Apple Mac users beware!! Use of TomTom Home will cripple the unit
If you do not disable the Spotlight feature of the Safari Browser, AND this is NOT specified prior to use of the TomTom Home update module – Safari WILL organize the files on the device and it will start to circular loop – and you will not be able to use it again until you call TomTom support and spend at least 45 minutes trouble shooting the issue and configuring Spotlight to stay out of the device’s files. My 130s is now a paperweight, because I followed online support and deleted the US map file. TomTom support was unable to fix the unit or accept it for repair because it was out of warranty.
Great GPS for price
This is a great GPS, having used several other brands on the market including owning a Garmin (that cost $500) I can’t say enough about the Tomtom 130S. Text to speech, smart routing, lets you save your exact location on the map. I like being able to edit the map, also the speed alert feature is very useful. Perfect size you can fold it up and carry it in your pocket! I love it and plan on replacing my wifes Garmin with a Tomtom.
TomTom One 130
It will get you close to where you wish to go. It often says “you have reached your destination” when you haven’t quite made it. Programmed complete address of a motel in Virginia and it took us to an abandoned little town and said “You have reached your destination. Had to drive out of “town” and stop at a gas station and ask directions. It is a little slow identifying streets. Often they aren’t identified until one has driven past them. Often doesn’t show rivers and streams, lakes, etc. Attempted to get an answer about this online but never got anything except the “form response.” If you Google TomTom and call their 800 number you can get a “live” person. I’ve talked with three separate individuals and finally got about 1/3 of the bodies of water to show up after three downloads of maps. Many streets in our area are still not being found.
It works as an accessory to Google Maps and paper road maps but one might do well not to rely on it alone. I do like how the POIs display on the screen.
You can not escape cost with these things
Briefly, I love the help the GPS brings, but the cost for map updates is too high. It’s nearly the cost for the refurbished device. I’ve never had to spend $200 on maps before; I’m not sure the benefits of a GPS is that high.
campact and very functional
the TOM TOM 130S is a great GPS. very small and compact, easy to use, easy to personalize. Once i updated the map (free), it worked great. Excellent GPS
A must for peace of mind
First of all I have to say that I bought it as factory refurbished and seen no different with the brand new one.
The map was easily updated and in order to use the S function you have to use the computer voice not the human voices.(This issue made me confused for awhile)
needs better maps
In the city the maps seem to be good so far but I live in a more spread out rural area with about 70,000 people surrounding Wasilla, Alaska and the maps need serious improvements. Many roads on there that do not exist and many that are there but not on the map. putting an address in to find the destination is usually a lost cause, sends you to the wrong place. Not at all impressed with the local maps. Mostly just sits on my desk at home now because it is useless here.
great value
a great value for the money. still learning how to program and it made a great low cost gift.
Great as a Budget PND. Wife loves it.
Needed something for my wife to use to get to the mountains. She rarely travels without me driving. Ordered this – got it the next day. Maps are slightly dated and even though some new roads are on it – the direction-calculator ignores a couple of the most recently added roads. Other than that – the text-to-speech is great. The feature set is good. And for the price we paid – couldn’t ask for more. I like Tom-Tom over Garmin because we installed the PC software and can make updates/corrections and save personal features. The comparable Garmin doesn’t.
Good for the money
This is a low end navigator. A bit hard to use due to small screen. Color schemes do not change (only night and dat color available0. Overall it is a good but for the money. But for a bit more money you can get one that is customizable.
Great Basic GPS for less than $100
After looking at many reviews and comparing brands, I decided on a TomTom One 130S. I was going to get the base model without the text-to-speech but having is worth the extra $10-20. I don’t have to look at the GPS unit as much since it’s telling me the street names. I used it for our vacation a few weeks ago and it was flawless. Great navigating, re-routing and quick signal. I also got the latest maps for free by following a previous reviewer instructions. I’m happy with it and for the price it was great!
TomTomOne 130S Refurbished
This is the 2nd time that I bought a factory refurbished unit. I will never buy refurbished again because they are not returned to factory standards as advertised.
