I am directionally challenged… So I definitely hopped on the opportunity to pick this up at Target for $86 as a substitution for a lesser known brand that went out of stock. The maps on this thing are not up to date and a lot of streets are not even on it.. Even my workplace which is a popular Casino.. They want you to pay extra to get new updated maps which is so stupid. I am getting better with knowing my way around so I don’t use this too much.. But it has come in handy. Love the speedometer on it cause mine is broken. Touchy, kinda complicates using it sometimes. Definitely not as accurate as Garmin.. Oh well. It’s worth the $86 I paid, maybe not the price on here.

    TOMTOM XL330

    NO SPOKEN STREET NAME.

    CAN NOT SEE IN SUN.

WILL TAKE YOU “AROUND THE WORLD” EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT GOING THERE.

FROM N.C. TO MARYLAND TAKES AN HOUR LONGER THAN A FOUR YEAR OLD GARMIN

    THAT HAS NEVER BEEN UPDATED.

WOULD HAVE TOSSED IT OUT THE WINDOW BUT COULD NOT AFFORD THE LITTER CHARGE.

    BUYER BEWARE!

I have owned two other GPS devices for my family. I bought this third to replace one that had broken after almost two years.

The suction cup attachment would not attach to the windshield. It would only affix to a flat glass surface, such as a side window, causing me to have to use the adhesive product on my dash to secure the GPS. It seemed OK in my wife’s car which was in the garage. I summarily threw the box away.

However, about a week later I took her car to the store in daylight. The screen is not viewable in daylight. Despite changing the map color and the brightness for the display, when in sunlight, we could not view the display. It is visible when the car is garaged or at night. During daylight it is absolutely useless.

I contacted Vanns (from whom the order was placed) and they told me that because I did not have the original package, I could not return the GPS.

I will NEVER EVER purchase from Amazon or any other on-line store dealer again. If I had bought this at a regular store, the packaging would have been immaterial.

This GPS is a piece of garbage. It cannot be viewed when outside during the day.

This is my 3rd Tom Tom, I am happy with all of them since its easy to use, and simple. This one in particular is better in a lot of aspects, here are some.

    PROs:

    1. Larger display make it very useful

    2. Spoken Street names are very useful. So it will say “Take 95 North towards Baltimore” rather than “Take the next right”

    CONs:

    1. Slow to respond. This is one of the biggest disadvantage I think.

    2. “Clear Route” option is moved somewhere else, not easy to find.

In summary, it provides you a familiar Tom-Tom environment, with large display but slow response.

This was my second TomTom 330. I love my 1st one and it stills works great. But I did have a lot of trouble updating the map when I first got it. The solution was that you have to delete the old map before it would allow the new one to load as there is not enough memory. There is no directions for this or messages as to that being the problem. You’d think it would handle this automatically.

So I anticipated this with my new one. But I had unusual communication problems from the beginning. When I tried to upload the new map the transfer would freeze. I tried for 4 hours to make it work. My final try was to reformat the memory on the TomTom but even that would not complete correctly effectively killing the TomTom. She’s going back.

I had the XL330 for 18 months. I went to update the data on the device and was advised to download new maps which were selected by TomTom with device connected. I Paid $69.95 for maps and tried to install them. The device malfunctioned, TomTom said that the device was bad. TomTom will not refund the map prices because of the waiver you sign to download the maps. If you download the maps you own them even if you have no device to use them. This is an overall TomTom rule and they are unwavering. Buyers beware.TomTom XL 330 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

I gave a Tom Tom to by step-son for Christmas. He is a journeyman cement finisher and is scheduled in many places that are not always on the map. As long as there is an address, he can get there on time. Money very well spent and with the upgrades available, he can use it for a long time. Great product at a great price.

This is our second TomTom XL 330. Had one and loved it so much, bought this as a gift for college-age son. If he loves it, you know it’s good. And he does. Used it out of the box for 1000-mile trip and never looked back. Simple to use, easy to view, hard to leave home without.

Updates itself when you plug it in. Easy to program, easy to see and understand in route. Highly recommended.

I bought a TomTom XL just over a year ago, and the unit stopped working. The company cannot repair it, so it is basically a piece of trash. Not only do I have to trash an expensive piece of electronics, but dealing with TomTom has been infuriating.

TomTom service: TomTom will not repair broken GPS units, so if you are out of warranty, you are out of luck. They don’t even have an authorized repair center. Nothing. I have an extended warranty through my VISA credit card, but cannot get the unit repaired anyway. Very frustrating.

TomTom “customer service”: They want everything done online, which is what I did. However, they don’t have good answers, and sometimes they don’t answer at all. When they don’t have a good answer, they will just let the question sit, and after 3 days the system calls the case “solved”, which is pathetic. I tried calling their number. After a 26 minute hold, a guy called “John” asks me for my first and last name, and some other info. When I asked him for his last name, since John seemed pretty generic, he said goodbye and hung up on me. The worst customer service.

After all this hassle, I don’t even care whether TomTom GPS units are good or not. I am buying a Garmin. I checked the forums and Garmin’s website, and Garmin does offer repair of their GPS units at a reasonable cost.

Love this unit! it works fabulous, and when testing the unit, I took a drive to a friends house, and intentionally missed a turn to see what it would do, before I had gone 2 car length beyond the turn it had already recalculated the route!

