Wanted one and bought this one. Works great and is fine. If I had to do again, I might get one with the bigger screen, but no biggie. Great gadget for the money!

I own a Garmin (comparative in price)and I have tried this TomTom. The TomTom is very easy to use and set up is great. It’s very compact. I like how you can download other owner’s street corrections. It also has a lot of customizing features.

    What I don’t like.

The TomTom seems to always pick out of the way directions both in distance and in time. Garmin picks the same routes I would have taken 9 out of 10 times.

You have to manually change the display from night to day. I leave very early in the morning so I need night-time display and then I have to change it back to day-time when I’m leaving work to go home. Not a big deal, but the Garmin does it automatically based on sunrise and sunset times (a nice feature while you are driving). You also cannot change the brightness on the display (you can on the Garmin).

If you zoom out on the display, it doesn’t stay zoomed out. As soon as you come to the next calculated turn, it zooms in and stays zoomed in. The Garmin also zooms in for the turn but then zooms back out to where you set it.

After using both products, I love my Garmin and I am putting my TomTom on Ebay.

I wanted a basic and affordable GPS. It is doing a great job. I did hesitate between this version and the 140S which spells the name of the street instead of just saying ‘turn right’, but so far I don’t think I need the S option, and the name of the street is written on the screen. Also it doesn’t have real-time traffic report (and this is not a free service anyway even if your GPS can take it) it does have some knowledge of typical traffic at given time, like google map by example. However, the real-time could be nice for construction works. Itès very easy to use on the fly.

When I first got it, I plugged it to my computer, went on TomTom website to download their manager and did a bunch of updates. It is slow but it is working. Also TomTom has a great price for map update. Instead of paying $100 to buy one new map per year you pay $40 to get 4 updates per year…

If you are like me and just need basic GPS function for random or vacation trip, i.e. where timing is not an issue this is perfect. However, if you are a sales rep, get an advance model and pay for the updates and real-time info.

I also after trying both the 3D and 2D modes, I now use the 2D mode zoomed-out.

Having been an owner of a Tom Tom One XL, I was happy to see a smaller version that I could take on business trips. I was exited to see the new lane features and verbalizing the street names. However, I could not be more disappointed with my latest Tom Tom.

    1. The suction cup sticks about twice. I purchased a dashboard “pad” to attach it to and it did not work. I finally put velcro on it and permanently stuck in my old truck. So much for “Portable” more like unusable. The only exception was in a PT Cruiser rental I tucked it under the passenger visor.

    2. The verbalization of the street names are unrecognizable about half the time. I now live in San Jose and it pronouces it Son Woosy. So that feature is a waste of time.

    3. Lane featurs – They work sometimes but if there are multiple exits it does not, and it fills your screen so you cannot read the name of the exit (remeber I turned off that feature because of the unrecognizable pronouciation.)

To add insult to injury, they offered 18 months of map update service for only $, when you go to buy it you have to buy a full upgrade for $ then the $ for upgrades. I can buy a new unit for less than that and get the most recent upgrade.

I will be looking at other Company’s for my next GPS

Love this product! Its so easy to use and the perfect size.

I can drive anywhere now with confidence knowing I won’t get lost EVER.

    It’s great.

This unit is very unreliable. It permanently loses the signal 50% to 60% of the time that it is in use. Obviously one cannot count on it for navigation with that lack of dependability. A big disappointment.TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Easy to use, can find anywhere I need to go. It takes a few minutes to acquire the satellite, but if I turn it on just before I go it’s fine. People say it can be a little slow, but I’m in a big city and if I drive at a reasonable speed it has no problems keeping up. Very quick to adjust when I make a wrong turn. Overall, VERY pleased.

Had a Navigon before this one only thing I wish it had was text to speech for street names otherwise great.

It has all the basic features I need for a GPS. The price is great. It might make mistakes sometimes.

This is my second Tom Tom (I have one in Europe and one in the US), after having tried other brands. Basically, TomTom are so simple to use, easy to set up and do everything you need them to. On top of this, there are always new surprises – despite being market leader by a mile, they still keep innovating. For instance, on this one I found it had an advanced lane warning system which shows you a picture of which lane you should be in at each junction – this was SO helpful on the freeways of LA where you can have up to 6 or 7 lanes.

Maybe I am unlike most of you, but my gut tells me this is not the case! I have a wonderful mother. Unfortunately, she is not tech savvy. For years, we’ve laughed at some of her fun sayings. Our favorite, is that she is going to ‘fax you an email’. Why not just write an email Mom?

