Most reviews and product descriptions of portable navigation devices seem to center around the navigation features, the ease of use, the clarity of the display, or the accuracy of the directions. I’ve found all this to be quite OK on the TomTom One. After having used myTomTom One for over 3 years, the one thing that has bothered me most is the suction mount. It keeps falling off the windshield. Other navigators that I’ve seen, including other TomToms and Garmins have better designed suction cup designs with a little clip of wheel that pulls the center of the cup away from the windshield creating a stronger attachment. The one that comes with this TomTome One is flat and just doesn’t perform its most basic function very well.

I have used a Tomtom One for a couple of years.

Estimated times are always much longer than your actual time.

Map updating is expensive. Might as well buy a new unit (Garmin) when looking at the cost of map update.

Screen brightness is either daytime or a really bright night setting even when set to minimum.

Computer interface is pretty much useless except for being sold more software.

TomTom provides great usability, but my experience is that the maps are highly inaccurate. Unfortunately, purchasing updated maps is almost as expensive as buying a new unit!

The traffic updates require a bluetooth data connection and will not work with the iPhone (AT&T and Apple prevent using the iPhone as a bluetooth modem). With an older phone, such as a Motorola RAZR, you can receive data updates. But beware that you will be charged for data access from your wireless carrier.

Based on my experience with the TomTom map quality, I will be replacing this unit with a Garmin next time.

Not Sue Sue, Tom Tom! I purchased my Tom Tom One three years ago and I am very satisfied with the results. It is accurate and clear with the verbal direction cues. I am also happy with the way the system will auto adjust if I miss a turn or an exit. I have let friends and relatives borrow the system as well, and they have loved it! The only issue I have with it, is that I can’t figure out how to leave it on when I don’t have a necessary destination. I have seen other Tom Tom’s that have a “No Destination” or roaming type mode, but mine does not seem to have it. Other then that, I am very happy with my Tom Tom!

I dont know how other products stack up but ive found this one to want to drive off to no where too many times…

    Just wrong.

Most of the times it works fine. On few roads it goofs up with the house numbers here in Phoenix area. So we always enter nearest cross-section instead of with the exact house number and street.

Many times we have ended up way out of the city almost in a jungle.

The maps should be free for updates. 99$ is way too much!!

The Point-of-Interest feature is very poor. Can’t find names of many popular chain stores. I’ve seen that working much better in Garmins.

My next purchase won’t be TomTom for sure.

I selected this product based on the reviews of others. I have been using Tom Tom for a couple of years now. I find it very easy to use and most of the time it is very accurate. I was in the middle of nowhere and Tom Tom took me back to my hotel easily. One of the roads was not even named. Good product for the money. If I wanted to buy another GPS I would buy this brand again but the more expensive one with street name to voice function. My only complaint is that this model does not have the free map updates that come with the more expensive models and the maps you buy cost almost as much as a new unit.

Very good value navigation. It isn’t always perfect but it does a respectable job.

I HAVE FOUND THIS UNIT TO HAVE VERY AVERAGE BATTERY LIFE. WE AR UNABLE TO POWER THE UNIT UP AFTER ANY PERIOD. OTHER COLLEAGUES HAVE MAGELLANS AND SEEM VERY SATISFIED.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS UNIT AND WOULD SUGGEST ANOTHER MANUFACTURER.

CHECK OUT OTHER UNITS BEFORE YOU COMMIT CASH

This is a great product, was a gift for my husband now he always knows where he is going and never needs to stop for directions against his will again.

i bought this for my grandmother, who can’t find her way to her next door neighbor’s house. it works very well if you know the address; it’s easy to use, it reroutes if you miss a turn, etc. my one (big) gripe with this unit is the terrible point of interest database. major stores (lowes, home depot, bealls dept store, etc) were not in the database–while i might expect some local restaurants, etc, to be missing, you’d think big boxes would at least be in there. it’s possible to download some of them if you search for them individually on the tomtom database, but this is a real pain for me, never mind my 82 year old gm. it would be nice to d/l all of the poi’s at once, but this doesn’t seem possible. other than that it works very well though. i’m not sure if other brands have better databases. the object was for my grandmother to be able to plug in “walmart”, and have it direct her there. while it wouldn’t be a big deal for me to go to google maps and get an address, this is too big of an extra step for some people.

