Good fun for the money
Bought thus TomTom on a whim – recently took it on an out of state trip and found it worked quite well to navigate through unfamiliar cities. Very easy to take with you or switch from one car to another – and easy enough for my granddaughter to program – don’t know about other types, but we’ve been pleased with our buy for the cost of this one.
satisfied customer
used it on our trip recently, added features of which lane to be in for upcoming freeway changes was excellent feature.
Great Navigator but Maps Wont Update as Promissed by TomTom
The navigator is great, much better than Garmin or other I have tried. I used it out of the box and it works really well. The only (and big) problem I found was during the first time I plugged it in my computer to use my free map update (valid for 30days after first log in). I downloaded and installed the TomTom Home software and then downloaded the updated maps. The software failed to install them and it keeps giving me an error message. First it said the download would not fit in the machine memory (How come?) then it just said there was an error. Guess what will happen? The 30-day free update will expire and I will have to pay for it then! That was a good way for TomTom to disappoint a new client, great product with poor support. I wrote them and am still waiting for a reply.
Love it!
Purchased the Tom Tom 140S and it has been a great mapping tool while traveling. My son has had a Tom Tom for 2 years and cannot do without it!
Helpful device
TomTom ONE 140-S is an easy-to-install device. It helped me well while travelling in NJ and NYC and on my way down south to Florida. Very seldom it indicated no satellite signal receivable, each time just for a few seconds. In general it worked precisely and has sufficient features for travelling in big cities and in rural areas as well.
very disappointed
This was my 2nd tomtom purchase and although I liked my 125, this model is terrble. I live on the beach and I can’t get a signal until I’m almost a mile inland. The system constantly was analyzing routes every time I turned a corner. But I was most frustrated with the fact the when I tried to enter an address the unit wouldn’t pull up anywhere close to where I needed to go and these are major roadways in an urban area. I think I’ll try a Garmin
GPS for Dummies
A cinch to use. No tech sensibility needed. A charm to have & use in new locations.
Purchase through Amazon
I cannot review the product, I bought the Tom Tom as a gift for my sister living this the US, the service I received was excellent and she received her Tom Tom just before her birthday, I am alway happy to use Amazon:)
excellent product
We purchased the Tom Tom for my daughter for her 19th birthday…a few weeks prior to her birthday she purchased her first vehicle and somehow manged to turn what should have been a 2 hour drive back to university into a 4 hour + trip!!! …..soooo we thought about just giving her some paper maps but then chose the TomTom ….she absolutely loves it! very easy to use and install. I would recommend this to any parent with a child that drives…….she is very impressed with the ease of use, there are is barely any need for her to take her eyes off the road with the turn by turn spoken directions. its perfect!TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Not too shabby
Before making my purchase I read over many reviews. I had decided to purchase when I saw it listed at a price I couldn’t pass up. Despite what several said, the first thing I did after receiving my GPS was to do the map update. I deleted several voices I’d never use, and updated. It did not take that long, and was successful.
This is my first GPS; however I had borrowed a friend’s Garmin several times in the past. When comparing them I really like the TomTom’s customization options. While the Garmin felt a bit more limited, I can make the TomTom more “me” with my own start up and shut down images as well as a huge selection of other downloadable content.
All in all the menus are sleek, the volume and clarity is great too. This thing has a very acceptable battery life. The first time I tried it in a “real” situation needing a GPS, I used it fully charged without the adapter and the battery lasted nearly 5 hours. It got me to my destination without any problems!
The only complaint I have came in a less populated area where the TomTom got me to the correct street, however it thought the house number I was going to was down from the actual location. I’m sure it’s just an anomaly.
All in all, I’m happy with my buy and if I could go back I’m sure I would purchase this again.
TomTom One 140-S
I have never had a GPS b-4 and have found it easy to use. Really like Dave’s voice. The only thing I wish for this product is more memory space. If I had not read past reviews I would not have known to remove the old map before I loaded the new one and the unit then would have locked up and been unusable. TomTom needs to increase the internal memory!!! I have to be looking at it b-4 I update anything.
update problems
Bought the TomTom 140S based on test results by Consumer Reports. It was highly rated. I used it for a week before I decided that I would keep it. After deciding to keep it I updated to the most current free map I was entitled to. Update failed so I called TomTom and they helped me resolve the problem. Then I joined the MapShare feature and updated the updates created by users who shared their corrections. After this update unit failed to get beyond the initial start-up screen to the navigation screen. I guess I could call TomTom again and probably solve the problem, but after several hours downloading, installing, reinstalling, and calling support I decided to return the unit. Clearly there are issues with the update and map sharing processes. That is too bad because I liked the unit when it worked.
The GPS is nice
This is a small and friendly GPS, however due to the small size the screen is not so clear and the resolution could be better.
Sweet Spot of value and features!
Let me start by saying I did exhaustive research prior to purchasing a GPS unit. I was convinced I was getting a Garmin 765,1370, or 1390 ( I also considered the Magellan 1470 and 4700). But they were all way more money than I wanted to spend- along comes this deal at less than half the price!~. I decided that features that were important to me were in order of importance:
Text to Speech – spoken street names
Lane Guidance –
Junction view
Blue tooth -
Lifetime free traffic
I live in a smaller metro area and so traffic was an easy perk to say good bye to, I only use my cell phone for emergency communication so bluetooth was an easy perk to say good bye to. That left me with 3 features that I knew at least 2 would be covered by the 140s. To my surprise on the test run of the unit I found that it has the equivalent of junction view not listed in the feature set (maybe that’s what they mean by “advanced lane guidance”).
