Good 50% of the time, frustrating the other 50%
This device is functional however not as user friendly as our previous Garmin nuvi (which was stolen from our car). The major issue is the maps. About half the time this device brings us to the incorrect location or to a dead end. It is also horrible at finding locations using the search features. We find it necessary to use it as a address to address navigator and alternatively use my Google phone to find locations.
Friends don’t let friends buy Tom Toms.
Tomtom XL
We got a Tomtom XL for Christmas. It was fine for a couple of months, and then we started having trouble with the “Easyport” windshield mount not sticking — and still have this problem. It might stick once out of a dozen tries, even though it worked OK for the first couple of months. The mount is also very awkward to use — it has a large stiff knob that has to be turned while holding the mount on the windshield. If you want to use a windshield mount, choose something other than a Tomtom Easyport. Also, in comparison to the Garmin Nuvi we had previously, the Tomtom is very difficult to program addresses, and is relatively unintuitive to operate in general. But the Garmin died when we tried to upgrade it (bricked it), so they have problems too. We’ll try some other brands and see if anyone has something out there that actually works well.
Review TomTom One Xl
The product arrived in a timely manner however I was anticipating suction for the window to be included but it was never mentioned on advertisement
new purchase onexl
The item was listed as new. The price I paid for it should have been new. When we contacted TomTom to do the update, they informed us the unit was a refurbished unit. . , , ,
IT HAS ITS OWN MIND
ALTHOUGH IT WORKS WELL IT TURNS IT SELF ON BY ITSELF, NOT ME. THIS IS WHAT DRAINS THE BATTERY. AFTER MANY RESETS AND FIXES WITH NO SUCCESS I WILL JUNK IT.I WOULD NOT SELL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE. BECAUSE IT WORKS WELL WHEN CHARGED I COULD NOT GIVE IT NO STARS. BOUGHT A GARMIN.
Tom Tom
this product lasted LESS than a year and we could not get it fixed!! Had to purchase an entirely new one!! Not happy about this one at all.
Very good GPS
Unlike the terrible Garmin units I’ve owned, this one boots up and locates satellites very quickly. It has the usual glitches here and there (i.e. odd routing to your destination), but the darn thing works. The biggest complaint I had with all my Garmins was excessive boot up time and taking several minutes to find satellites. The XL One has no such problems. Battery life is acceptable, and the software lets you customize it with your own pics for the opening and closing splash screens, which is kinda cool. Great unit for the price!
Almost perfect unit…
This unit is very nice. I thought since it stated that it had bluetooth capabilities that my wife would have been able to speak through it rather than an ear bug. I was wrong… Other than that, the unit is very nice!
don’t trust this device: instrument for mass suicides
Made for UK, not the US. Don’t expect it to know one-way streets, or correct roads. It is a good concept, but very innacurate and unsafe. If i wasn’t paying attention and listening entirely to planned routes from my tomtom, I would have turn down multiple oneway streets going the wrong way. This is an instrument for mass suicides!!
Fantastic GPS
I absolutely love the TomTom GPS and prefer their products to Garmin. I used the the rental car’s TomTom GPS and immediately loved the easy interface and the smooth transition from directions to menus, etc. Used several Garmin systems and none have some close to this system and now I know why the Europeans are fans of TomToms.
The US map is OK, but the UK map and POIs are bad
Bought the TomTom One XL for over a year and half. Used it for trips in Midwest and Northeast regions and it performed OK. At least it would take you to destinations, although it sometimes took us through residential areas instead of main roads etc. The good thing about it is the route-recalc speed, which is pretty fast.
However, it performed quite poorly during my recent trip to the UK. With an expensive purchase of UK map ($70), I hoped it would make my trip quite easy. Wrong expectation. The map apparent is quite old. It could not find my hotel because the hotel has changed its name a year ago. Also it could not provide accurate location of many POIs, as I found during my search for other hotels and shopping malls. I had a flat tire so I tried to locate a nearby garage/car repair shop, it could not find any. The restaurant listing is also pathetic, leaving out many nice national chains and nice local restaurants. I am now in search of a better GPS because of my UK experience with this model.
Urgh….
I have had nothing but issues. The updated map exceeded the internal memory card size so you have to buy a memory card (do not buy more than a 2GB card). There have been a slew of other issues since. In sum, I would spend a bit more money and buy something better!
TomTom one XL
TomTom is working great. It is easy to use, considering I am over 65,and easy to read.
I recommend it to any one who travels a lot.
Not what I ordered
I’m sorry but this is not what we ordered. We wanted a bluetooth Gps and it was worded that way but when this came it worked fine except for there was nothing to connect with my cell phone. The law in N.J. states no cell phonesm, and unless we use “handsfree”, we would be in danger of getting a ticket, if caught talking on a cell phone. We found out we would need to subscribe for the added luxury, which would cost a monthly fee, so we returned the item and look for some other GPS.
GPS….
Looked at many,
Best in my opinion for the price, has everything you need.
Refurbished was a mistake
The times I did use this were great, it took me on some unnamed Forest Service roads geocaching from one lake to another without me having a clue how to get there. Took me downstate to where my son was staying with no problem. We named her Lola and just enjoyed traveling with her the few times we used her. Saying that, we did only use this a few times before it simply died. I loved everything about this GPS but would not buy a refurbished one again. I thought they were supposed to be as good as new but after using it probably less than 10 times it just won’t turn on anymore.
Love it!!
Every trip we have taken the TomTom has gotten us there no problem! So glad we bought it!
Ok, but the maps are too often inaccurate.
I purchased this over a year ago because it was relatively cheap and a TomTom (probably the biggest name in GPS today). After a few times of usage, I found the One XL to be mediocre at best. Even with the updates downloaded online, I found the maps that were used would over/under shoot my destination by as much as a mile. In fairness, this is not ALL the time, but it is sadly about 50% of the time, which is extraordinarily horrible for a GPS unit that you often rely on blindly. I gave the One XL 3 stars because it gets me in the vicinity of where I want to go to the point where I can find my destination myself, otherwise I would’ve given this product 1 star.
Very poor battery! Poor support!
I’ve had my TomTom One XL for about 18 months. When turned off, the battery will drain within 2 days. Support says that this is normal as the battery must maintain settings. A really poor excuse. A PC internal battery will maintain settings for up to 10 years. On top of the battery draining, the unit will not operate on external power until the battery has a minimal charge and is reset. This means that you cannot use the unit for about an hour after putting on external power. Really great technology here.
On top of that, new maps came out about 6 months after I purchased the unit. Had I purchased the new maps, I would have paid full price. I was not offered a discount. I also submitted map corrections over a year ago and these have not appeared. Really great support here.
I cannot in good conscience recommend this product. There are too many other good products available.
TomTom, please return your product to Europe. It doesn’t fly here.
Great GPS at fair price
Pluses: The only GPS that is Mac compatible for updates and downloads. It’s hard to believe that so many devices are still only PC compatible when MAC has a real share of the personal computer market at this point.
Very nice graphics, fast processor, mostly intuitive interface, antenna picks up GPS easily, screen gives a lot of info, speaker sound is excellent, great machine at the price, love the fun voices you can download. Updating and downloading process is easy and quick.
Minuses: Some functions could be more intuitive – eg: I find putting in a new address to navigate to is not a direct and easy process compared with another GPS I borrowed; I’m not sure if the maps are as good as others for the US roads, but they’re OK.
Overall, highly recommended, especially for MAC users, an excellent value and a pleasure to look at.
