   After being disappointed by a national chain’s deal on the TomTom GPS, I found exactly what I wanted and at a lower price from Amazon.

2. BEWARE! JUNK! BUY A GARMIN!

   I purchased a refurbished one and regretted it quickly! When I tried to use my free 30 day map update it told me it was expired (the day after it was delivered to my home). After clearing that up with TomTom, I found out that my GPS was actually broken and unable to download the current map. The system memory kept coming up short. I spent around 4-6 hours divided between numerous occasions speaking to different TomTom customer service people trying to figure out the problem and even reformatted it. I even had an extremely rude TomTom customer service representative named Heather mouth off to me and actually hang up on me. This has been a terrible experience! Good luck if you go this route! Trust me, you don’t want this low quality junk nor the rude service experience!

3. Best Tom Tom I ever had!

   Oh, yes, definitely the best portable car navigation system I have had. Love it. Why? Well I upgraded from I believe a 3rd generation Tom Tom 130 or something close to that and I knew I really would like and appreciate the two features that were missing on that one. Lane guidance and spoken words for approaching streets where I had to turn in to.

   Now that I have it for a month or more I know the active lane guidance is a savior. Especially in the Dallas area with spaghetti highways with dozens of off and on ramps. Without that I would for sure have driven on some wrong ones. I know I did using my old TomTom.

   The voice commands calling out the turning streets I don’t really need. It’s nice and easy in cities, but not where I use it.

   Definitely better than the competition.

   Very satisfied with product. I was a little leary with it being refurbished but you would never know it if they did not tell you on the product description. I am enjoying it and it definitely comes in handy. Would recommend to anyone that is looking for a dependable GPS..

5. Great purchase but disappointed.

   Was guaranteed a map update within the 30 days of purchase.
   
   Tried to update but was refused. They say my 30 days expired. I tried the
   
   update after only 2 weeks. I’m miffed about that. Otherwise, the device
   
   works great so far and my wife actually loves it and is in love with
   
   David, the computer voice. Who knew?

6. Good GPS…

   Good GPS. I bought this GPS refurbished and the quality looks like brand new. There were no surface scratches and came with all the packaging materials as if brand new. Rigth out of the box, the device was easy to use, and when I first attached the GPS to my windsheild it felt very sturdy. Use of the device was simple and very self explanatory. It picked up a satellite signal quickly and did an adequate job of giving directions. I wish it had a search function, but in this particular price class that is just not available. I usually have to find a place on my iPhone, then plug in the address. I’ve attached it to my computer and found this part of the GPS also easy to use. It updated all the maps and software in a step by step process. All in all this is a good GPS for the money, though sometimes I wish it had more of the bells and whistles. I’d recommend this device to friends.

7. Happy Driving with Tom Tom

   This device is the best GPS that I have ever own. I come from a legacy of Garmain and when it failed on me day, I decided to invest in other brands of GPS’s. I heard reviews about a special brand called Tom Tom. I have heard of it before but was not interested at that time. So I read all the reviews and went on to Amazon, saw the one I liked and purchased it. It arrived rather quickly with the standard shipping and when I navigated my first trip around the block. I new that I had the state of the art GPS. And the maps are way cheaper then other brands that I reviewed as well. I am very happy with my purchase!

8. GPS confused. Cannot install software on Vista or XP pro,

   I purchased this Tom Tom gps after a very good experience with my earlier model. However this one is evidently still in need of refurb. It gets confused when trying to input addresses and sometimes will just come back and say it is having trouble with satellite signal and perhaps I am in a building. I am not in a building, around trees or under a cloud.
   
   I have been unable to connect to any computer either my HP Vista or My laptop Win XP Pro. Unable to install software for this item. I can browse the device and see the software but it will not install. Windows reports a problem with this usb device when attempting to connect.
   
   Be careful. Sometimes the problem with the gps may not be fixed by the refurb.

   It does work when you can input address but cannot update.

   This is the first item purchased on Amazon which has given any trouble.