Regardless, her and my stepfather, were looking for a GPS and assigned me to the task. I read all about this model and figured that this would work for them. Surpringly, they figured it out with no problems whatsoever. I downloaded the manual as I offered myself as their personal tech support. The result: I’ve NEVER been contacted whatsoever. Yes, I have spent many hours on the phone with them trying to teach them how to zap their temporary internet files or troubleshoot their wireless (yikes) connection. However, as soon as they put it in the car, they were able to figure out all of the features and put it to use. They’ve not been lost since and were even able to navigate the city of Chicago with it, a feat that they previously would not have done. This is a great GPS and you can’t beat the price and amount of features packed inside.

This is a great product for anyone. Very easy menus, very easy to use and higly valuable for long car trips. Just ask my mom as I am sure she will agree!

I’m the type of person who gets lost in a paper bag. I don’t have to worry about that any more with my Tom Tom GPS. Even if I miss a turn it directs me back to where I’m going. My only complaint is that it doesn’t announce the street name to turn on. It is displayed on the screen but my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. Maybe I should’ve gotten the larger screen model! It does display large arrows in the direction to turn which I can see and repeatedly tells me to turn left or right. There have been a few instances (very few) where the turn wasn’t announced but the arrows show you where to go. As I said, if you miss a turn it’s not a problem. It still gets you there! I haven’t used all the features yet but I’m happy with it so far. It was a good deal for the money.

I live in Wisconsin. Some municipalities in Wisconsin have addresses that look like “W1234 N12 Main Street”. The problem is you cannot enter such an address in any TomTom product (including this one). This makes the unit pretty useless in this area. Not sure if this is unique to Wisconsin or not.

Before you buy this, or any other Tom Tom product, note that they provide absolutely no repair services after the warranty expires. My unit stopped working two weeks after the warranty expired. When I called to request a repair, the customer service representative informed me that the company will not, under and circumstances, repair a unit that is out of warranty. ,) I was told that I could get a discount on a new Tom Tom via. their trade-in program, despite the fact that our current unit is dead as a doornail. However, when I used their online tool to appraise my unit, the trade-in value was exactly $0.00, due to the fact that it was not operable. So, not only was the representative unable to help me, she lied as well. It’s all for the best, however. I will never buy another Tom Tom, and will encourage everyone else I know to follow suit.

I am not the only one with these issues:

When I connected gps to pc it didn’t download tomtom home, I had to install it from the website. Once installed I ran my free one time update of the map..it took a long time and failed in the end..the error details said that I need to log in. seems like the long time signed me out.. tried again and this time it updated my maps..the whole update thing takes 2-3 hrs with 6mps line.

Once on the road, the gps seems to perform very well and got me to all places accurately, the lane guidance is simply great, I love this feature. I wish I got 140 s with street names, but since the unit shows the next direction street name on top of screen, that was good enough for me. To be frank initially I thought not having the spoken street names was a big blunder but now I realize that displaying the next exit street name on top is good enough that speaking it out..

I heard a few rumors of tomtom 140 having rerouting problems..so far I have tried many unfamiliar directions and the gps very quickly rerouted me..so no this gps dosent suffer from slow rerouting.

So all in all I am very happy so far…that is after a week of use…

I ordered a replacement for my 140 which developed a flaky USB problem after six months. When it worked it was pretty nice. I used it traveling in various places around the country and found the IQ Routes to be handy.

I added the traffic radio receiver which worked well initially. Got good coverage around my home state and found the problem reports more useful than what my phone would give me via Google maps. After a few weeks the USB connection stopped working to the computer or the radio receiver. I thought it was because I dropped it once while traveling, but the charger worked fine through the USB port.

I opened the case and found what appeared to be a hard reset, which I operated (depressed). After this the USB connection worked again and so did the radio receiver. I reloaded everything using the TomTom software and things looked good – for a week after which it stopped connecting to the computer and the traffic radio receiver again. Don’t know if it is a hardware or software problem, so I’ll try a new unit as the cost is cheaper than the time I’d spend with a tech support call.

bought for 89 year old father-in-law for Christmas.. very sharp man, but directions are sometimes an issue… no worries about getting lost now!

Overall, I am very pleased with the Tomtom. I attend college in a very large city and the Tomtom smartly moves me around. I also like the touch screen and many settings you can change. My one gripe is that Tomtom has not updated their maps in rural areas that have implemented a 911 system to rename all the roads in the county. Instead, roads are still listed by their county road number and this makes it very difficult to navigate with any effect on gravel roads. For example, the name of the road listed on it’s sign may be Globe School Avenue, but on the Tomtom it shows up as BC 1701. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with my Tomtom and it’s many features.