Over all this is the best GPS I’ve owned, granted I’ve only owned this and a hand held Garmin for hiking.

The speaker is plenty loud when driving, I turned it up to 85% to compensate for my window being down and heard everything fine.

I did notice the address was off, but the way I see it, is You should have a rough idea of where you are going to begin with.

EDIT: People NEED to remember to report errors with any GPS, that way TomTom can fix it!

Open the box plug it in and go, how easy and how convenient, had a garmin after 4 hours download and the no satellite reception sent it back. Have a garmin or the golf course and it is great. This tom tom is the product for me as I was able to download for free all the state parks in fl and get immediate directions to all. Great voice and speaks the name of all roads, An A-1 product that you would pay 70-80 dollars more at gamin for a lesser product.

The battery is not good at all, I drain all the way and recharge and turn it off and the next time I turn it on the battery is dead.

The user interface is convoluted and fairly painful, especially if driving.

My biggest complaint is it gets you close to the target but on numerous occasions close was a block away or on the backside of a building and other times it just was not even close.

I much prefer my old old Mio, it still gets me there faster.

So very disappointed in this thing.

On the positive side you can load goofy voices and car icons and customize it and it is relatively cheap, but just does not make up for the rest and you can do better for the $$$.

I bought this when I moved to a new state this year and figured it would be helpful. I was wrong… my wife’s three year old garmin with a three year old map has a more updated map than the one tom tom put in as an update when I set this unit up on May 3rd 2009 when I purchased it. This thing is a hunk of junk, the points of interest files are missing tons of locations my wife’s three year old unit has. The one reason I purchased this was because it speaks the street names… although it will tell you right turn ahead as if it is just ahead, when you are still two miles away. Save your money and buy something that uses maps supplied by google. Tom Tom uses Teleatlas, and they have a poor record of fixing their errors… they are in way over their head. Now the errors you may think are minor… wrong, we are talking streets that don’t connect so you have to turn back, gps road coordinates that put you on the wrong road. I have reported weekly the same issues and they never get fixed, so don’t bother with their map update service it is junk too… why buy a new map for a new version number… since they don’t care to fix real errors!!!! This was a very bad purchase, I screwed up, and won’t make another one on a tom tom unit for sure!!!

This unit came loaded with the most updated maps of any I have had before and it is quick to respond to changes. Satellite coverage is also very good.

This is my second Tom Tom and this time I got the newest version. My first one was the XL-One and I bought a refurbished one and it died just after the warranty ran out. Up to that point I absolutely loved everything about it. It was very, very easy to use (I’m only medium techy) and it took me on unnamed forest service roads great when I went geocaching. I love the latitude and longitude features so I could plug my actual coordinates in to help find the best roads.

I’ve really only tried this one once geocaching and it wasn’t as good on the back roads as the XL-One. I do need to give it another chance and will but was somewhat disappointed with the first attempt at using this. Several times it took me to the absolute wrong places when the right road would have been just a little further on.

One feature that doesn’t compare to the XL-One is the attachment feature to the window. There really isn’t a suction cup, just a flat disk, and it doesn’t stick very well. Also, it is much harder to detach from the window if you want to leave the suction cup there. On the XL-One you could just lift it off but with this one you need both hands and it’s hard to pry off and put back together and the suction cup will usually come off anyway.

This is a very minor complaint but if I had to do it over again I would buy an XL-One (not refurbished) and stay away from this one.

My Garmin nuvi was accidently destroyed and a friend recommended I try the TomTom…I ordered the XL 330 from Amazon…I plugged the unit in and it seemed to working perfectly…the next day, I turned it on and tried to navigate and it froze and restarted over and over…I reset the device as instructed by the operators manual and the device still malfunctioned…I contacted customer service (which was not super helpful) and was told to down load TomTom home in order to reinstall the software…I did this as instructed and the device still continued to malfunction…while all of this was going on I received another shipment from Amazon with another model TomTom, One-S (it appears I double ordered…my fault not Amazon’s)…I thought, hey good to go I will send the XL 330 back and keep the TomTom One-S…I plugged it in and still the exact thing, product freezes when I try to navigate and then continuously loops in a shutdown/restart mode. The point being that I had two separate models of the TomTom and both malfunctioned in the exact same way…this tells me that TomTom has an inferior product and/or their quality control is not good…save yourself the hassle and get a Garmin…that is what I have done now and should have done from the start…The Garmin is reliable and easy to use.

I have multiple TomTom GPS units. I was VERY disappointed in this one. From the minute it came out of the package I had issue powering the unit on. After weeks of dealing with it, I broke down and took the unit apart. I found some very interesting things. The power switch, is a CHEAP combination of a little plastic lever, pivoting…then pressing down on the actual power switch on the main board of the unit. HORRIBLY poor design. The whole deal, rests on a small little plastic piece of about 1/4″. If it doesnt work perfectly…it won’t power on. It took some modifications. The unit powers on now. But still occasionally has issues. I have purchased 2 other TomTom ONE-XL ’s I am much more impressed with them.

I bought this GPS because I wanted one that spoke street names but wasn’t too expensive. I read up on this model, and the reviews I real all said it spoke the street names. But it turns out this one actually doesn’t, which was annoying. Also, so far it’s told me to make a few illegal turns. Fortunately, it rerouted me pretty quickly after I passed them, but I wish TomTom would have a better idea what the traffic laws were.

But overall, for $130 it’s not a bad product.