Good Buy
Brought this for my daughter, she just loves it. She take it with her wherever she goes and has no trouble finding locations
Map Updates
I bought my 130S about a month ago and have been using it almost daily since. Other than the once-in-a-while slightly strange routing it has performed very well. It always gets me where I want to go, even if the route is slightly different than I’d have picked on my own. The unit picks up satellites well, even in my house. I connect to TomTom Home once a week to update satellite positions, so it connects well.
The reason I’m writing is that when I got the unit my maps were 6 quarters old. I did the Tools > Use Latest Map Guarantee method to update my map and was told that my unit was not eligible for the updates. I checked this option each week and got the same message every time. Yesterday, after having the unit for more than a month, I tried again and was pleasantly surprised with a notice saying that updates were available. So, I downloaded the updates and now my maps are current. Anyone know what’s up with that? I’m much more happy with my unit now that I know I have up-to-date maps.
The other thing I like about the unit is the option to mount it on my dashboard, rather than on the windshield. The legal windshield location in California is very inconvenient to use. I stuck the provided disk on the top of the dashboard in a convenient place and the unit is now easily accessable with no obstruction of my view of the road.
GREAT GPS
I wanted a GPS but didn’t want to spend a lot as I don’t need it often. This GPS fits the bill. It is very easy to use and is very accurate. I’m very glad I chose this TomTom and I would recommend it to anyone who asks.
A best buy
I purchased this TomTom for my wife who was flying into New Jersey, renting a car, and driving into the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, then back to the airport. She has ner used a GPS before, but said she had no trouble figuring out how to put in her destinations. She stated that the turn by turn instructions with street names were clear and easy to understand.
Then I loaned the TomTom to my mother in law to help her find a wedding in Louisiana. She is not too tech savvy, but had no trouble whatsoever.
I have played with it driving through my hometown and noticed one or two streets incorrectly named, but no big deal. I did go to TomTom’s website to see if I could snag a free map update as some reviewers state they were able to do, but with no luck. This refurb unit has maps “four quarters” old and TomTom wanted something like $79 for new ones. Heck, if I had that kind of change lying around I wouldn’t have bought a refurbished unit in the first place!
So let me get to the point: For the money I can’t imagine getting a nicer GPS, and one that tells you the street names too. So what if you can’t upload new maps for free. How often do you need to go to some newly developed street anyway? Mainly you use a GPS to find somewhere in a city or state for which you are unfamiliar. Snatch up this TomTom before they sell out!
The Razor is almost free. It’s the blades that cost money
We just finished a trip to Glacier National Park, Whitefish and Columbia Falls, Montana. The Tom Tom performed very well and was especially helpful in getting us around inside the City of Spokane. GPS units are very helpful in getting you out of difficult spots. The major fault with all of the sales material on the Amazon site is that no where does it say that you will have to buy the map updates. And you will have to buy the back issues depending on when your unit went into service. This being the case, you would be better off paying more and buying a brand new unit. Customer service got my update price down to about $60, but that was the best they would do. Updates are about $40 a year. I am going to have to buy six quarters, or about sixty dollars.
Also true: I guess that you could buy the unit and never update the maps. We have a dozen old maps around our house and the information is mostly accurate. The Tom Tom might serve you very well if you never went anywhere where new streets go in.
Great Buy!
I purchased this about a month ago. I found it extremely easy to use. I know some people are saying that they did NOT get a free map update. I connected mine to the computer as soon as I got it. It connected to the TOMTOM home page right away and asked if I wanted the free update. It took awhile to update, over an hour. You can downlaod other points of interest and voices. However can be very time consuming, after you choose to download a new POI or voice it kicks you back out to the menu page, where then you have to go through all the pages again to get to where you left off. Also only the computer voices (TOM or SAM) will say the street name.It will automatically recalculate directions if you miss the street, not just say turn around. For the cost its an extremely GREAT BUY. My boyfriend has even bought one after he saw mine and plans on buying another for his parents for christmas.
i would buy it again
a very good product was delivered in a short amount of time and works very well.
Very nice GPS with great value
I like this GPS, it’s just 3.5 inch but works great and have very intersting options to guide you to the right destination.Colorful and very helpful with less money.