After one year of use. My tomtom one has a problem of charging. It is a problem of the device itself not the charger. I tried with new charger but not charing. I tried to solve the problem through customer support and experienced the worst custumer service. I will never buy tomtom again`.

If you want a good product stay away from Tom Tom products. I have used 3 different products from tom tom and maybe I’m a slow learner or tom tom has bad products, just stay away from tom tom so many better gps units to buy that are better. Not worth the money, bought a download and it turned out to be the wrong one and they will not fix the problem or give a refund. STAY AWAY FROM TOM TOM

A good unit for the money. If you want basic navigation with a few bells and whistles, this unit will do the job. I haven’t made a wrong turn yet.

I just purchased the TomTom One portable GPS system. I have a very good internal sense of direction and I can read a map just fine but in New Jersey traffic, who can be bothered with that? I hate getting lost on busy roads and I often take long road trips to other states. This is a great device because it will talk you through your route, when to turn, it shows the names of the roads, etc. Another feature I love for road trips is when you get tired and need to stop you can push a button and the TomTom will show landmarks of all the local hotels and gas stations along your route (like if you only want a Marriott hotel it will tell you where the nearest Marriott is and how to get there). It will also show you local attractions and places of interest if you choose. If you are stuck in traffic and want to get off the road you’re on you can hit “alternate route” and it will tell you where to go at your next turn off to get to your destination. I use it all the time, even at home. The funny thing is that we just built our home last year and because the development is so new it does not pick up on the GPS so when I turn down my road it just shows me driving into a dirt field! LOL. Other than that it is my most favorite new electronic device.

My 1st experience with gps took me to the Twin Cities to look at a used Jeep. I looked at the road atlas before I left my house in central Wisconsin and got an overall sense of which roads to take when I got into the Cities. I fully intended on bringing my atlas, but I forgot it. Oh well, I borrowed my dad’s Tom Tom One. I knew how to get to the Twin Cities without a map anyway, and the TomTom had the address programed into it.

TomTom got to the Twin cities flawlessly! I could have done that myself though. The problem was that the interchange for interstate/bypasses was being re-constructed in the city limits. The actual turn was opposite of what TomTom had in its maps. Things change, thats fine, it would not have been a problem had TomTom said “exit left I-490 North” instead of “exit left 500 yards” . It got me kind of lost, had I not looked at a map before leaving I would have been completely lost!! I ended up going with what I partially remembered from the atlas.

I have since tried other gps units (Magellan Crossover) and found it far superior because it tells you the proper name of the street you are turning onto. Oh and the Canada map on the Crossover is much more complete. The road to my dads cabin is on does not exist accorind to TomTom. It may be better than nothing… sometimes.

My dad has about the same opinion of the TomTom, in fact we borrowed it 4 months ago and he has not asked for it back! I purchased a Garmin gpsmaps 60csx after reading reviews here on Amazon.

I liked the Magellan Crossover too when I used it, it was a hard purchasing decision.

I Bought this for my niece’s graduation present. She is on her way this Fall to go to Law school and is not to familiar with Tenn.

She was thrilled with it, and learned to use it quickly. She told me several of her friends want one now.

this gps is on point. for every turn or intersection. i was amazed when the gps found local points of interest such as diners, schools, gas stations and etc. you dont expect a gps for this price to be as accurate as the 500 dollar ones. my only complaint is i could use a bigger one.

I live down South so here in SC the roads don’t change much and so the TomTom seems much more accurate to us hicks than you sissyfied city folk. Ok I’m only kidding but the TomTom seems very accurate to me. I only use it on long trips (100 or more miles) and if I have to go somewhere downtown and I’m not familiar where the place is. I’ve learned to pretty much trust the TomTom but it always seems to falter at the last couple of buildings. But, it does get you where you want to go. The TomTom loves the interstate so it always guides you there even if you know a shorter route from experience. I gave it four stars because it works well for what you pay. I’ve had mine about 6 months.

I cant imagine how I ever got along without my TOMTOM all these years, makes traveling fun and is easy to operate. The one draw back is that on this model you have to pay for map updates and that can run into some money.