9. TomTom XL 340-S

   I have owned many GPS units over the years and have built-in navigation in my Ford Truck. I love Garmin for their marine applications (chart plotter type units). However my wife has the Garmin Nuvi and we dont like that unit at all. A few years back I bought a TomTom 300 and have it mounted on my HarleyDavidson and it works like a champ. Many hours of vibration & exposure with no issues other than it rebooted once or twice when i hit a large bump in the road.
   
   So I recently purchased this new TomTom XL 340-S as I wanted to have a unit to use in my work truck rather than borrowing my wife’s Nuvi all the time. I bought the 340-S as a factory refurbished unit, and I was 100% satisfied. It came in original boxes, with screen protector in perfect condition. The price was very good as [...] is hard to beat! The unit works well as it is fast to acquire sats, routing does a good job 90% of the time and takes you the way you would normally drive if you were familar with an area. (routes that are practical and makes sense)

   The only things that I am not thrilled about this unit are;
   
   #1. The mini-usb connection on the unit is a total pain in the @ss to get the cord in or out of. I sometimes use the charger to juice up my Blackberry while on the road. The cord goes into my blackberry easy, so the issue is with the opening on the TomTom.

   #2. The mounting system is OK, but not the best. I don’t like how they have the round circle thingy in the back with the springs. It has not fallen out yet… but I can’t say that I trust that this will never happen.

   Things that i LIKE about this unit;
   
   #1. Price- really reasonable for a package like this.

   #2. Advanced Lane guidance is terriffic! I have to drive in Philadelphia and New Jersey areas a lot, and this comes in really handy for those highway 3 way splits where you are not exactly sure which way to go.

   #3. I like the USB plug, so you can charge other things.

   #4. Very easy to use.

   A guy who works for me bought the same model, and he is very happy with his as well.

10. Works Well

    I have been using the TomTom XL 340-S for about a month now. I have already taken it on a couple of trips. I like the lane guidance feature, how it mounts to the windshield and the fast route recalculation. The graphics is good and the sound is loud. I was not able to download the maps update. The customer service person said that they are working on a new version and that I should try in another month. I will be taking it to Mexico in a week. Mexico maps was the main reason I bought this unit.

11. BAD SERVICE but good device

    I was so happy when I got my TomTom everything works great. I just HATE dealing with there service center. I have now called three(3) times and everytime I have to wait at least 15 minutes. When you get the refurb. you do NOT just simply get the free map update but you have to call them at least two(2) time for them to activate it. After about an hour on the phone and another two(2) hour massing with it I got the update. Next my internet cuts out on me because the download is 1.7 Gigabytes and will take something like two hours to get it. If the connection cuts out then you have to call back, wait, mess around on your computer, delete items off of your devise and then find a good solid two(2) hours for the download. Also your GPS will not work until you get the up if it screws up during the download. I believe TomTom is better than Garmin, but to bad both of there support centers are the WORST. I took my garmin back to the store because I had the same problem getting the update. Garmin told me they would put the update on my account but then three(3) phone calls, three(3) E-mails and three(3) weeks later, NOTHING. Just wanted to let you know how your going to sent the next month of your life. By the way garmin support is worse and you will NOT get anywhere with them. At least TomTom does something useful. Enjoy your new GPS!!!

12. Great – First time User of GPS and I found it easy to use

    I had researched the top names of GPS units by reviewing features, ease of use and reviews by others who have purchased this product. I purchased a refurbished unit and paid $80 which is amazing considering all of the features for this TomTom. The reason I bought the refurbished oneis based on the reviews from others who had purchased this same model. It seems there can be a problem with this unit if you do not delete the other languages that you will not use prior to updating the most recent maps, which you can do for free when you purchase this. Knowing this and being a program analyst, I knew those who did not follow the instructions caused the program when downloading the most recent updates,to run out of memory and making the unit useless as the factory would have to reload the program. So i practically stole this great unit. It works wonderfully and based on performance of other Garmins that friends have, this is a much better GPS. I plan on buying a second one for my wife as she has seen how easy it is to use and now wants this same one.