Disadvantages-I’ve read dozens of reviews of this unit and the biggest disadvantage is the small internal storage size. But I’ve worked with computers that don’t have HUGE drives and it’s something you have to manage/work with. Updates require open space on the internal drive and if you download more than it will hold apparently it bricks the unit. So piece of advice – Back up the device then delete unwanted voices. To do this you’ll connect the TOMTOM to your pc and go to “manage my one”. Once that’s done you should have about 200 MB free space. Download and install updates. Then to update your map using the “latest map garuntee” you’ll want to do a calculation and make sure that you have enough space for the newest map. Go to ‘Tools’ drop down and click ‘use latest map garuntee’ and this will take you to the map update page. The update wizard will tell you the size of the new map available for download (you may have to click ‘more info’) DO NOT download and install yet. Click cancel or back and go back to manage my ONE. Verify in ‘manage my ONE’ that if you delete the map on your unit (same procedure as before) this will free up enough TOTAL space for the newest map. If so then delete your current map (about 1600MB the new map is about 1700MB)and proceed with the download and install of the new map. This whole process took about 5 hours so I just started it before I went to bed. Now that the unit is all up to date I think I’ll back it up again so I’ve got a fresh place to restore to.
Good . But TOMTOM Home Issues
I had a “720″ which was given to me as a gift. It worked great, but had many useless features, in my opinion, unrelated to navigation. I wanted a unit that had the voice directions like the “720″ , and this one has it with less frills;perfect. The problem I had was attempting to register the product and updating the unit at TOMTOM Home. The MAC I have has the latest OS, and there are issues when performing the updates. Constant error messages. I called customer service about three times. They would propose a solution, and I tried them, but they didn’t work. I was about to return the unit, when i decided to patiently go through the troubleshooting guidance on their website. I tried various suggestions, but they didn’t work. Then I modified a file relocation suggestion and it worked. So I kept the unit. I do a good deal of travel on my job which takes me to many of the major cities out east, and this and the 720 I had, are/were a salvation.Getting out of Logan AP and getting on the freeway you want, can be a real chore in heavy traffic, and the TOM TOM works perfectly. In New Jersey, on the Turnpike it’s advance directions gives you ample time to make the move when you need to merge on to another portion of the turnpike without much distance between the exit and the entrance. Finally, some folks complain the the menu/interface on the TOMTOM is be confusing. I think it’s detail enhances its use. If you make an effort to familiarize with how the interface works, there shouldn’t be an issue.
Good GPS for the price
I decided to get a GPS this week, and bought the 140-s. It took me awhile to figure out how to make the suction disk stick to the windshield until I realized that twisting the ring behind the disk is what makes it clamp to the windshield ( should have looked at the directions better )….
The unit is pretty intuitive to operate. I like the adjustable volume on the speech, since my hearing is not the greatest. At 100% it was really too loud. The maps, menus, and routing all seem to work well. I found that it was not necessary to detach the suction cup mount when taking the GPS unit out of the car, since it would easily snap out of the mount. I installed the software on my PC and it quickly updated all the necessary files. I had to go to another menu to make sure that I had the latest map, which I did not. It took about 2 1/2 hours to download on a DSL line, so this would be a problem with a dial-up connection. It then automatically installed the new map in the unit. I first deleted all the non-english voices on using the software tool, so that I would not have the problem of not enough memory that some people have had trying to install the updated map. I wish they would have a map of just the US as an update, since I never travel to either Canada or Mexico anymore, and that takes up alot of memory in the unit.
The display is pretty good, but a tad cramped for the touch keyboard which makes typing in information, error prone. I still like the size of the unit, so this is not a big deal for me. I like the idea of being able to make corrections on the map and to download the corrections that other people make from the website.
I debated on getting the map update service for $50+ a year, and decided to hold off on that since most of my driving is fairly close to where I live. If I start running into problem, I may sign up for it, but 2 years of updates would be the cost of a brand new unit. I think they would sell alot more updates if they would have the updates at possibly once or twice a year for less money.
I called their customer service line this morning with a question on the mounting, and the rep was very helpful and friendly, and answered my question promptly.
Excellent Features for the price!
I bought this one because it was the only GPS model containing coverage in Mexico. Granted it is not as detailed south of the border but very decent coverage of major highways all the way to Guadalajara!
TomTom ONE 140-S
Used the TomTom for the first time last week-end between Philly and Boston and it spent MOST of the trip trying to find a signal. It seemed very sensitive where I placed it on the dash or window and would lose the signal at the slightest change in placement.
Review of TomTom ONE 140-S
This item arrived on time and exactly as described. It works flawlessly and the screen is easy to read. No complaints.
Not too good
This was supposed to be my second TomTom. My first one was the Tomtom ONE, that I bought three years ago. As my first TomTom did not have the text to speech feature, I decided to update and got this one. Just like my older tomtom, the manual is awful. All the manual will tell you is how to buy more tomtom products. Another thing I have always disliked about TomTom is finding a TomTom Customer Service phone number is next to impossible. But what really bothered me about this Tomtom 140-S is the mount. It comes all in one piece, and I found it bulky and uncomfortable to manipulate. As I am used to not looking at the screen and listening to the instructions instead, I had got used to not using the mount at all. This cannot be done with this tomtom 140-S so I returned it for a refund the same day I received it. Amazon’s excellent return policy saved me from having to keep this thing. Just ordered a Garmin nuvi (with no mount attached) which I hope will fit the bill. Fingers crossed.
