value!
Great value for the price! Easy to use and accurate. Route re-calculation is especially helpful
GPS-tom tom (refurbished)
Nice product and works really well like new. The packaging was superb, and it arrived within a week.Highly recommended….
Works great for me
I downloaded the new maps without any problems. The operating directions were easy to follow. Nice GPS for the money.
Excellent buy for $59
Small screen but gets the job done. Works just fine and I picked it up on an Amazon special for only $59.
Amazingly good for the price
I live in the UK and have a TomTom Go 530 at home. I bought this reconditioned TomTom on a visit to Princeton and Hawai`i as it worked out cheaper than buying the USA map for my UK TomTom! Though the TomTom One 130 doesn’t have all the features of the Go 530, it does a great job of navigating. I also really like the new EasyPort mount that makes mounting the the device on your windscreen easy!
There was one oddity: when driving down the Pali Highway into Honolulu to go to the Ala Moana shopping center, the TomTom directed me to go left near the end of the Highway. There was no left turn, rather an overpass which would eventually take me left, but only by taking a right-hand exit from the Pali Highway. It didn’t matter in the end as I actually took a much more direct route than the one it had planned for me.
An inexpensive option
If you’re looking for a simple, cheap way to get a GPS system, this is a great bet. I purchased this unit after borrowing a much more expensive system for use on a recent trip and deciding I wanted one of my own, but didn’t want to spend a lot of money.
For the price, the Tom Tom is a great choice. The screen is big, bright and easy to read. The large speaker provides clear audio, even when set to a high volume to be heard over the radio and road noise. Using the unit couldn’t be easier. The control system is extremely intuitive and gives you almost no need to look at the manual.
The downsides are ones that come with almost any system at this price point. It doesn’t have the memory to contain nearly as large a database of points of interest as some higher priced units. It also does not read street names aloud, instead only displaying the name of the next road or street on the screen and giving spoken directions saying the direction and distance of the next turn. Neither of these are a big deal for me, but they could be for some people.
One major drawback to purchasing this as a refurbished item is the lack of a free map update when you get the unit. You’re going to be dealing with maps that are at least a couple of years out of date and Tom Tom’s updates are not cheap. The difference in price between buying a new unit and this refurbished one can easily be made up when you consider that a new one would come with one free update for the maps to allow you to start out with the latest versions.
Still, all in all I would recommend this system to anyone needing a simple, low cost navigation system. Despite the drawbacks, it’s worked well for us so far and is definitely worth the price.