13. Just what I wanted!

    Had a Garmin Nuvi 660 that died and wanted a simple less expensive replacement. Just a basic easy to use, minimum frills…

    Didn’t even recall this was a refurb til looking up the listing.

    Delivered as promised. Easy to setup item and online site. Got me to and from my destination. Even managed to get a detour around a heavy traffic ahead warning notice.

    I’m happy.

14. disappointed- – - to Happy

    I feel like I throwed away $100.00 this XL 340 S Tom Tom can not get me home 6 blocks away,from my front door,next its my understanding it calls street names, well it hasn’t happened yet,I have a friend that has a Gramin and it never misses a turn,I mean its on top of things,this thing couldn’t even get me home,in 6 blocks,I will just put it in the box and lose on this, and I’m happy for those of you that has got one that does as it should and I’m sure there are good ones out there,but mine is a reject,God bless,if some of you have a suggestion please share them Thanks,I want to say the People at TomTom are on top of things,today they spent around 5 hours helping me to get my XL-340-S fixed,they are as fine as their word,I’m so happy with this GPS now,I could not belive the length TomTom went to,to help me, and now its all I had expected and more.to anyone that reads all the things this gps is suppose to do,well mine now does it’s all just like Amazon.com says,and if I needed to I would buy another one just like this one,Thank you Amazon.com and TomTom. 15. Navigator

    Haven’t used it yet but setting it up and checking it out was very simple and it seems ok,people have told me Tom Tom’s are famous for freezing up. I guess we will see

16. EASY,ACCURATE,PERFECT

    This is our first GPS and we loved it. We have borrowed and used a Garmin,but this TOM TOM blows it out of the water!. We started using it around town for small trips to get used to it and found it was very accurate. The big test was taking in to S.C. and it was “awesome baby”. We particularly liked the ” two mile” warning and what lane to get into after you make a turn. It really was handy when we were in S.C. and we wanted to visit different sites and restaurants. Again it was “perfect” we couldn’t be happier.

17. My first GPS — works great

    The device is great. This is my first GPS, and on first use it got us to an unfamiliar destination, finding restaurants in the area.

    Anchor system is intuitive and works fine.

    The AC charger that came with the device (refurbished) did not fit properly into the GPS. Thus after attempting to charge it from a home outlet, I came back to a totally uncharged GPS.

    Fortunately, the car charger does work, and I separately bought the USB charger which works fine.

18. Does the job at the right price.

    I had an earlier TOMTOM that looked like a cross between an IPHONE and a pod creature. Never liked the massive thing. Eventually the substandard design for the mount fatigued and the unit failed to charge, rebooted at inconvenient times, or just went DEAD.

    TOMTOM has made significant progress with their new slimline design series – and the universal mount is nothing short of great! I have a Chevy with a deep pocket in the front of the console by the shift level – complete with a 12V plug in. The XL 340 fits perfectly in this spot – people wonder how I had it “built-in”. The truth is I mounted the plastic adapter disk to an old 3″ floppy disk, and attached the TOMTOM to it. The larger base gives it added stability without taking up space, plus it’s instantly dis-manteled if need be.

    While this was a refurbished unit, the appearance and performance is LIKE NEW – at substantial savings from Amazon.Com

    Good buy.

19. Tom Tom

    Not sure this thing knows the shortest route. May be user error, but difficult to enter a location like “Kroger”. I thought I was buying new, but when received the update download feature had expired.

20. dissapointing interface

    The good:
    
    - Faster lock onto the satellites than Garmin
    
    - Better routing than Garmin
    
    - Can exclude sections of a route (like backed-up freeways, etc) – missing with Garmin.

    The bad:
    
    - Cannot search restaurants by cuisine (needed to find fast food near me, had to run separate searches for the names of all chains I could think of).
    
    - POI does not show address in info
    
    - Does not say destination on left or right
    
    - Very slow route calculation
